I said this at the time. The level of control that United exerted against City, even though they only had 30% possession is something I’ve not seen before. From the possession stats alone, you might think United were soaking up loads of pressure to hit on the break, like they did under Ole. In fact, United never once looked like they were going to lose that game. Ten Hag = top G
@@conorneary01 A clock is also right twice a day! Ole did manage to often fluke it in the big games, but then would cock it up vs the smaller clubs all too regular
@@sljfc1292 Ronaldo messed Ole up and probably the Sancho signing didn't help. Too many egos in the same space, and the popularity Ole enjoyed with the fans was usurped by Ronaldo which totally derailed his confidence and authority.
He did not admit he was wrong he said Martinez is special. That means his argument stands that small CB can not survive in PL which is a joke. In highline football small CBs can dominate.
Neville highlighting this whole "style of play" thing is so spot on. Ole was constantly berated for winning games playing counter-attacking football, like somehow there's only one correct way to get 3 points boring the opposition into submission like Pep. I love watching us play under Ten Hag even if we're not the finished article yet, football is as much about entertainment as it is tactics. Our manager seemingly has a great balance of both.
@@thebizness5596 Ole finished 3rd and 2nd in his 2 full seasons, with a non existent midfield. And if nothing else he's a club legend. Put some respect on the guys name.
@@Rawsy619 Don't mind him.. I assume he's only here because MU is on the up. Otherwise he's in the channel of the team currently on top, whomever that is.
@@Rawsy619 ole is a legend and forever will be. The thing is ole gave us results but didnt improve the team play at all, he had 3 seasons to set up a game play and all he did was play counter attacking.
Ole was not bereted form playing counter attacking football. He had negative coverage from the fans and media because the team looked like it had no direction at time. Ole midfield would routinely give up possession to the opposition which is unheard of at Utd.
Gary a hypocrite tho!...he never criticized the board members who have bin employing some bang average british players over other quality players. Even at the time while ole was there he knows ole wasn't good enough for the team. In addition he ole went and throw sergio Romero and marco rojo under the bus along with sending them to train bt themselves just to kick them out the club.its a shame how these idiots are so insecure that they would almost anything to feel belong.
If Stretford Paddock ever let Joe leave, the viewer base would plummet. He is absolutely the voice of the real NORMAL fans. Not these social media idiots who think football is a game of FIFA or Football manager. Keep him at all costs!!
Exactly. Joe is my favourite. Doesn’t bang on about the same thing or agenda. Doesn’t love the sound of his voice too much and lets others talk but when he does talk, it’s meaningful and impactful.
From the moment he came on board I've enjoyed listening to him. I've always thought if he gets the opportunity at a 'big' broadcaster, he'll go clear. He'll leave Paddock for this reason eventually I think and good luck to him!
Love seeing the SP lads putting these mainstream pundits on ice for the world to see. Brilliant stuff. Fair play from Carra (for once) for not doubling down on his stupidity. Only thing I have left to say is I’ll bet they were happy McKola wasn’t there to lay into them again.
I’m so glad Neville said the point about counter attack football. Fergie literally won us the treble and many other trophies playing that style in Europe and against teams he thought where very dangerous. I remember the 3-3 in Barca, Juve result, countless Arsenal games were played on the back foot and explosive counters.
Fergusons teams could play counter attack when the opportunities presented it self but that was not their main style of football. Utd under Ferguson played all out attacking football. It was one of the reasons why their defence could get caught out at times and be prone to counter attack.
@@bighands69 no we DID play counter attack football. Especially against UCL teams away from home, the amount of times we played a 451 and purely containment football. Even Arsenal away at Highbury, the teams he respected their attack he played counter football.
@@mimikatz There is a huge difference between saying United played counter attacking football when they played teams they considered to generally be their equal in quality and saying their main thing was to counter attack. They did not counter attack against 90% of teams. They just dominated them.
@@lkay398 did you completely ignore Neville’s point where he replied to Carragher saying against BIG teams EtH would want to control games more and more possession? That is the whole point of why we are discussing counter attacking football. Who mentioned about anything else besides you?
