Proven 35% fuel economy improvement. Maybe the business case doesn't add up for a tug rebuild, costly as you say. However, a new tug designed with this ability probably makes financial sense.
Different systems, they could both be built onto the same vessel. But it seems like their advantages overlap a lot. In practice you wouldn't gain much by combining them, possibly (probably) not enough to justify the increased costs.
