Animator Howard Beckerman discusses his personal experience with animation pioneer Paul Terry in this sneak peek from his interview for the documentary, 'Cartoon Carnival'. www.igg.me/at/c...
Interesting to hear Howard's perspective on Paul Terry! The way you hear most cartoon history books talk about Terry and his cartoons, it's almost always in a disparaging context.
Terrytoons long have been considered bargain-basement, 3rd rate products. I used to think this, too, decades-later, after my familiarity with them from childhood had vanished. I now know this is a mistaken attitude. Paul Terry was one of the earliest pioneers in animation. His characters & cartoons enjoyed worldwide-popularity before Disney & other studio-competitors gained traction with ever-advancing technical-improvements; in fact, Disney himself said that he believed he'd entered the field too late, that Paul Terry, whose cartoons were superior to most others in those very-early years, had attained a level of advancement that likely couldn't be topped. Disney's initial minimal-hopes were that he could produce something on a par with Terrytoons. Only Terry's earliest films could be considered crude but so were Disney's & every-other studio's earliest-attempts at animation. Seen today, Terrytoons visually jump-off the screen with vivid color, lush backgrounds, and quite-smooth animation, possessing a sprightly, bouncy-charm unique to themselves. They're undeniably funny, too! Terry never had the resources that Disney & the others eventually could lavish on their cartoons but the man produced the highest-quality of which his staff was capable given the financial-constraints under which his studio labored, even winning a few Oscars in the process. True, its characters weren't as strong or as memorable as those of other studios, except for Mighty Mouse & Heckle & Jeckle but Terrytoons shouldn't be scorned or dismissed, for in their day they were extremely-popular & pretty-darn amusing!
