The Carpenters were a brother-sister vocal and instrumental duo, consisting of Richard and Karen Carpenter. Signed to A&M Records in 1969, they had their first breakthrough hit in the summer of 1970, with the single, "(They Long to Be) Close to You," which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late July and held that spot for four weeks. It became the second biggest hit on the Billboard chart that year, behind only Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Their follow-up to "Close to You" was "We've Only Just Begun," which peaked at #2 in the fall of 1970. These two huge hits launched the duo's career, which extended through the 1970s and into the early 1980s. They enjoyed massive popularity at home and abroad, with many of their singles and albums becoming international best-sellers. Sadly, Karen Carpenter died in February 1983 at the age of 32, due to the effects of her lengthy battle with anorexia. Richard Carpenter has continued to keep the memory of his sister alive through releasing previously unreleased recordings as well as multiple compilations of their hits.
Born in 1965, this is the type of music I was listening to on the am radio my grandmother gave me. I eventually turned into a rocker but appreciate all great music. I was in love with Karen’s voice as a 7yo.
Do I know who the Carpenters are? The "Close To You" album was the very first music recording I ever purchased back in 1970 (yes, I'm that old), and "We've Only Just Begun" was the very first track on the album (which was a vinyl 33 rpm record by the way). I also saw the Carpenters in concert when I was a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy in Arnold Hall back in 1976. I grew up with the Carpenters, and oh my, how I miss Ms. Karen Carpenter, God rest her soul, one of the greatest voices of all time.
@FavouriteIslandGirl That's one take Karen, easily one of the greatest female singers of all time. So, if love that beautiful voice like most people do, you might want to check out these other great songs by the Carpenters, " Close to you " " Ordinary fool " " Bless the beast and the children " " Hurting each other "
There's not just one tambourine, but two in the video. One guy is up on top of the letter and one guy on the floor. Most bands can't even afford one!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I saw Karen sing and drum in 1972 .Karen was the best Singer/Drummers of all time in my opinion .Check her out singing /drumming thrucovers of Help and Dancing in the Streets.
Dear, when you said Eva. Do you mean Eva Cassidy? Both Eva and Karen Carpenter left us way too soon. Karen passed in 1983 (41st anniversary just passed) of heart failure brought on from her Anorexia Nervosa. Carpenters, Richard and Karen Carpenter brother and sister and the band, were of the 1970’s mostly. It’s a huge rabbit hole of amazing music. I’ll request Rainy Days and Mondays and there’s a special treat in the video, keep your eyes on Karen. One of my closest friends is from Jamaica, so another Island Girl. Enjoy your journey and I hope the Carpenters Army finds you and subscribes like I just did. She does now what Karen did way back then when it was pretty much unheard of. Even now it is VERY rare. Can you guess? The answer is in Rainy Days. ❤️
@@favouriteislandgirl actually the women of ABBA have a tonality kinda in the realm of Karen. They were the #1 Act of the 70’s period, I believe. Carpenters the #1 American act of the 70’s.
