Man that ending when sheriff was dreaming about his dad. No one catches it but that line hit so harder than anything else.Sheriff was actually wishing that he would go the end with his father. He was already done with the world and it’s uncomprehending violence, A world he was unable to understand and deal with it. This was the best ending of all time.

It is used during the gas station scene, if you listen closely there is a soft humming, that's the beginning of this song. Makes it even more unsettling for the viewer. The Coen Bros are on another level with this stuff

The fact that there is really no music throughout the whole film, and then this kicks in during the credits is just astonishing. I love the fact that the landscape, distant wind chimes, incidental sounds provide the score. It helps to give the impression of the stark endless landscape the film is set in. I love this film. It's a classic because it really does change with repeated viewings, and like all truly great films you get out of it what you as a viewer bring to it. Pure brilliance.

there is music throughout the film and it's actually pretty conventional. it's hard to notice though because it's minimal and they put it at the very bottom of the mix. the opening scene has music, for example. it starts after sheriff bell says 'be there in about fifteen minutes'.

Y' all talk about "Anton Chigurh" but don't forget that Javier Bardem brought him to life with his badass performance...jeez one of the best psycho killer characters of all times (beneath Billy Bob Thornton at Fargo S1 for example & ironically loosely based on the Cohen Movie). Just saw "No country...." again, so relieving compared to that fancy high-speed boombang trash we have to endure nowadays - hope Tommy Lee Jones will stay with us for a while longer- and what a song by Carter Burwel - fits perfectly ;)

I was sheriff of this county when I was 25 years old. Hard to believe. Grandfather was a lawman. Father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time, him up in Plano and me out here. I think he was pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lot of folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough never carried one. That the younger Jim. Gaston Boykins wouldn't wear one up in Commanche County, I always like to hear about the old timers. Never missed a chance to do so. Can't help but wonder how they would have operated these times. There was this boy I sent to the electric chair in Huntsville a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killed a fourteen year old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there was no passion to it. Told me he'd been planning to kill someone for as long as he could remember. Said if we turned him out, he'd do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell, be there in about fifteen minutes. I don't know what to make of that. I surely don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take it's measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die even to do this job - not to be glorious. But I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. You can say it's my job to fight it, but I don't know what it is anymore. More than that, I don't want to know. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He would have to say, 'Okay. 'I'll be part of this world.

S Guy they do kinda feel like companion pieces, don't they? I mean, both were produced by Miramax, came out the same year, both focus on a sociopath and his pursuit of a goal centering around money, and both were filmed at the same time very close to each other, on the same Texas area. I for one, think both are fantastic. I like No Country For Old Men a bit more though, how about you?
@goosebumpsmylegs
@goosebumpsmylegs 9 лет назад
I am torn between the two; both are superb movies with an anti-altruistic truth and venomous characters that lay deeply buried within us all. I tend to watch TWBB a bit more often and can relate somewhat to Daniel; however, I take a greater interest in what makes Anton tick in NCFOM. The real question: Chighur armed with his captive bolt pistol vs Plainview armed with his bowling pin locked in a death-cage, who comes out alive?
@hassaanmirza4628
@hassaanmirza4628 9 лет назад
Hoo boy....damn, I think that if Plainview gets in close, he might score some fatal hits, but knowing Anton, our hitman will try and shoot him with the cattle gun as fast as he can to end it quickly. Tough call, but despite Plainview's unyielding ferocity, Anton has been killing for far longer and thus has more skill with it, so I think he has the better chance But again, if Plainview is able to get in close than he might pull off the win. Your thoughts?

@ProRanting That's what the whole movie is about. It's the reason why so many of the characters that show up in the movie don't get much back-story. It's the reason why characters that seem to be important to the movie die without dramatic climax. The entire point of the movie is: at the end of the day, who you are means not so much; your story means very little. When death comes for you, it's not aptly timed, and it doesn't have to make sense or be a satisfactory conclusion...it's just over.

