Lyrics:
Dry lightning cracks across the skies
Those storm clouds gather in her eyes
Her daddy was a mean old mister
Mama was an angel in the ground
The weather man called for a twister
She prayed blow it down
There's not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There's not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past
Shatter every window 'til it's all blown away,
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
'Til there's nothing left standing, nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away,
Blown away

I'm 54 years old, an abuse survivor. My biological father was an abusive s.o.b I still have nightmares. The first time I heard this song I began hyperventilating and sobbing, because it brought back so many things I tried to forget, things I didn't want to deal with. I'm just now beginning to deal with the trauma of my abuse. Anyone, ANYONE, who is or has been in this situation and reading this please get help. Don't wait until my age to deal with it.

I was raised by my dad since age 5. He was very abusive. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer December 2013. My sister and I took turns caring for him for 8 months until he died. I never got the closure I Deserved. Even after showing him a level of kindness he didn’t deserve. This song continues to be very healing for me.

I have almost the same story except it was myself and my brother but I took most of it , I was older and she hates me more I guess but now she’s ams old women who has had two strokes . We hare the ones caring for her making her feel safe and cared for . But I’ll meet my maker one day and so will, she . I do think we are better for coping and we can weather the worst storms in life because we had to learn . Some people like my children who never got smacked or In my case punched and beat on and they can’t cope with the smallest of things because they were always protected from adversity . We are like stone walls it take ALOT to knock us down. God bless . The right thing is always the way to go .

As someone who spent 7 years in Nashville as a songwriter, this song almost gets me choked up at how well-written it is. The craft is impeccable. The lyrics leave little breadcrumbs to help the listener piece the story together. Such a unique concept for a song. What a masterpiece.

I also really appreciate the music video for "Blown Away" because it was a slight tribute to "The Wizard of Oz." Carrie Underwood had a few easter eggs sprinkled throughout the video as allusions to "The Wizard of Oz." Carrie's dog Penny Jean is a nod to Dorothy's dog Toto. Carrie is wearing a blue plaid shirt and ruby red boots as a nod to the blue plaid dress and ruby slippers worn by Dorothy. For me personally I couldn't bring myself to listen to "Blown Away" after the devastating nonstop tornadoes in Carrie's home state of Oklahoma; particularly after the violent and destructive EF5 tornado that devastated Moore, Oklahoma on May 20th, 2013 wherein seven of the twenty-four fatalities were children who were killed at Plaza Towers Elementary School. When I learned that seven innocent children lost their lives at Plaza Towers; I couldn't keep myself from crying. This was the second time in my life that I have cried over the loss of young children; the first time was when I heard that twenty children were murdered by a deranged madman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th, 2012. If there's a silver lining to the tornado that hit Moore on May 20th; it's that the residents of Moore adopted a mentality of "Never again!" after the tornado and learning about the seven deaths at Plaza Towers. This galvanized the city council of Moore into voting unanimously in favor of tougher building codes that require a lot of safety features that can better ensure the safety of the residents of Moore and prevent future loss of life. These building codes require all new structures to be bolted to the foundations, less space between the bolts, reinforced garage doors, stronger windows, consistent plywood reinforcement of walls, hurricane clips to hold down roofs, and above ground storm shelters. In addition; all of the schools in Moore now have storm shelters because after the tornado that hit Moore on May 3rd, 1999 only two of the schools in the city had storm shelters: Kelley Elementary School and Westmoore High School. This was due to the fact that both of these particular schools took a direct hit by the May 3rd tornado. The residents of Moore never imagined a storm as strong or as violent as the one on May 3rd, 1999 could ever strike their city again. Unfortunately, the storm on May 20th, 2013 proved them wrong. I personally admire the strength and resilience of the people of Oklahoma because they know how to get back on their feet after a disaster, pick up the pieces of their lives, and rebuild their communities. This particular phenomenon is known as the Oklahoma Standard. You put yourself last and everyone before you comes first.

