Dr. Michael Matheny presented a lecture entitled, "Carrying the War to the Enemy, American Operational Art to 1945 as part of the United States Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) Perspectives in Military History lecture Series.
It was formerly called "minor strategy", or sometimes "grand tactics", but those terms caused confusion and misunderstandings. Nowadays military writing (in English, at least) divides the military arts into three broad categories: "strategy" (what we are fighting to accomplish), "operations" (how we prepare our forces and move them into position to fight), and "tactics" (how we fight).
+davisoneill - Russia and Germany were fighting over control of Europe. We had to cross an ocean to even join the fighting. They wound up taking more of the casualties.
