@@gabe1655 Agreed! The fidelity of Carter’s video’s and his demo playing (of cymbals AND drums) are superior to almost anything on the web, including the manufacturers themselves (save Meinl)
I have two 20s and a 22" Z. Also the Mel Lewis 22". The Mel has more nuance and subtlety, but those 55 year old Zildjians have that classic, spot on irreducible sound.
Honestly man, I can just listen to your grooves all day long. Besides leaving this comment on the youtubes, I'm getting tons of stuff done while working from home. Thanks for doing these!
That Agop Trash Hit was one of the coolest sounding cymbals I've heard in a while, and that mean old tin pie sounds pretty darn good, too. Your playing is fantastic!
I just bought the 26" 30th Anniversary ride. Mine is around 3250g, and it is THE most inspiring cymbal to play. You could never describe it as a multi-purpose ride, but wow! Nothing else like it, with that fiery, smokey roaring wash. Amazing.
I got mine at Memphis Drum Shop 2 years ago. Its my favorite cymbal. Every time I walk by it I have to stop and play it And I do believe they have 1 or 2 in stock, or did a month or so ago.
Been playing for 52 years...and I have always said, "the man with the most cymbals at the end of day wins." I think you won...and I don't think I have ever seen a better drummer.
@@carrotsoup7264 Zultan cymbals are made by Turkish for Thomann. They are better than Sabian B8, Paiste PST line and Zildjian S, ZHT, ZXT and ZBT, because they are made of b20 alloy
Great video, Carter -- thanks for taking the time to put these up. I appreciate that your don't try to play the same thing in the same spot on each ride, but, as far as I can tell, let the ride bring up what it will for you as a player. It's a great window into how a practiced drummer with great feel approaches gear. Obviously every ride has its own personality, but as I have started recording more I've found that I really like thinner, bigger rides and smaller, thicker rides. Also, for those of you who haven't gotten it yes, check out Carter's book! I've been spending all week on the first page...
I enjoy how you use the potetial of a ride cymbal to the maximum :) As a die hard Agop man (especially Turk and Special Edition models) I liked the sound of every piece. And that Crazy Chinese ride sounded ridiculous crazy!
Wonderful video, amazing array of pies, and the best playing I could hope to find. Thanks for making this one Carter. Your videos are the best, and the sound quality is golden.
Man, I can't tell you how bummed I am at the vintage Zildjian because I was thinking these were all Istanbul and I wasn't watching the screen, but when I heard it I instantly ran back to see what it was. Istanbul is my favorite modern cymbal maker, but I'm realizing we're never going to beat those 50s/60s Zildjians.
Oh man, that tin antique! Whaaaat the.... That thing sounds amazing. Not likely to come across that sound again anytime soon, nice score. I was expecting more, well, ‘tinny’ - but it has a nice stick and a warm crash like a fine thin Turkish bronze. Who knew? Lol, you probably just set the tin cymbal market afire, hijinks and price-gouging will ensue.
Great vids, extremely musical, you got such a great had at this, blah blah blah. That mask been staring at us for a while.....da hell man. Keep playing, but what up
I got the 22" med sig and 22" 30th but I'm thinking of selling the 30th. it just seems to abrasive in a live setting and the med sig covers just about everything I need.
I'll be honest, I just subscribed because I now consider you one of my drum idols 😂. I too have a lot of 50's-70's Zildjian. My favorite is my 22 60's Medium weight ride similar to what you have here too! I have a 50's 22 Light Ride but to washy for me.
It allows you to raise the cymbal quite high but to avoid having to lift your elbow to ride it. It's a very common way for "jazz" playing. Just try it!
Julien Beghain - It’s to promotes the definition. These thinner rides open up easily. By hitting them more at an angle with the tip of the stick you can get more definition out of a thinner cymbal without having it wash out.
Awesome ride cymbals! Listening to Carter McLean is always a pleasure for me! What a drumming! Only problem for me is I'm not able to play like you :-D
@@cartermclean yeah i figured as much.....keep it going my man...your quickly becoming one cat I love listening too....my dude Arthur Sadowsky put me unto you a while back....groove on playa..
Rain Song73 I use them and they’re top notch. One of the best sounding hi-hats, Paiste can do no wrong. Also, if you’re a big Bonham guy judging off your name (could be wrong), he used them.
Fantastic and helpful in every way Carter! What is the weight of the 17" Trad Dark Crash you're playing? Too bad the modern day Zildjians don't sound as sweet as the 22" A you're playing...... bummer there! The 22" Medium Signature is soooo good! Please let me know when you're ready to part with your Matt C, it's the best for me! 23" Joey is very smooth and reminds me a bit like my 22" Mel...... 23" Sig is sweet and Jazzy! I've got a Meinl 26 that is my most favorite cymbal, a bit darker than yours, and you gotta love that BIG wobble! That last Tin is quite a find and has a very interesting shape, any ideas about it Carter, maybe Chinese? Thanks and Blessings!
Consider using the MJC2 by Vic Firth. These were Carter's favourite before he got his own pair. A longer tip en slightly thinner than the 5A Classic. The stick makes a lot of contact with the surface you're hitting because of the longer tip. They feel A-MA-ZING.
For me my favorites were 22” trad dark, 23” Matt C, and 24” Joey W..but I would find a place somewhere around my kit for that 20” trash hit..unbelievable cymbals!
I have a 19" NS12 Meinl thing from the late 80s (I think, that was a long time ago) that sounds remarkably similar to the Crazy Wuhan ride. Best $10 I ever spent.
My take away from this is that Carter’s touch makes every ride sound amazing. Ridiculous musicality. But on a different note thanks for these demos, they are really helpful and I ordered my Mel Lewis ride today!
Great video carter love it! Btw are you turkish or american? Having all those genuine named ride cymbals, you must have visited turkey or istanbul a lot of times? Thank you for the video, it helps clean my ears off the sound of my ugly cymbals lol
Carter. Is there rivets on your Mel Lewis 21”...I’ve got to know...and if so do you find that ride still versatile with them...I mean if I owned one ride...is this the one?..,just love it
