In a way, this is a good description of my life to date, though I don't have anything like the same problems that Karen had. All I am is short and fat and introverted; in a part of the country where none of that is in any way acceptable. So, this song really kind of hits home for me, even if a master vocalist like Karen hadn't been the one to sing it.
I'm a 65 year old guy and I've just found your channel and began watching your carpenters reactions and am enjoying so much hearing a younger person discover her magical voice and records. You can't imagine how fun it is to hear someone reacting to Karen for the first time. Great job, keep it up. I like your style.
Yep, 67 tomorrow and an old Hippie and metal head but Karen Carpenter has made me cry for 50+ years now. The most affecting voice I have ever heard, it goes into your soul and touches you in ways like no other. She does to me with her voice what David Gilmour of Pink Floyd does to me on guitar. These people are other worldly musical beings that will never be forgotten. ♩
63 yr old still mesmerized by karens voice..it reaches into your heart and breaks it in two..no other female vocalist touches karens perfect pure voice..G.O.A.T...
This song is not about being resigned to the idea that you'll never fall in love; it's about being resigned to the idea that no one is ever going to love you.
I feel for you. I am 60 and never found the right one. I had relationships, but they never worked out. Lots of disappointment. Last one was 12 years ago. But she had been through a lot and I forgave her.
I'm 48 and have been ALONE for a handful of years in my one bedroom apt with my dog. I've been sooo hurt and disappointed over and over again. I used to be devastated by this. But now, I'm just resigned. This song was so accurate for me. And to respond to Sue in the comment above me... I'm told that I'm very good looking and I am pretty confident in many areas of my life. So, I don't think good looking and confident means you're exempt from this being your theme song. 😕
Although she may be on the other side of the portal, I am certain that she does know how much people loved her and still miss her dearly. Myself included. When I pass through that portal, I hope to have the opportunity to see her in spirit.
It is sad, very sad. Even sadder is this is how her life was, she was never happy, even after she got married she wasn't really happy and she died shortly after. All the talent in the world she had meant nothing to her in the end. To me that's the saddest of all. RIP Karen.
One of my favorite songs of the Carpenters very sad song goodbye to Love very poignant lyrics fantastic arrangements from Richard Carpenter fantastic vocals by Karen rest in peace Karen
For 32 years, the only thing Karen really wanted was to be loved. I hope she found it in our Heavenly Father! I know Heaven's choir gained the best vocalist ever on February 4th, 1983.
Her voice penetrates people from 15-75. She was a gift and it’s so sad she never understood how many people loved her. She had depression before anyone knew what depression is. Im a 58 year old man and I’m crying too. Her voice goes from her mouth to our ❤️
@@Warriorking.1963 Many were, but it spawned a whole new genre of heavy rock (and some slightly heavy) ballads. It also brought in some new fans as well.
Incredibke though Karen's voice was, let's not forget her brother Richard who not only arranged the songs, wrote the harmony lines and joined her on the unsurpassed vocals. RIP Angel. I have been listening to this song for 50 years and am still typing through tears at the sounds. Thanks for uploading this.
Your reactions to the Carpenters are absolutely the same that I felt about them back in the day. "That voice." She reached into your heart with "that voice." There's never been another like her.
Karen had the most beautiful smooth voice ever. She rarely "belted" out songs but rather, sang just above a whisper. Her brother Richard, was himself, an accomplished composer and music director. Together, their harmonies rocked the 70's, and early 80's. Before Karen was known for her vocals, she was already considered one of America's most talented drummers! I was so blessed to have grown up with their music!
"You did that on purpose!" Hearing Karen sing such a plaintive song is definitely heart-wrenching. I love your tears. Thank you for loving the Karen Carpenter that I've loved for so many years.
Im a man, 60 years old , still working hard, good health, but with a weird problem: Im flooded with tears when i hear Karen Carpenter ... no idea whats about, its confidential, dont spread it.
This is what is considered to be the very first "power ballad" ever. Never before had there been the soaring fuzz guitar on a love song prior the this track. The Carpenters even received some hate mail over this song. Very groundbreaking for its time.
Tony Peluso was the guitarist. I was Richard's idea to have a fuzz guitar solo, but Tony came up with the solo arrangement. The rest is wonderful history...
She lived what she sang , if it makes you cry thats because when she lived that emotion she cried too. A true treasure and a beautiful soul. The generation that grows up not knowing her unfortunately truly missed out on a once in a lifetime talent . And Richard wrote this .
I remember hearing this song as a kid and thinking, it's just a song-- this beautiful woman with a gorgeous voice isn't singing this about herself. Then she died, at only 32. Now... It is very sad to listen to. You never have to hide or apologize for your tears, sweetheart. I wish more men would show us more of their emotions-- always fighting them back, gulping them down, is terrible for human beings, male and female. Thank you for doing this one, and for letting your very appropriate feelings show.
Karen was a beautiful person, with heart full of love and spirit, unfortunately, she suffered some horrible depression, and passed away from ANOREXIA - NERVOSA, a terrible, disease that was not understood in the medical field in the day. Miss you KAREN.
Hello from Connecticut where the Carpenters lived many years ago. Thanks for the emotional reaction to the voice of an Angel. I had tears in my eyes too. I always do when I listen to Karen. She left us way to soon. It's so sad.
