NBA star Kevin Love’s candid discussion of his anxiety attacks inspired TODAY’s Carson Daly to reveal his struggle with generalized anxiety disorder and how he copes with it: “I may be a little anxious, but I know I’m going to be OK.” Psychotherapist Thomas Kersting says anxiety is “relatively normal,” but if it interferes with your functioning, you should seek professional help.

I've had it all my life on and off, but it never really goes away, I'm always aware it could come on any time which constantly gets in the way of every day things, it got worse 2 years ago especially a week after my auntie past away I had a huge panic attack at work, my whole body felt weak, especially around my shoulders and chest, I felt like I was having a breakdown and a heart attack, 2 yrs on with medication i feel just ok. But on a daily basis I always feel short of breath, it's like I'm shallow breathing , i feel I'm fighting it rather than enjoying life, I used to be positive, laugh, smile and be confident, not so much now, I've almost closed myself off from friends and family, social life.. I'm at my happiest and safest when i go to bed.

Practice accepting into your life until the day you die. Wear it as a badge of honor. It makes you unique. Dont ever resist it. Turn towards it. I suffered for many years. I'm still not perfect but um totally satisfied and glad I went through it.

Anxiety is NO Joke. Until you suffer from it you have no idea. I had severe Anxiety almost everyday for a year like 5 years ago. I was on 2 different medications. I wasn't able to sleep some nights. Also my body was so weak I remember walking through the grocery store etc feeling like I was going to Collapse. It was the craziest/Scariest feeling. Luckily it all stopped as I started doing little things to help like thinking positive...working out..eating better. Going to church etc. It was the scariest time of my life. I broke down and cried soo many times because I felt helpless and was scared when I had Panic attacks.

It sounds like he's talking about my anxiety. Everyone always thinks it's just a synonym for stress but it's so much more than that. There have been times when I'm sitting on the couch, shopping or driving a car and I'll have a massive panic attack. At least in my experience a panic attack often feels like I'm on the edge of death and I'm going to stop breathing. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.
@theresag.4188
@theresag.4188 6 лет назад
Mischief Managed one thing that majorly helped me is just let the anxiety come. Feel it and when you stop resisting it it passes so much quicker. And with time it won't have control over you cuz your not feeding it. Take away the power. And I know it sucks and it's scary but just try to observe it and not feed into it. This has helped me immensely!

Hi Carson, I was diagnosed in my late 20’s with anxiety and depression. As most people panic attacks surprise me. I was teaching a martial arts class and thought I was having a heart attack. That was my first anxiety attack and of corse I at that time had never heard of panic attacks. I sought help and was put on medication and it was to much. Over the years I’ve been able to have the dose lowered to a tiny dose when needed. It was a social problem that nobody was talking about and I hid it from everyone. Now in my late 50’s everyone is talking about it which for me was liberating. Watching you talking about it on the Today show gave me courage to talk about it with my family so thank you for putting out the message that it’s ok to have that conversation. Warmest regards Dave

When I moved to Canada, it happened again and that's when I was diagnosed with anxiety and now it all made sense why I was feeling like this all my life. I have learnt to embrace it, I still get scared, I get nervous, I am always thinking something is going to happen, doom and gloom. I am on meds for it. Music is my best friend, it relaxes me and when I hear certain songs I get emotional. So I know I will be ok. It is something that I am living with and like I said I know I am gonna be ok. I can totally relate to the panic attacks. First diagnosed about 5 years ago after going to hospital twice thinking I was having a stroke or heart attack and none of it was really happening. I was having panic attacks. I wish people would be educated about normal anxiety versus panic disorder. Many people tell me “oh, I have anxiety and I get through it” well, normal nervousness or being anxious over something is not the same as panic disorder.

Bravo Carson for talking about this! Thank you for sharing and shedding a light into mental health. If we have more conversations about it then maybe we have a chance to help understand it. If more people went to therapy there would be less crimes.

life is more complex for people now a days. So many choices for kids, anxiety attacks are more common I think. I used to think they were exaggerations of whinny people but then I had one years later and a few times after that. Holy fk it was no joke I thought I was dying. My heart wouldn't stop it was over 170bpm and I was just sitting in my chair. This kept up for 2-3 hours I almost pasted out after driving to the emergency clinic thinking something was wrong with my heart. Had a bunch of tests they saw nothing on ekg, but a really elevated heart rate that would not come down. It was scary, he thought I was on drugs lmao.

I know how he feels. Carson Daly is an inspiration for me from his early times on KROQ-FM, MTV's TRL and his current time with The Voice, The Today Show, etc. I praise him for revealing this and making awareness of anxiety disorders and panic attacks. This is also coming from a person with Asperger Syndrome.

never heard of the clenching fist exercise. ill have to try this. ive been taking anxiety meds daily for 8 years. fortunately ive only had 1 huge panic attack back in 2009. I would like to seek therapy to find out about different avenues to change my daily behavior patterns because meds just mask the problem and help u cope with the triggers.

Really awsome. I struggle with debilitating GAD daily some days I can barely leave the house. Finding management is the key as we ARE wired that way. I have self medicated with drugs and alcohol since a young age to help with my anxiety and only now in my late 30's am I really finding ways to manage without drugs

Thank you Carson! I am so surprised to hear the "positive" side of anxiety as well, and not ignoring all of it. It does make me a better partner, I am very emotionally aware and present in a way that is helpful at times, but, can also be overwhelming in public situations. Ive never heard someone else talk about the "positive" side to anxiety. Thank you for sharing your story, take care

Thank you so much for talking about this. I have anxiety and sounds just like me. I appreciate that you shares this. We are just people like others and are just dealing with some extra stuff. It is still so stigmatized but shouldn’t be. And, it should NOT be considered a weakness or that we are less intelligent.

I had this for most of my life and couldn’t leave my house at one point because it got so bad but Jesus healed me. It’s a real thing! We don’t need to just “put up with it” there is healing for all of us. If only we believe and seek him.

Best comment on here-I agree completely..... I work in mental health, and this, in my mind, is absolutely one of THE MAIN causes of anxiety. The parents basically fail (for whatever reason) to instill a sense that everything will be OK even if A, B, or C happens.
