lol I was gonna say, everything here is first month stuff for anyone who cares about their job, but the pencil pull is sort of a good idea. But if you = only = have one pencil and it's a pencil pull, the first time someone actually needs a pencil they're gonna call you a *** :) If I have less than 3 in the pouch and less than one in the pocket I feel like a dummy

If I ever heard a foreman or anyone refuse to give someone water I would fire them on the spot. A company in my area got a $35k fine from OSHA for doing something similar and rightly so. That's a safety issue. If I see a guy using a table saw wrong, I don't let him cut his fingers off to teach him a lesson.

I’ve used pencil pullers, my experience with them, they tend to fall out or the rubber grip will tear. I like the idea so much that I stead buy badge pullers that have the key rings. Drill a hole into pencil and now I have even better retractable pencil holder.

When sharpening a carpenter's pencil, try cutting the narrow ends first! This narrows the sides, so that when you cut the wide end, you're less likely to break the carbon. (2:23)

I got a dewalt razorknife and it has a cool thing where when there is no blade in it and you extend, retract, and extend, it reloads the next newest blade in the tank. So if my blade is covered in gunk I either spin it around, or if its no good, retract and get a new one in a second, brand new blade for sharpening pencils like needles. When you get a tar covered blade on a retract, time to reload the knife.

Good video Vince! Reminds me of getting and training new jet engine mechanics in the USAF. I’d hand them a mechanical pencil, a black pen, a red pen and a little green notebook. Then I’d brief them that they weren’t ready to work for the day if they didn’t have those tools (because that is what they were, tools to get the documentation squared away), and that was the only set I would issue to them. If they reported for duty and didn’t have them, we were going to have a little “chit chat” on the side about failing to follow orders.

I exclusively use the simple BIC mechanical pencils. Really easily to “sharpen” one handed and get a sharp point. Stays behind your ear, has a little clip in case you have safety glasses on... I love em Edit: Forgot, also won’t roll! Not great for framers or rough carpentry, but I’ve used them for both. I’m primarily a finish carpenter so for that they’ve been the best option for me

Commercial/Industrial Electrician here... I don't use Carpenter's pencils, I choice is 'My First Pencil' made for little kids just learning to use one. It's three times fatter than a Ticonderoga #2 so it doesn't ever get broken if it gets dumped in my tool bag and it's easy to sharpen because each one comes with a sharpener for it's fatter size. Because I often do exposed pipe work I prefer the #2 because any marks I make are easily taken off. Been using them for years and even hand them out to my crew with the admonishment that Sharpie marks are for marking cuts and pencil marks are for bends. I've tried the retractable pencil doohickey but having a pencil swinging around will get caught in T-grid and other things in some of the spaces where I have to work. Because I wear a hard hat I use a snap-in 'MC' strap for steel studs that I can clip to the brim and keep my pencil there. I also use another clip for my sharpie and for my terminator screwdriver (The tiny one) for when I do control work on machinery. The clips can be used so you can have a pencil just under the brim edge and a sharpie just over the top of the edge on the same side of your hard hat. I also use a Glazier's pouch in my belt... it's a small pouch they use for their glass cutting tools with three small sections for my punch, pen and another terminator or Sharpie (Sharpies take some breaking in to fit but it's worth it in my book)

@@VCGConstruction I don't record a lot of the small ones. I have a bunch I did on my other channel I issue for my students. It's not as cool as yours though in terms of quick editing, voice inflection and pacing. I really love how you modulate your voice, it's fantastic. It punches ideas/points with energy and then brings the conversation back down to "just me and you taking here". Very well done, you should consider teaching. My stuff i record is a little dry (by design, gotta be a professor and all that). My ones i don't record are less precessional (no evidence lol) . However I probably should record the one on carrying the notepad and pen. Side note: I think will use your videos as an example of how to get people to listen when you present things. I do a bunch of talks on that as well. I use to use Billy Mays from oxyclean (entertaining = holds your attention), i still do sometimes but it's a shame he passed. Funny thing with the pen and notepad: I will sometimes even challenge them when they screw up. If they can look though their notes and prove me wrong ("You said this on Wednesday at 4pm...") I will back down and even apologize. It's a great lesson and I welcome being proven wrong. I'm like you, if a student is broke but trying trying hard I will occasionally buy a pocket notebook and pen for them as a gift. Ok I'm rambling lol. I'll check my videos and see if there is something interesting for outside the classroom. If there is I will point you to it. :)

Great video. The pencil on a retractor is the best idea. I know shop aprons have a pencil pocket but (as a hobbyist) I tend to put my pencil down on a work surface and walk away. I don't have the retractor so as an experiment I drilled a hole through the pencil near the eraser. I ran a string loop through the hole and I wear it like a necklace. I haven't trained my brain yet that it is on the loop so I'm still looking for a pencil but after a few seconds my brain reminds me it's around my neck. Then I say "duh". It's the greatest thing. Since it hangs low, unlike the retractable, I slip it in a pocket. Thanks. I tried the carpenters pencil from Lowes, but I found the lead did not tolerate the sharpener. It fractured easily. Maybe a bad batch. So I use a No 2 good quality standard type.