The game for me this season that cemented all my optimism in " we are back " was the tottenham game,we nullified them like ive never seen, while Ronaldo watched from the sidelines

ETH’s philosophy summed up is “Possession with vertical progression” and “wanting to win every game”. ETH has principles or as he fondly likes to say “the rules” and he believes in himself and his team to tactically outsmart the opposition. What I love about our manager is his quiet confidence which permeates throughout the club and to the fans. And when everyone in the squad knows there are consequences if you break “the rules” they start to self-govern themselves to do the right thing on the pitch. P.s. I’m not annoyed anymore when I hear the word “philosophy” because he can execute on his plans. ✌🏼

Joe is exactly right when he said Ten Hag is playing this way because of the players at his disposal, Ten Hag wants to dominate games and win. "...some fans think we need to step up, we don't we need to get better at what we are doing currently" that type of thinking is the reason why Gary Neville failed in such spectacular fashion in his very brief stint as manager of Vallencia.
Agree with what Neville said at the end there. I don't want us to keep possession for possessions sake. We will always dominate against smaller opposition and I will happily watch counter attacking football against good opposition as long as we win. We have never been a possession based football team
That is not even close to being true. Under Ferguson Utd were all about possession. It was one of the main components of the style. Keane and Scholes in midfield were masters of the possession game that meant they could change the tempo of a game through possession slowing it down to take the sting out of the opposition or speeding it up to make the opposition go on the back foot. Utd could play counter attack but that was not the main aspect of their style. Many of the fergie time goals came about from Utd pressing teams as they kept possession. It would not have been possible for Utd to win many of their games like that without playing possession football.
@@bighands69 what are you talking about, United played counter attacking many times under Ferguson down the years, quite often in the UCL against the big teams like Barca.
@@HavokRm The original comment stated that Utd were never a possession based football team under Ferguson and were a counter attacking team. My point was that Utd were all about possession football in that era and counter attack was not the main style. Come on my point was not that hard to understand was it?
@@bighands69 when manunited counter attack they maintain possession too...but that doesnt mean united is a possession team...it look like united is a possession team with the more weaker opponents but that does not mean manunited resorted to possession games...manunited is purely counter attacking team with lil blend of possession along the way
Against City we defended really well, but it would be nice to see more of that. We still look too easy to get past at times when we lose the ball. Not fast enough getting back into shape etc. Sides still fancy being able to score against us. They also seem to think they can rattle us and put us off our game. Leeds did that pressing us high and winning most second balls etc. But what was good was how the side adjusted to that and were able to fix the problem on the fly. Even in the first half. Could have won that match. P.S. I'd bet on Arsenal faltering. I am not sure MUFC has enough yet to challenge though. Much of it is down to luck and how many of our squad stay available. City might win it and then have it taken off them in summer, along with four or more other titles. Seems the EPL is out to make an example of them (it may be encouraged too, because the powers that be are peeved about the oil princes not falling in line over stuff going on in the world).
True but we are nowhere near as porous as we were under Ole. I have been re-watching some old games we played under him and a lot of the time each game was like a tennis match. It's not surprising that we could be torn apart with the McFred midfield. The difference with having Casemiro in the team vs not having him in the team is absolutely shocking and he contributes a lot to the defensive solidity and he wins a lot of second balls. We have no depth in midfield. Another issue I see is the lack of ability to progress the ball quickly into the opposition third. When we were playing tennis under Ole, especially earlier on, teams weren't pressing us as much which gave us the freedom to move the ball quickly. Eriksen and Casemiro are great at moving the ball forward. Without them, it becomes very difficult for us to beat the press. What we really need is a ball-carrying mid. FDJ does not look like he will leave Barca any time soon, so we need to find someone who can do that instead. As for titles being stripped off City, the latest news is that it might take up to four years before that matter will be resolved...
‘What we need to do is get better at what we’re doing currently’ - absolute nail on the head. Look at Madrid, the masters of finding ways to win the CL, it wasn’t always by dominating the ball.
Ten hag has worked the league out very quickly due to his understanding of the game a lot of prem teams are one dimensional they are high press/ compact / or counter attacking / or just brute force the latter being so much harder to deal with ie leeds in the first game hag just has a great understanding of football! It’s as simple as that in my book
I agree with Gary Neville's comment at the end there. UTD is not a possession obsession team like citys & Liverpools even it's best teams bore a whole mark of free flowing counter attacking football. It's in their DNA and that's what separates it from the rest of the pack down the years.
Yes he is a steady Eddie. He is not a super star attacking player he is a good quality midfielder that does his job. Souness is 100% correct in his assertion. Casemiro needs somebody to play with him who is creative. Is Ericksen that player?
