As part of making the documentary film City of Steel, I took the tour of the Carrie Furnace. Built in 1881, the Carrie Furnace once produced over 1,000 tons of iron each day. As newer technologies were introduced, Carrie Furnace became obsolete and its 71-year run of iron production ended in 1978. The site is now managed by Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation as a national historic site. Tours take place seasonally between May through October.
