"Carter Out." Still one of the most heroic and stoic fictional deaths I have ever witnessed. Gives me chills to this day. Anytime I need motivation to suck it up, I come back to Halo: Reach.

This was the first Halo game I played, what a place to start.. I had no idea they were all meant to die so it killed me to play through this story

One of the things that gets me about the last scene is that until now Dot had been a fairly unremarkable AI but her line “You are alarming me” to Carter suggests that this AI is somewhat more sentient than we give her credit for. The slightest hint of emotion and concern really hits me

I know that Spartan 3’s were meant to die, I know that Blue team and the other Spartan 2’s are better in all aspects. But damn did Noble team leave a huge impact for me, say what you will, they are my favorite Spartans.

I love how matter of fact everything seem to them. Just mission driven with hints of certain doom.

Scarabs are technically alive because of the Lekgolo worms living/piloting inside it. And it's that reason why the roar at the end as it dies is so satisfying 😆

"I've got the mass" watching this almost 10 years later gave me some mixed (mostly good) feelings. On the one hand...I'm realizing some of the voice acting was mediocre. On the other, there are lines and moments like these that still give chills. Reach and ODST were probably the most moving games in the franchise.

I remember nodding my head while almost tearing up in respect when I played this level in remembrance of noble 1 sacrificing himself for a cause. Shit was too badass

Reach always struck me as different from other halo stories. At least in the games. In the expanded lore you really come to understand what humanity is facing and just how close to complete annihilation they are. Reach does a really good job of instilling despair in the player. From missions like Long Night of Solace to Exodus and New Alexandria. It’s a battle that you know is lost from the beginning but it really sets in towards the end. But even at the end there’s still hope. If you play the other games you realize this. What’s nice to see is the characters in game start to realize this. That this is not in fact the end. Humanity still has hope and the odds might be one in a million but there’s still a chance. And that is always worth fighting for. It’s a story about raging against the dying of the light. What really struck me is how each of the characters took their deaths. They were unflinching unwavering and completely undaunted. Maybe it’s because most of them were spartan threes which were built for suicide missions. Maybe it’s because that late in the war and after so many deaths, they knew they were going to die. So it was just a matter of making their deaths mean something. Not some type of glory where Humanity would say their names for centuries to come but a death that means their people might live another day. Just one more day. They were trading their lives for time. You really see this in the mission the package and pillar of autumn. Much like the Spartans of old it was not simply death they wished for but a good death. I think it’s really well personified in Emiles final words: “I’m ready! How bout you?”

I think people sleep on how Emile was COMPLETELY undeterred Like There isn't even a second's hesitation. "We can get past it!"

The fact that the Spartans shows very little emotions over their comrades death hits harder than that of what any other normal soldier will react

Something about “It’s been an honor sir” just hit different.

Honestly Reach was probably the reason for my younger years' maturity. Not now tho, i'm dumb af now.

I thought of these scenes while Echo 216 was screeching at me like space Ricky Ricardo in _Halo Infinite_ and realized that no one at 343 can write worth a damn.

I remember being a snot nosed kid just going into high school playing this for the first time. I'm 25 years old now and I still get chills every single time I play through this game and this scene especially. Carter was the epitome of Noble Team, and he was noble until the very end. Remember Reach.

Best Halo ever in my opinion. It really was a masterpiece, and even 14 years later it still is impressive. The tone of the story, the sincerity and desperation... god its amazing.

While yes Carter's death is one of the most badass things in fictional history in my opinion. I mean shit, look at my username. I always think it has been under-appreciated or overlooked at how Emile reacts to it. As someone who is seen for most of the story as lacking emotion and or showing the "wrong" emotions at certain times. You can hear the faintest whisper of pain and loss in his words before and ever after Carter's death. Spartan Emile-A239 who has lost everything imaginable, has now just lost his leader. Noble 1.

PURE emotion, the scene hits hard no matter 2010 or 3010. edit, Emile-A239 . you will never be forgotten

Bungie has crafted one of the greatest IP ever. I just don't understand why there are people who do not love Reach. the story of Noble Team and the trilogy of Master Chief are so great that 343 still has a difficult time to handle the franchise. I'm on the 9 times playing the game and still love every moment.

I love that Emile immediately knew what it meant when Carter told them to leave the ship. His only response could be "It's been an honor, sir"

I love how as soon as the door opens 1:13 emile is right there ready to blast what ever is coming

I never realized this, however, when Carter comes in to aid Six and Emile, the phantoms aren't chasing him anymore... meaning only one thing: they got taken out by an almost fully dead Carter flying a Pelican with a missing engine.

Carter's death is underrated.

A bad story teller would have include a motivational speech seconds before Carter's death. Probably even flashbacks. Emile would have probably dropped to his knees in rage and Noble 6 would have reached his shoulder to tell Emile his death was not meaningless and that he died bravely. A good story teller doesn't need to shove emotions by force. Carter's stoic death is superb, the man doesn't need to tell more. Emile and Noble 6 reaction is also amazing. You can feel proud and respect in Emile's words. Joseph Michael Staten is an amazing writer.

I don’t understand how people think this campaign isn’t a masterpiece. Multiplayer had its flaws but the campaign is almost flawless.

Carter knew he was going to die. Emile knew Carter was going to die. Quick respects paid and back to business. Bad ass!!!

Carter gets shot and crashes and dies so his pelican was on fire

My favorite detail is how they all died for relatively menial reasons. Jorge died to destroy a cruiser yet they had many, many more on their way. Carter died destroying a scarab, something players have destroyed themselves in halo 3, just to buy time. It wasn’t the big boss of the game, it was just in the way. Emile dies launching the Pillar of Autumn (this one is kind of a big deal.) They all died like dogs not even to protect humanity, but to give the rest of Noble team a sliver of a chance. Really makes their deaths hit that much harder.

Best story of any halo game by far. I don't understand why it's so hard to make good halo campaigns these days, infinite is horrible.

You know what's crazy and pretty stupid is that I didn't even know Carter was the one who ran the pelican into the scarab up until TODAY. Yup. All those years of replaying the same campaign and not once did I know that Carter ran into it. Always thought it was some marine piloting it. Just whatever reason I thought it was a marine 😐😐😐
