Karen was the greatest female pop singer, Aretha was the greatest female soul singer, Grace Slick was the greatest female rock singer, and Ella was the greatest female jazz singer. That way they each get the credit they deserve without treading on the other's genre.
Youth today exercise more individual choice when choosing music. Karen already has survived but her music is so good and her story so poignant that her music will survive forever.
My grandpa passed away last yr from cancer. The only video i have of him is him singing to this song snd playing the guitar . This reminds me of him and i immediately ugly cry. It hurts so much having to lose him who raised me my whole life . I didnt even get to say goodbye and thank him and tell him i love him. My life changed after that. It made me appreciate the people around me more than i have and tell them how much i love them and i am grateful to have them. He was the wisest and most wonderful man i have ever known and met. Now My future children will never get the chance to have him in their life .
I grew up with the Carpenters. Karen had the voice of an angel. I listen to them quite often now. I'm 58 and I envy God sometimes. He gets to hear her sing now. Maybe someday God willing, I'll get a front row seat

I think the original post meant he grew up listening to the Carpenter's.... what's funny I grew up waving at Richard and Karen as they drove by my house on Cedartree Rd in Downey... we'd be outside on our bicycles and you could see the Carpenter's Van coming up the street ...I didn't know them though just lived and grew up in Downey. While in the lady's department at JCPENNEY with my Mom about 1969-1970(I was 6-7yo) my Mom got this huge smile on her face and said to me ... look Eric there's Karen Carpenter! Mom and I would always drive by their house during Xmas to admire their Christmas Decorations on their home! When Karen would drive by she always had her feet up on the dashboard and give us a huge smile and wave ! That's all I have to tell other than I miss both Karen and my Mom. Agree with you Paul. The execution of the music is just so damn perfect. And I suppose it was the pressure of attaining and holding perfection was what ultimately caused KC's demise. Poor thing, she was really just a kid trying to be everybody's concept of perfection. I suppose we were fortunate to have her loveliness in our lives even for a short time.

The way the story goes, KC was ready to call the marriage off, but Agnes would have none of it. The wedding invitations had already been sent out!
I’m 67 yrs old and to this day I have yet to hear a voice like hers - angelic. It breaks my heart that such a beautiful talent like hers left us so soon. 😢

Hands down, the best female vocalist of her generation and, arguably, of all time. Pure and simple yet elegant, she sang the song without a lot of tricks or vocal acrobatics. No shouting. Her articulation of the lyrics was perfect. She sang both the low and high notes equally well, weaving them like smooth silk in one breath. Many musical legends have admired Karen Carpenter’s voice: John Lennon, Leon Russell, Paul Williams, Paul MCartney, Michael Jackson, Peter Cetera of “Chicago”, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Harry Mancini, etc. Her talent was simply out-of-this-world.

Nice words.... though the good lord had nothing to with her untimely death. She had a decease that was not generally understood in the 70's and 80's and her heart gave up as a result. Very sad but one thing we can all agree on is that she is in heaven and heaven is a better place for it.
There was always such a poignantly beautiful, poetic sincerity to how she sang. And it was effectually heartfelt, both then and now. Wow, it's incredibly hard to fathom that she's been gone for nearly 40 years. RIP, Karen Carpenter.

This was my grandmother’s favorite band. Everytime I hear this specific song I always think of her standing beside me and smiling, telling me how proud she is because of me. I love you lola, take care of lolo up there
I grew up in Downey CA and had the opportunity to met Karen and her brother in the late 70s two of the nicest people you would ever want to meet. RIP Karen you are missed and your voice will always be golden to my heart.
She is second to none and her brother brought out the best in her with the songs he wrote for her voice. Truly awesome and never to be repeated. I love you Carpenters!

This song is resonates with me so much that I have memorized the sheet music for piano and play it every day and every where I go where I can find a piano or keyboard. Together they have inspired me to learn other songs.Their God given musical talents will outlive them and future generations to come.

Karen had a voice that went directly to your heart. it was deep rich sweet light soulful and brilliant...Nobody sang like her and she will always be recognized as 1 of the greatest voices of our time.
So lucky to have been young in the 70’s and grow up with the music of The Carpenters. The beauty and magic of it all is still strong 50+ years later as it was back then.
Those low notes sung so richly and effortlessly … just that one point makes her the finest singer ever. Add her range, her always-perfect pitch, her depth of emotion in every note, her phrasing, timing, and golden, godgiven tone … please tell me who comes even close to Karen Carpenter as a singer.
There a few singers who would sing circles around her but i guess because they don't usually sing in this style or their color they won't ever be given a chance to show that or if they have done this style and showed it.... They won't be recognized. One name off the top is a woman named Keke Wyatt. I'm not coming for Karen I love her but there are people more "talented"
Eva Cassidy and Carole King. But those two have amazing voices in their own right. Dionne Warwick and Nina Simone are also stellar. But all of their voices are unique and amazing in their own way :)

40 years since losing Karen Carpenter, and her voice still rings, pure in pitch, and rich in tonality to echo across the generations. So very missed, and still so very loved.
There's something special with the music from the late 60's and early 70's such as this one. Its so much more mature and musical than the cheesy, overproduced, teenager-type of mainstream music today. I think love songs around that era are the most memorable and best to fall in love with.

You're right her vibrato is incredible and she can use it in various different ways. She can hold notes dead on in tune with zero vibrato in order to blend with 32 other voices of hers and Richard's, she can match vibrato with Richard or herself, and she can sync vibrato to tempo....very cool.

Memories are a powerful thing. Nobody can ever take away. I'm 57, lost my mom when I was 27.... She loved the Carpenters, think many of us did. Love having memories of certain songs and can actually feel that very moment as though it was happening for the 1st time. Cherish them doll..... It's the next best thing to living the moment.
I'm watching a documentary about the Carpenters when this song came on and it hit me so hard I started to cry, the music and her voice were so in sync...it was when Karen sang "I won't last a day without you" I immediately thought of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Oh what a wonderful journey it has been, I am thankful to have been a teenager in the 70's and could listen to wonderful music like this on my little transistor radio while on my paper route in good old Victorville CA.!!

All of these Carpenters songs have so much depth in their instrumentation. Listen to the drumming, bass guitar, lead guitar, and piano individually. Richard was a masterful composer in being able to bring out the best of Karen”s ethereal, emotional, and pitch perfect velvety voice. They admired each other’s God given talent greatly. It shows in each and every one of these timeless classics.
Richard and Karen Carpenter will go down in history as two of the best musicians in the last hundred years. People will hear their music half a century from now.
This is just glorious. There will never be another Karen Carpenter. Her's is a voice for the ages. And let's not forget Richard . That piano solo at the end is haunting. He was the true genius behind Karen. What an arranger. Golly wow.