@@bighands69 The best CDM in the world, but he can get forward and provide the killer assist pass and goals also. Steady Eddie means adequete. How can our current player of the season, in a team 3rd in the league only be adequete? As Fresh Prince says, 5 Champions Leagues: adequete? Best CDM in the world: adequete? Even if you don't think he is the best CDM in the world, you cannot sensibly argue that he isn't in the conversation: adequete?
@@markwrench6334 Casemiro is not a CDM. He is a central midfielder. That means he operates from the centre not the defensive half. People are using the term CDM incorrectly in the modern game. Casemiro is a good quality central midfield player that can tackle and pass the ball and is very determined. Ironically he is the exact same type of player that Souness was in his prime.
Carragher initially made those comments about Martinez because he was coming to Utd. Thats all. His seen players like Chris Perry have a very successful career in the EPL, Who himself was 5'9. The Utd Biasness is not gonna stop anytime soon, From these ex scousers turned pundits.
It had nothing to do with Bias as it was not clear if Martinez could withstand the physical nature of the EPL and it still is not clear that he can. We will need to wait and see what the outcome will be.

In modern football I think cbs can be a bit smaller and still be fine..because football is more tactical now and from corners you don't see martinez marking some a twice he's size...also most teams don't have a 6ft3 poacher waiting in box from crosses...defence are helped alot now by wingers and cdms...they tuck in and double team certain players...
De Gea's skills with the ball at his feet is the most misinterpreted subjective opinion I see brought around as facts. He's pretty decent with his feet, but as the United keeper you get judged 3 times as hard as other goalies. If you look at mistakes that lead to goals for instance and compare him to Allison, Neuer and Ederson, they mostly have 1 each in the last 2 seasons. 20/21 Allison have 3. 19/20 Ederson and De Gea both have 3. 18/19 De Gea had 4 and Allison 3. So actually the last years, he barely makes a mistake. But yet there's this opinion that De Gea makes a lot of errors, yet you see other goalies clowning around, like Neuer, but apparently they are perfect. De Gea plays to his skills perfectly. But if someone high presses you, what is he going to do, dribble players? The way I see it it's the United judgement, same as if United wants to buy a player he's 3 times as expensive as if Arsenal wants to buy him. And on top of that a PL club buying a player is already 3 times as expensive as a French club buying a player. Just look to the Portugese stories lately to see more about that, they are laughing their asses off in those clubs counting money when Liverpool or United come knocking.
teams need that tough player who will hurt the oppositions tricky players. City and liverpool have rodri and fabinho who will go through players and make them scared to attack in fear of getting injured, united until this season have only had mctominay who wasn’t smart about it and u could work around him, now with martinez and casemiro they have that fear factor. U can’t let players like maddison or olise at their clubs get into the game and have multiple chances without going through them or they’ll have a field day
I am not too keen on the idea that Manchester United should always be dominant. All tactics should be about maximize your strengths and minimize the strength of the opponent. Take Sir Alex Fergusson, what was his style of playing. Well in my mind, it depended partial on the squad that he had at the time but mostly on the opponent. He played once with 7 defenders in one game, and once he played with Patrice Evra as sole defender. Tactics is never about playing your style of playing, it is always to see the strength in your team and use the weakness in your opponent. Tactics is always about being able to adapt. For example Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's team has struggled this season. Would you say that Jurgen Klopp has adapted his tactics during the struggle of the players that he has?
Neville is talking my talk. This idea of every team wanting to play like Pep is not us and it has never been us even ten hag realized it's not a man utd way after the two games maybe it's about the players that he has but I prefer a fast pace football than pass pass nonsense.
Agree with Gary Neville. The idea of playing passes from the back is progressive football is just a pretend of being dominant. I would rather watch a counter attacking football than be put to sleep by that notion of playing from the back killing the game with boredom. Robots can execute that so why should we be bored to death watching our team play that type of football?
Real Madrid are a perfect example of how they play well but not always the fluid, front foot football barca play yet look at how successful they are. Spot on there by Gary.
Finally Carragher has finally admitted he was wrong so he has my respect back Souness will take a long time with how many MU players he berates every time
Pained me to do it but I agree with Gary here. It’s quite disrespectful to other top sides to have this arrogant expectation that we’ll walk into the lions den, their home stadium, mug them off with dominating the ball and boss them. That’s just not realistic tbh. These are top sides and top rivalry. I believe in how it used to be in breathe, get through the first 10/20 minutes and get a foothold in the game to then work from there.
