I remember this period very well. Being born in 1950, I was a teenager in the 60s. The life revolved around 3 things, phenomenal music, pretty girls and fast cars. Being from Texas, Carroll Shelby was a god to us. I had a 67 Mustang as a 16th birthday present from my parents. I got in in Sept 1966, right when the new 67s came out and only months after LeMans where the GT-40s finished 1-2-3 and thumped Enzo Ferrari on the nose.... hard! It was like winning WWII all over again. Thanks to ALL the men whose genius and talent gave us the pony and muscle car era and gave us old codgers such epic memories!

Carroll Shelby : an interview with the snake. So, I don't believe anybody really called it a documentary, and it's worth watching anyway. I already knew much if not most, but definitely not all. And still interesting. But then, my 4 legged furry daughter is named after him. So, you could say I've always been more than a bit of a fan...

35:00 or so. It was very nice to hear what Mr. Shelby had to say about the awesomely awesome Ken Miles. I hope Ken's son gets to hear about things like this because there was only ever one guy on the whole planet who was Ken Miles. This is probably not true but it can sometimes seem like we'll never again see the likes of folks like Carroll Shelby or Ken Miles. They fit into automobile racing in such a neat way and I'll never get tired of hearing the stories of Ford's very spirited racing program in the 1960s.

I am not a Ford fan to say the least but have to acknowledge what Ford has done over the years for the automotive industry in general and for racing. They did not make the man Carol Shelby but they did promote him, his team, and to some small degree his ideals. I am a fan of Mr Shelby and happy to say I had the chance to meet him in his shop at Las Vegas Speedway 20 years ago. If I had one word to describe the man it is " Character". I saw the movie last year and thought it was excellent , I was glad to see they mentioned Ken Mills in this and to see the reaction of Mr. Shelby when he spoke of the loss of his friend, even after 20 plus years. Not sure who the 222 people were who gave a thumbs down to this video but they are entitled to there own opinions.

At 19 I worked for Carroll at his GoodYear Tire store. I didn't really understand at the time who I was working for. He had me drive his green GT 500 Mustang to the dealer to have it serviced. I took all the GoodYear Indy tires to the Fontana race track, and while I was unloading the tires, Al & Bobby Unser were standing on by the pit wall. I was too afraid to go over and say hi. But in my mind I was thinking, holy smoke, they really are real people. I think AL won the Indy 500 that year.

As I grew up Carroll Shelby was my idol. My uncle bought the first Thunderbird in 1955 sold in Texas. In 1969 my aunt totaled the Thunderbird. My uncle bought the car back and started restoring it. He had a hair up his b-tt and bought a new 429 cobra engine. He used Corral Shelby's ideal but bored the 429 out to 460. Man did that car fly. I rode with my uncle once and he had the car up to a145 miles an hour and scared the hell out of me but I was hooked on speed from that day forward. My love for that T-Bird had me hooked on it. My dream was to own it but unfortunately this didn't happen. My uncle sold the car in 1983 for more money than I could afford plus my dad told my uncle I probably would get into a lot of trouble with it. Which is more than likely the truth. I ended up with a 1973 mustang mark 1 with a 351 modified 400 which within a few months I hoped it up. But to this day I am a corral Shelby fan and he still is my idol. Thanks to him I gain the love of speed a the love of cobra's for which I have wanted one ever sense. In my opinion Ford without Corral Shelby helped make ford successful in part with the Cobra.

I have never heard anyone make a joke about this man and his name Caroll. Never. Now that is respect for you. Respect earned, not demanded. A King because he behaved like one, not because he inherited the title.
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 5 лет назад
No king, no inheritance, (but there is nothing wrong with passing what you earned to your own family). You are thinking like opposition to a dictatorship or a monarchy, (as you must see the USA), not for appreciation of individual liberty and our free market that allowed Carrol to be Carrol, (and every great individual to be great in the USA---for us to follow). This man was a individual with a rational thinking mind, and he flourished in OUR free market, (what is left of it and individual liberty). Ohhhh--the king or dictator would never allow that as every "thinker" is shut down under their rule. Man has to have freedom to use their mind and explore the best of it's ability. Of course, with that liberty, he had no desire to rule over people, he just loved his work and wanted to be the best at what he did, (and prosper from his efforts). That---is the definition of freedom.

My Uncle was an actor from the 1960's to the early 90's I went to live with him in 1975, I was 14 and he lived in Beverly Hills zip code, its the 90210 zip code but technically not in the city of Beverly Hills which is the flatter areas mostly, the better places were in the hills, Coldwater canyon, Laurel canyon and Benedict canyon with Mullholland drive running atop the hills being the ridge route that takes you to the beach eventually. My Uncle took me to his garage and showed me the Cobra, I thought it was a home made thing, my Dad had built an AC Bristol body car with an Olds or Buick 215 aluminum motor that was fast then. He took me out and I swore to God I would never get in that thing again! I literally kissed the driveway when I got out of it the 1st time, funny I always went out again even though I was scared to death a lot, that car could fling you out of the car easily, you better be belted in if somebody gets it on, and better hope they are a world class driver which my Dad and Uncle both were , both went to Bob Bondurant school and others, my Dad worked for George Fullmer at his Porsche Audi dealership. My Uncle hasd a 1976 Turbo Carerra pull alongside us, in 1976 Turbo Carerra's were fast, they did 13's and 150 mph but the Cobra blew that thing away bogging it! My Uncle used to blast up to 150 mph and say to me you know you're alive right now don't you? Yes Uncle, I did and today you are gone and you would of liked the new cars even though the older ones were your thing even before they were cool to own, he had 75 at one time in the 1970's and the car then were just old cars to me but today wow he had Studebaker trucks, De sotos, Packards, Chryslers Plymouths. Kurt had a club he used to go to that was off of Sunset Blvd and it had a sweeping left turn if the light was green he could slidfe across it going really fast then nail it on the next a mile of straight road, man that car was brutal, it shot fire out the side pipes at night, his pal was the grandson of Levitz furniture and he had a Cobra too and y Uncle buddy actor Reid Smith he had the Gum ball rally Cobra!

My multiverse dream world has Carroll still alive, ppl age much slower there. He was picked up by GM and developed the Shelby Corvette which GM let him design and build. It was release with a V8 at launch and sol phenonenonally well. He continued with the corvette until n the release of the Shelby Camaro. After the 69 model year he went on with Pontiac to make Shelby Trans Ams. He continued with the Trans Am until through 81, then went back to Corvette with the C5 and continues with the Shelby Corvette to this day. Just imagine what those cars would be like. A dream indeed.

Great documentary, but even though the Sunbeam Tiger wasn't one of Shelby's cars, it would've been kinda cool to hear a little about it since he had a hand building it. Ive got a Sunbeam myself and my brother used to have one of the turbo Shelby Chargers. About the only thing Shelby related we'd ever be able to own. A guy a mile and a half down the road from me has two all original GT350H's he's had since the early 70's. Needless to say, him and I are pretty good buddies now. Lol.

I wouldnt be surprised if the GT350 was named that to be a jump ahead of Chevy's 327 and soon to come 350. Just like he heard about the King of the road car Chevy was going to produce.

I really wish people would stop calling F.E. engines big blocks. This ain't GM or Mopar. And F.E.'s deserve much more respect than a simple title of "big block" even if it were one. Greatest engine design ever, if you ask me. From the 330 work horse to the SOHC fire breathing demon from hell.
