The only reason I can think of why they didn't put her through (other than the early/mid-2000s being obsessed with celebrity women being extra thin) is because she looked a lot more nervous than the other two
the funny thing is that, Carrie doesnt seem at all motivated for american idol yet she not only won it and is by far the most successful competition winner ever, but is the ultimate global super mega star
There's a reason this group performance was NOT aired originally during the regular American Idol season, and it had to do with the kind of reaction the show would've gotten if the public saw the fact that the judges got rid of Lakeisha Taylor after she sang great and had the crowd clapping along with her, while city audition darlings, Carrie and Vonzell, were sent through. Truthfully, they all did well enough to go through to the next round and had enough vocal potential to do really well in the competition, but the judges clearly did not base their decision on vocals...
I think it's possible that the judges wanted her but the producers didn't. The judges were there for the singing, but the producers were there to make a show. Kara DioGuardi later said when she was a judge, the producers sometimes axed contestants that all the judges wanted and even had to fight for it at times. Unfortunately, American Idol was a TV show first and a singing competition second.
@idolwatcher0: watch hawaii auditions season 3 episode. Crystal Akana had pipes and Randy and Paula said no to her. With the voting block Hawaii turned out to be, she might have won the whole thing!!! They did this all the time!!!
They had to get rid of the “fodder” contestants whose auditions weren’t aired/didn’t get any airtime because they couldn’t comprise the whole top 24 of a whole bunch of nobodies and clearly they didn’t think Lakeisha would make it very far so they didn’t send her through
in all honesty..Carrie was boring in this performance. Lakeisha went for a higher note than the original record. Vonzell at least played around with her voice a bit for a flirtatious vibe.
You can find Lakeisha in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area knock'em dead from week to week with her outstanding performances... She only got better Dennis!
Paula clearly didn't look happy, but I don't think that's because she was unhappy or not satisfied with Lakeisha's performance. I do believe she was really sad because she already knew they would have to send her home even if she was the best performer. That's the reality. Lakeisha was the best one out there with a real talent, but unfortunately if you don't have a look, you can't make a big career unless you're really lucky
I agree with you to an extent. The producers picked their winner in those early season and cut any contestant early on that was deemed a real threat to them. This was simply a case of that. Vonzell was no threat vocally to Carrie so they kept her to fill the diva spot!!!
These kind of shows are really cruel. Talented people are cruelly sent back home while the music business is filled with people that without auto-tune sound like s**t.
See, all three are talented. The girl who was sent packing, Lakeisha, obviously had a great voice, but we weren't there, and we're not judges. They're looking for the American Idol, not exactly the American With the Best Singing Voice. They saw something in Carrie (and the other girl, Vonzel) that would make her a perfect choice for the American Idol. Talented, and with great appeal. So while you all claim to love Lakeisha and think she was robbed, I think what came out was they discovered a superstar in another contestant.
It's unbelievable, isn't it? The judges had to know that despite a few struggles in Hollywood, Carrie was too valuable to lose. That's what makes the Idol journey exciting. They also put Kelly Clarkson's picture aside as a "maybe".
It's hard to argue that the judges didn't make the right decision here since Carrie has become a MEGA Star. But, this was not Carrie's best performance. I don't think she was ever the dancing "entertainer" type. I think she likes to stand a sing and that is fine since she has an incredible voice
Some of y'all are funny acting like any of these people gave a bad vocal, or you would have been voting for the girl who was sent home based on a 30 sec clip. They all should have went through, but it's also a TV show. My guess is she had a great voice, but maybe not distinguishable compared to other big vocalists. They cast the show to an extent. They have to offer variety. How many people in the music industry in general have the best voice? Not many at all. If you watch the show a lot of the group performances were a mess, but this one was good, another reason why they probably didn't air it, especially because one person went home. Both Kelly and Carrie ruled their seasons, and have very distinguishable voices. You hear them on the radio and know it's them. Not sure about Kelly, but I know Nigel Lythgoe said Carrie won the vote every single week by a large margin and look at her career. On another note sometimes the judges critiques are just weird. Like, they're supposed to be in harmony working as a group and it's called safe. Then Vonzel moved around a little and she's erratic lol
looking back though she cant do music videos in short skirts like Carrie can. And yeah I mean Carrie has a legendary vocal range as is now abundantly clear
Well they have a lot of contestants and groups to go through. Besides, all safe means is that she's taking little or no risks. It wasn't that difficult.
'So now I gotta figure out what safe means...' lol. It took me a long time to figure out what they meant by safe. It would help the idols more if the judges were a little more specific with their comments.
Lakeisha probably made some kind of mistake that the producers didn't want to show for whatever reason. Otherwise i don't think Lakeisha would have been eliminated.
Right... I am too arent i. Did the same as you. I stated my opinion jus like u, we both said it like it was fact. We didn't say "i think" or anything jus made a statement. I just understood that was an opinion and thought you'd understand too.
i think they were all good actually i think they just discualified that first gurl cuz of her looks...my friend tried out for american idol and they said she has an amazing voice but that she didnt have the look they were looking for...
The first girl did take a risk and she was great.... But because Fantasia won the year before they couldn't let another soul singer win.... Not to mention the first three singers were r&b singers Kelly, Ruben and Fantasia.
Correct. The show wanted Carrie this season, so they cut LaKeshia because she was a threat to her. Vonzell was not, I never thought she was that good!!!
You must be watching a different video than the rest of us. Obviously Carrie sang the best. the other two were good but she definitely out shined both of them.
As Simon told Carrie on day 4, many people were sent home that shouldn't have been because they have to balance out the show. In other words, if you have two girls that sing great but they have the same style of singing, probably the overweight one or the ugly one will go home. This is reasonable, in the real world, because the judges also have to look for Marketability, Can they sell albums if they win American Idol. Only two Idols so far have been Marketable and Talented. Carrie and Kelly.