Two pencils that I use on the job; Every day the large primary pencil that all school children used to learn to wright. The real one for kids. They have a soft, large and tough lead that will hold a sharp point and not dent soft materials. They also work well when you have gloves on. The second one is blue ink pencil. It looks like a #2 pencil except the lead is hard blue ink. They mark damp or wet material. They are the very best for making precise layout marks on wet cement in the rain.

I use carpenters pencil for roughf framing only....and #2pencil for finish only. Also i sharpen all of them on my bench grinder 5 or 6 at a time and have sharp ones all day for couple days then repeat. Dont lose near as much material by chunking huge shavings with a knife, half the time breaking the lead just to have to remove more. Precise, easy to control, and can get whatever point i want. I do #2s round and keep the carpenters pencils flat so the lead last a lot longer.

Oh my God Vince I loved the pencil video that was awesome brother. It brought back so many memories back in the day. I started wearing a tool vest because it was the most comfortable fastest method of storing my pencil there right at the top of your vest and you always had multiple pencils and yes I was always giving them away but always had enough just in case LOL

@@VCGConstruction No I do not have a Atlas but I do like them.Mine is a little lighter version and it's called Bjornklader. I have been using them for around 10 years they are awesome and only around $100 compared to the atlas in price

That's right. In my younger years, I went through that same type of lesson learning. I did too, at some point showed up without water to a jobsite.. on a dang hot summer day in Texas, Lesson learned! I will probably stop by HomeDepot next week. Closest one here is about 70 miles. I have a few tools to pick up, including that pencil, and a Milwaukee Fan, maybe two.. How good does an HD12.0 battery fits on it?

That pencil pull is a good idea. I stick mine in the band of my hard hat in front of my ear. Gonna have to get me a pencil pull though cause I still have the habit of forgetting to put it back in my hard hat.

Vince there's a new pencil sharpener at Home Depot that sharpens carpenter pencils by using your drill/driver and a screw driver bit. You push your bit into one end and insert the pencil in the other end and start the drill. Makes a nice sharp pencil. If you can find them $2.99, They sell out quickly.

I carry at least 3 pencils on me at work. I'm notorious for losing them or putting them down somewhere. I don't think I'd like the pencil leash, but maybe I should try one before I criticize it. I'm not a fan of the replaceable lead carpenter pencils. Because I like to sharpen my pencils the I want them sharp.

Marcel LeMay I like the pencil leash. It takes a little time to get used to not letting it go and it breaking the line.

I totally agree with you on this video I hate being at the job when people ask me to borrow tools and pencils and shit like that. Always tell them where is yours at? you worked here for how long?

Gr8 little thingy the pencil pull. I knew they exited for office workers but never figured for blue collar guys. I'll probably look some up and buy a box for my guys. For the pencil, I'll stick with good'ol wood ones. You can offset the sharpening for scribing etc. I have a similar long lead one with refills that I never use. Does that pencil (the blue one) have the 1/4 inch thickness and 1/2 inch width like the wood ones?

Hard lessons are learned are valuable but when it comes to drinking ng water, it's a little hardcore to deny someone. Obviously if they show up everyday without water it's an issue but some new guy shows up first day and doesn't bring water, give the man some water. I would have walked off site to go get some water. Fire me and I'll just go get another job. :) Most big GC's have zero loyalty so it's not like the job was secured anyhow.

I have a RotRing Rapid Pro in .5, .7, and 2mm. Got a "Trekker Pen" by "Rite in the Rain" that stays on my "KeyBak", so 💯 on the pencil pull. lol. I live in my Duluth pants, decked out in a bajillion pockets. Has nice pencil holders. My storage clipboard has a red and black lead "Rite in the Rain" mechanical pencil as well; stays in my truck. Never understood the use or purpose of carpenter pencils. Got myself a Swanson Savage always sharp with my lighted level, I find it kinda annoying for fine marking, gotta tilt it a lot.