Karen saved herself for marriage for many years. She finally found an older man whom she thought loved her. But, he was only after her money and they divorced after 14 months. She never recovered from the experience. This song was truly Karen's. 😮💨
We don't enjoy that you cry, we enjoy that you are raw, pure and honest with your emotions. That's what makes you as a presenter stand out. A beautiful woman from the inside out, then the outside in. It shows in your eyes. The eyes never lie. Thank you for you and fulfilling your channel's purpose. BTW, it is ok to be a sucker for a love story/song...many of us romantics are.
Exactly. It was a big deal. Controversial..At that time, it was thought by "introducing this element" it would change their image. To "Hard rock"That was business side. But these people had made millions already and were followed internationally- especially Japan. What many people don't get is that these people were serious musicians in their own right., especially Richard. Tons of talent and training. These people are accomplished players . They knew behind the scenes editing, dubbing, tracking. Herb Alpert didn't screw them either.
This takes me back to Summer 1972, such a long time ago....this song still hits me between the eyes and in the heart. So many guys only listen to this song for the guitar solo in the last part of the song. they miss the whole point and only view it as a song you have to wade through to get to the "good" part. Morons.
If it is any consolation this album “A Song For You” was early on in their career. If you like vinyl it’s a must have. The mood of the album is a bit melancholy and mature in themes. This song is important tho because the structure is pure power rock ballad in a “soft” song.
My eyes flow for I miss her, her voice. What a treasure the world lost. They flow because she didn't find that. They flow too if you never do. May you.
If I would have been a little bit older I would have married Karen and made her the happiest woman in the world. I was so attracted to her and her voice would take me away to another time and place. I will look for you in Haven someday my Karen. I'll always love you! ❤️
Yes, it’s sad for all of us who don’t have much luck in that department. Karen was only 32 when she passed and being that young she probably would have found the love she desperately wanted. I’ve seen documentaries that seem to indicate that she was kind of marginalized by her Mother in favor of Richard who was the golden boy in her eyes. Some of these issues she had to deal with were obviously deep seated and ultimately manifested in destructive ways. It’s just so sad.
Some people say that the only thing the Carpenters needed to succeed was Karen, but that's like saying, if you want to fly from LA to New York, all you need is a pilot. Karen was a great pilot, maybe the greatest.... but Richard was the airplane. That's why there is an "s" at the end of Carpenter.
Her voice gives me chills to this day every time I hear her perfect voice. Combine her voice with her brothers arrangements and it's pure magic. The guitar in this song was not in any way what we heard from them normally but pure genius to think of doing this.
Hey Ken the single life isn't so bad, I've been single for the past 21 years and it's been the happiest years of my life. Marriage today isn't what it's cracked up to be not that I've been married. So come on, life is short and enjoy everyday like it's your last. 😊😊😊😊😊
Takes courage to really -really listen to this woman. Also takes work to stay with her flow. Serious sounds. There is power coming out of that being. You got a lot of reacting to do just to get through it. That voice and spirit rattles the brain and no words come out of your mouth. She could just do it. There are few other examples in this world . They know we need to cry. Entertainers have been doing that thru history. Karen could probably tear up folks from Mars.
I love it when the younger generation gets to experience the beautiful music and lyrics that I grew up with. The Carpenters were my favorites because of her beautiful voice, the incredible harmonies, music arrangements and perfect songs for her voice. Her brother Richard was the brains behind the arrangements. Love your reviews. I’m a fan now.
When you relaize her story and how utterly devistated she was thanks to the family she was trying to please you can understand why she had so much despair.
This song is a window to her real life….it’s heart breaking but true…she was never happy….she was told what to do..even not to play her drums….which she love to do…they told her she has to be in the foreground not the background….
What you don't realize until you really listen to this song is the incredible breath control Karen had. Listen to the lyrics she is singing... they just go on and on and on without a pause, without a chance to grab a breath. Unbelievable! Very few singers of any generation could've pulled it off. And she makes it sound effortless. Try singing along with her... you'll see what I'm talking about...
What a great reaction. Karen Carpenter can touch you with just her voice, but the lyrics are beyond sad. It’s obvious you felt this song, so sad she passed way too soon.
Angela, I love and wrap myself up in your reactions. I don't believe viewers purposefully request 'tear jerkers' to make you tear up. Rather than that, I believe it's done because your reactions are true and from the bottom of your heart and the depths of your soul, they're honest. It's so refreshing to watch your heartfelt reactions to music. I have something I'm hoping you can get into and I promise it won't pull on your heart strings. I have a group from New Zealand called The Black Seeds. The two tunes I like best are, 'Cool Me Down' and 'So True'. I'm looking forward to catching your reaction to this group and I hope you can find the time to indulge yourself of this group's repertoire.
Don't feel bad about the tears, sweet lady....I'm a 68 year male and I'm leaking too...She was my favorite female vocalist of all time and as a long time drummer/percussionist myself,I also very much appreciated her drumming and percussion ability...She actually was an amazing, multitalented person and performer..
so touchable, I feel like you, same age, getting 68 this year remember of this song bc this surprisingly guitar solo, Karen was such a sweetheart. Died much too young.
