Karen and Richard appear on "The Tonight Show," guest-hosted by Steve Martin, January 27, 1977. Karen was 26 years old, Richard was 30. John Denver also appears as a guest. Karen sings the Cole Porter tune, "From This Moment On."
____________________________
I've only seen a few of Karen and Richard's appearances on The Tonight Show, but this one is among my favorite, because there's a feeling of camaraderie among everyone. I like Karen telling about swallowing a moth - she tries to say that she choked or coughed and ends up saying, "I choffed...!"
Karen and Richard perform "From This Moment On," and Tommy Smothers offers to sell them his "Dickie" jokes. Listen for the Captain and Tennille reference. At the time, Captain and Tennille were usurping the crown from the Carpenters as A&M's big act...
From this moment on, you and me, dear
Only two for tea, dear, from this moment on
From this happy day, no more blue songs
Only whoop-dee-doo songs, from this moment on
For you've got the love I need so much
Got the skin I love to touch
Got the arms to hold me tight
You got the sweet lips to kiss me good night
From this moment on, you and I, babe
We'll be riding high, babe
Every care is gone
From this moment on

Karen really had it all. She was such a natural on TV The camera absolutely adored her beauty, sense of humor, charm and just seems so genuine and true. Richard seems like he’s trying to hard(addiction ). Even in his interviews after the tragedy, just didn’t seem he belonged on tv. Sometimes when I see all these old clips I wonder where she would be today? She had accomplished so much in her short life. Most would have taken a lifetime to do. I’m so glad there’s all these videos and music we do have. I’m sure she knows how much she is loved and missed now. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I went to that charity concert at the London Palladium for 'Ticket for a Toy' when I was 12. It was put on by Capital Radio in London for the charity Help a London Child. My Mum and Dad queued up literally all day for hours with a toy for tickets as I was a massive Carpenters fan. They surprised me with the tickets and I cried. It is something I will never forget for the rest of my life.

She was really a natural in front of the camera and had such a down-to-Earth, inviting, and warm personality. Amazing, underrated sense of humor, too, and an infectious laugh! Although the choice of music for this segment was different (Porter overtop a Bach prelude), her voice made even that become out of this world. A tragic loss

None of them realized she was going to die the day she was getting dressed to go downtown and sign her divorce papers. That doesn't sound hard to believe. They were in family therapy, Richard was giving her lectures, she was hospitalized, she weighed eighty pounds, she was in bed for two months, she was fed intravenously. He knew it was bad, bad, and bad. He didn't know she was a week away from dead.

So many comments about not liking the piece. I, for one, really liked and appreciated how innovative it was. Richard's genius and Karen's singing really deserved more diverse material. @TheLarryBrown 4 месяца назад
He's not jealous. He knew they were a team, as did she. He knew he wasn't a great lead singer, that's why after the first record his leads were few. That's gracious on his part. He also knows and accepts that she's good on camera (better than him), she's funny and he's serious, and people think of her as the leader because she's the lead singer and they want to hear her talk. That's why she's in the lead seat here and he's very respectful to her, not talking over her, not ignoring what she says, not contradicting or correcting her. He knew she did what she did, and he does what he does, and together they were a smash. Both of them knew that and accepted that, He's just passionate about what he does and even if he were only half the act he's got a right to enjoy the limelight and speak his mind. Because she died and because she's the lead singer people want to focus all the attention on her and expect him to just shut up, which is what I think his naysayers should do.

He may have felt that he was an established star and Carpenters were upstarts, he said exactly that, and he may well have felt like there was a lot of fuss over "these kids" and what's the big deal. In the end, they outsell him 10 to 1 and their hit catalog is way bigger. That said, he's great and we all love him.

Not likely. That's not Karen's skillset, training, experience, apparent interest, and doesn't play to her obvious talents that we know so well: melancholy, harmony, duet singing, extremely precise pitch control, intimacy, warmth, velvet, etc. Also the reason Carpenters are pop is because they were jazz and it didn't sell. Jazz is an art form whose heyday was over by 1960. She was obviously extremely talented so it would be within her character to do well anything she tried, but a jazz singer in the style of Ella or Mel Torme or Al Jarreau is unlikely.

I just don't understand why none or maybe why her family didn't saw her illness as a serious problem during those years....did they take her to the hospital for treatment? What she need i guess during those time is a long and personal medications, caring and treatment which her family failed to do. I was born in mid 90's but i read a lot about her health problems and her depression i guess. If she was only takin' care by her family very well then perhaps she's still with us, and still singing with us with that majestic, magical, fairytale voice of an angel.

Karen was great, her mom favored Richard. Withholding approval from mom triggered Karen's addiction and she died young.

I agree. I was not a fan of those cheezy 60s pop tunes like Da Doo Run Run etc. that seemed to be Richard's indulgence. They sounded dated and did not do Karen's voice justice.

I always loved her since I met her a long time ago... (1973 I just twelve years old...) She came and hugged me and kissed my face.... I feel in love with her, since then I have never loved anyone else... When I watch her videos and hear her sweet voice...It just kills me slowly. Karen, someday I will go where you are.... Please Karen wait for me. Today I feel like a widower without you here... Please my Karen wait for me. I beg you my love... Wait...wait for me.

@@billwoodruff9100 I think you’re right. When she grew up, lost weight and got pretty in ‘75 he couldn’t stand it. I think the jealousy and sibling rivalry were factors in her decline.

Funny Karen Carpenter dated Steve Martin for a time. Too bad she didn't marry him instead of the guy she married. She might still be alive.
@scattysafari7742
@scattysafari7742 6 лет назад
I disagree. He was notoriously hard to live with, according to Victoria Tennant. He has depressive issues and a short fuse. According to Richard E Grant he had little patience for Rachel Ward & Bryan Brown's kids when they came to his house. He's a nice enough guy, & he's hella funny, but by all accounts he isn't very sympathetic to others with mental illnesses or weaknesses of any kind.
@DonDraperism
@DonDraperism 6 лет назад
Not being easy to get along, "hard to live with" with or unsympathetic is vastly different than physical and mental cruelty. Karen Carpenter was terrified of Thomas Burris. Thomas Burris, Karen's husband, borrowed 35 to 40 thousand dollars from Karen at a time, leaving her broke. Friends such as Olivia Newton John knew Karen Carpenter was frightened of Burris. Karen's best friend Karen Kamon stated that this was what broke the camel's back and killed her. Steve Martin maybe acts like a jerk but this is a far cry from someone who is an active abuser. Apples and oranges.