Sad to say I lost everything I had in a tornado, December 26th in Rowlett Texas. Year-and-a-half later I met my boyfriend who I thought was so incredible . Then, several months later he grabbed my arm in anger & I said ..never do that again, but he did.. second time I thought of this video. I ran away and he promised he would get help, but he didn't. 2 years and body scars later, it escalated to the point he almost suffocated me.😞 Girls be careful. Never let any man ever grab you or hurt you in anger. Walk away the first time it happens! I love you Carrie for this video

despite everything he's done and all of the pain he's caused her, in a moment of merciful human compassion, she tries to save him, not because he deserves it, but because it's a reflection of her character. But he's still passed out, not responding, and the storm is almost right on top of them. Yet she realizes if she tries any longer to save him, she too would have been swept away. Thus, at that moment she realizes she has to totally prioritize her life over his. She can't save him because he is beyond saving. In other words, you just have to let the abusers go, or they'll (quite literally, I'm afraid) drag you down with them.

But he deceived my mom crying like a baby about it. She told me about it the next day. I guess It was shock that kept me from telling her what difference he told me. But he managed to teach me, that guy used alcohol to get his girls in the sack with him which was the trick that manager used on me. I was ten.

All I can say is, distance if you need too and get on with life as best as you can. I wish no one the life that I had! However, there is light at the end of the tunnel! What people don't get, is that this young woman was abused to the point where she doesn't care what eventually happens to her father. She wants to save him, yes, but in the end, all she can see is his abuse. There's nothing she or he could have done to undo the damage her father clearly did for years. It basically bittersweet justice for her.

I can relate to this song not only because I grew up dealing with an alcoholic father, but because I've been put in the very same position of having to leave him passed out on the couch to take shelter after failing to wake him. Here in Oklahoma the storms can get violent, but somehow the house always managed to still be there when I left the cellar.
@imeaganmooresepilepsylifem8660
Wow I relate to this song to cause my dad is a Achaholic and passes out on the couch and slams doors I don't live in Oklahoma but everything else is the same I lock myself in places while he gets drunk I have to wake him up and put him in his room from the couch

I have been searching for this song for years but couldn’t remember the lyrics. I only remembered one scene and the thunder being part of the video clip ! Thanks to ChatGPT I was finally able to find it ! It touched me years ago when I first saw it and I still remember it to this day! I am sorry to all other women who this song touched them in some way ❤

My maternal grandmother was an abusive alcoholic to my mother, and my grandmother loved my mom's brothers more than she loved my mom. I never had to endure the abuse of an alcoholic relative, but my mom told me how my grandmother tried to run my mother over with her car, and at the time, my mom was pregnant with my older brother, so she was 18. My grandmother even had the nerve to tell my mom she was lying after my mom told her that she was raped by her step dad. My mom had a rough upbringing and wasn't wanted by her alcoholic mom because she wasn't a boy. My mom didn't have a loving mother. My grandmother was mean. So I feel for those who have to deal with alcoholism in the family. My mom decided to break the cycle of alcoholism when she grew up and had us kids. I'm glad she did. All my grandmother's siblings were alcoholics as well.

My grandmother didn't even acknowledge my mom on her death bed. As she was dying, she told my uncles she loved them, but didn't say shit to my mom. She was still a mean Bitch even on her death bed towards my mother. I hate my grandmother for that.

i have never been a victim of sexual abuse by a parent but physical and mental my mother was horrible i was three when she married my step dad and he came in and saved me brought me out of my shell and made me a better person when i was 13 she shattered my world by divorcing him she took me to my grandmothers and dropped me off never came back to get me said i cried too much and she didnt want to deal with it. but this song reminds me of all the times i sat there and saw her be happy at my expense wishing something anything would happen to shatter her world and get me away from her even after i moved to my grandmothers she would come and bring money and presents and i would just sit in silence. my step dad died last year and i hated myself cause i sat there and wished it was anyone even her instead of him. 46 years old and still got toxic stuff with her entire phone calls of fluff instead of real truth i dont we will ever really know each other.
