Carp fishing hooks come in many different shapes, sizes and patterns for many different carp fishing situations but it can be confusing which carp hook to choose for which carp fishing rig. In this video I explain the different carp hook patterns and their differences and what rigs and angling situations they suit to help catch you more carp. If you are a beginner to carp fishing or even a seasoned pro angler this video will help you decide which carp hook to use for any fishing situation.

Nice video Simon. I’m just getting my gear together slowly for my first time carping. Your videos are very helpful and clear. Lots to learn

Great video, very informative. First hook video I have seen after months of watching carp videos - thanks. Chod and curve shanks for me

Great vid Simon, wide gape and curve shank for me, 100% barbless and have been for 25 years. Like you love the withy pool rig but often shorten the shrink tube a little which I believe works better. I will use a chod for a d rig if the bottom is rock hard and clean but not on my current lake. Tight lines 🎣👌
@SimonDewCarpFishing

I sometimes shorten the shrink tube too if I think the fish are super wary and likely to spook off a high pop up 👌

Great stuff Simon Only allowed barbless straight round bend hooks where I fish so it’s a wide gape or chod hook for everything After this tuition I might have to keep the chords to d rig mono or floro & wide gape for softer hook length

D rig with mono and a chod hook is a killer presentation mate 😉

Only just subscribed to your channel and love the content. Easy to watch and listen to, along with breaking every piece of information down and explain when and why you use a piece of tackle or certain technique. The videography is fantastic, what cameras do you use? Keep up the good work 👍

Love the vids Simon, I agree with the Chod hooks, very versatile.. I mainly use the semi stiff slip d from one of your previous videos for snowman rigs or the stiff hinge for pop ups. Great channel please keep it up
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 3 месяца назад
Have you tried a withy pool rig for pop ups? It's so much easier to tie and works just the same as a hinge 😉

Long shank hooks are by far the best just look at the underwater dvds especially number 1 !!!
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 2 месяца назад
Longshanks are great for hooking fish as stated in the video but unfortunately they can lead to more hookpulls and mouth damage which is why fewer people use them these days. The same effect can be achieved with shrink tube but without the negative effects 👍

I cannot remember the last time i lost a fish on a long shank. Compared to other hooks id say long shank is 100 times better.

Do you find the point goes over a little easy on these hooks?
@cmdrcoyote7598
@cmdrcoyote7598 8 месяцев назад
For me anything other than a long shank. Had way to many hook pulls with long shanks and that's for all species. My fav used to be (I think it was a fox pattern) short shank wide gape which really had a wide gape and the point almost level with the eye but always used with a slightly long shrink tube with the line fed through with a needle so not existing the end of the tube if that makes any sense. Not had many problems with the ronnie rig and been using it on and off since around 2000 but mines more than a bit different than the latest fad version ;)
@SimonDewCarpFishing

Glad you share my experience with long shanks a few people don't agree but I definitely think they lead to more hook pulls. I'll check out the hooks you mentioned 👌

Personally never had an issue with long shanks and hook pulls, even snag fishing.
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 8 месяцев назад
That's interesting mate I've heard many fisheries ban them due to mouth damage etc but each to their own. If it works for you stick with it 👌
@pulchaimago4u

@@SimonDewCarpFishing Many factors could lead the situation you lay out for long shanks. For the use of a very stiff rod would be a greater contributing factor to hook pulls and damaged mouths, of course if I encounter this situation I would revise my approach.

Drennan continentals. That's it. I use a mono for bottom baits and tne multi rig for wafters/pop ups so a continental is all i need.

I settled on these after a lot of experimenting and wasted money Muggas - curve - blowback Esp slammer - extended to be a long shank and line aligned - again blowback Angling iron - chod hooks for everything else
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 8 месяцев назад
I've not tried the slammer but it looks very similar to the angling iron anchor hook which are spot on 👌
@Kb11466
@Kb11466 8 месяцев назад
@@SimonDewCarpFishing Yeh angling iron sent me a sample of all their hooks and while I liked the anchor, the eye angle makes it hard to do a decent shank extension without closing the gape up. Hence the slammer, which is barely angled at all

Why dont you like Ronnies?
@SimonDewCarpFishing
@SimonDewCarpFishing 8 месяцев назад
Too many hook pulls and mouth damage with them mate. There's better rigs out there and I'd rather do something different to the majority of people 👍
@Jerec
@Jerec 8 месяцев назад
@@SimonDewCarpFishing Ah fair enough. I'm trying to setup some Chods, but dont feel confident using them, as in once they are out there, using slightly slack line and dealing with a take, but I guess you have to try these things and if they work great, if not, then you move on to something else. Keep up the vids mate, new sub here.

Most of my fishing on the bottom with a bait out of the bag or wafter for these I go with a wide gape straight or beaked if there's a lot of debris on the bottom I only use curve shanks for my popups