Carter Burwell is surely underrated.
@oldgoldtopgoldtop6039
@oldgoldtopgoldtop6039 2 года назад
Carter Burwell has composed the music for many of the Coen's films. The title of the ending composition is fittingly named "Blood Trails", perhaps recalling the different blood trail Llewellyn chose to follow after his initial failure to kill the elk, changing the course of his own fate and the fate of many others. One selfish or foolish act with expanding tragic consequences and "blood trails" that resulted from succumbing to a dangerous temptation. Death awaits us all so chose wisely before cashing in. A lesson that often comes with old age.

You know, somehow I feel that this movie, with it's gloomy and foreboading themes, transcends perfectly into the next great McCarthy film: The Road. It's like a foreshadowing of what will happen when the good guys stop fighting for what is right and the ultimate degeneration takes over: Total, nihilistic destruction. Heck, when you think about it, The Road is pretty much a sequel to No Country for Old Men!

Love the idea but i dont think its going to happen. Most of the Fargo series is based on theames and references to previous Cohen Brothers movies, as they would have to do the exact same thing for the No Country for Old Men series. It could still hold potential because of a different setting and character arcs but not alot of showrunners have that type of stuff on their mind, Fargo was a rare gem that was lucky to be picked up by FX. Fargo is an outstanding show with pleanty of arcs and theames to make me a feel like im watching every Cohen Bros movie wraped up into one, i feel you should be happy with how it is now.

@Jem Dikyol that's why i said could be much darker, and yes, i know breaking bad is overrated as fuck, but you can fucking deny the atmosphere was gritty at times

Breaking Bad is a pretty good series man, dont get why you're spouting so much vitriol over it. Lots of nice desert cinematography, good character development and themes. It plays like a greek tragedy, the corruption of a character, and follows through with it in a very linear but engaging way. It's not the most complex series but it's solid. I think there's a lot more overrated out there. The walking dead for one. I prefer Sopranos and Six Feet Under by a little margin (the wire is good too and Fargo is fantastic... In fact maybe the best thing since Twin peaks ) but man your gripe just seems half-baked to me.

While there is no music until the credits, I did hear some ambience tracks play. One was when Anton was pulling up to the two mobsters who gave him the receiver.

+Race Anon Like the music, it's spooky. A guy called taddeus_ see what you think. I like it. The film is actually about immigration: The film is about the over-riding change that is coming to these emperorially dominated parts of the USA. Immigration, a changing mass of populations about the world is significant in the narrative of the film. The drugs trafficking plot is a sub text narrative for the problems the USA encounters. Particularly, with respect to the Mexican gangs that spew across its border. This is the primary concern of the book and the subtext of the film. Drugs are only a part of the matter. Be scared, be very scared. The author of the book intended to create a sense of impending doom, enlightened by the conversations the chief of the police in the film, have with his previous sheriff and police counter parts. Including the chief's dreams of the old times compared with the present. And, including the naive accompaniment policeman and his police friend locked away out in nowhere-land-desert with his stray cats. This is another metaphor for the impending isolation of the white Americans, in this unstoppable assault on their lives. If the world is made to be conservative and the land rights of those who now own America are questioned then it would seem that their fait is not going to be a happy one or a righteous one due to the powers of evil and organised crime. Even the hapless illegal immigrant simply looking for better pickings in the USA will eventually lead to the Caucasian, Europeans demise. Their fait is a Hobson's choice just like the character in 'The heart of darkness' created by Joseph Conrad and which the derivative film 'Apocalypse now' capitalizes on. The freedoms for white Americans are eroded and lie diminuated by the thrashing and threats of middle Americas masses and all of the darkness that lies there. Be frightened, be very frightened. The Alamo seems to have been lost along way 'a' way and a long time ago. Javier Bardem, the devil incarnate, tells us that he is principled in getting his mellifluous way and tells the white man that it is all decided, in its devastation, on the toss of a coin. Anon.

@ProRanting PS - favorite image, when the blood from the Sheriff's dead body runs toward Chigurh's boots and he casually puts his feet up on the bed and leans back confidently in his chair. all blood and all life runs toward him. all living beings are at the mercy of death. only a matter of time.

The Coen Brothers took a good approach keeping the score at a minumum. Even though I'm a huge soundtrack geek I think this movie was good with minimal music.
