Follow along with me as we carve a leather dragon! Free pattern below. One of my goals is to show you that leather work is more than wallets and belts. Nothing wrong with that, but it can be so much more. In this video I show you step by step how to carve a dragon in leather, and how I would paint it.

Wow. Thanks for this video. Timely video....I have a customer who wants a dragon image on a leather journal cover. Now I think I can do it. Question: I will assume you didn't create the original design that you carved and painted...so if this was a 'for sale' type of project, how do avoid copyright of the original artwork you used. I watched you video on the leather dragon shield cover...that looked like a movie poster that you carved on leather. Amazing work....not being critical, just trying to learn something, The copyright laws are somewhat vague, so I want to learn. I wouldn't ever copy someone else's design, but would use such for reference as in body position, scale shape, etc. Also, on the copper dragon in this video, what did you use for the backing material. More dragons would be cool, as well as old Celtic and Viking style art...that's really one of my main interests. Thanks for this video and sharing your interest and skills. I feel inspired now to do a dragon. I suspect you sit just to the right of Yoda, and the leather Jedi council.

So, first...I have to give the "I'm not a lawyer...this is not legal advice" answer. My understanding is that if you change it by 20%, you're in the clear. I could EASILY be wrong about that. If you're mass producing something, you're going to be at greater risk than the occasional one-off. Lastly...If I'm going to sell something, I will get reference pics, but I always modify them as heavily as possible. Someone is going to chime in and say, "why don't you just draw your own stuff." Answer - Sometimes I do....and it adds hours to the project, which increases the price. The backing material is matt board...the kind they put around photos. You can get it at most craft stores for about $14.00. And last...you just gave me one of the biggest compliments I could get. "Now I think I can do it." Thats what we're going for with this channel...to show you that, yes...you can do this. Now....go make something amazing!

I think you've got Harry Potter's Romanian Ridge-back right there! Great job with the color, like to see how you came to that iteration of the theme! I've never been an air brush user, how's about a regular brush version? 🤔 nice, anyhoo!
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse Год назад
Thank you! Sometimes the piece just develops into something... almost like it tells you what it wants to be. That's what happened with this one. I started with the "copper" color and let it go from there.

And I laughed out loud at the Harry Potter reverence. 🤣

Loving the videos. you mentioned to one person that you use mat board for a backer, but did not mention how you attach it to the leather? I have seen other videos that mention using the mat board to get more depth out of lighter weight leather, but no one ever says how it gets attached to the leather... =(

The easiest way is carpet tape but it's almost permanent. If you want to remove it, I would just use a loop of painters tape.

@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse 2 года назад
Thank you! I would guess that there's 12-15 hours in it or more. If I were to sell it, I'd probably ask $350-400.

Beautiful. Did you antique first and then paint? Did you use acrylic paint? Thanks
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse 2 года назад
Good question. Yes, but I wouldn't normally do that. I mentioned in the video that since I wasn't sure of the look I wanted, I was going to do what had the lowest risk first. Antique was the lowest risk. Since I didn't like the result, I decided to paint it. Those are transparent, acrylic airbush paints.

Yeah, I could definitely do that. Do you have any common mistakes you'd like me to help with?

Thanks for reply. Mainly swivel knife over runs pattern across to embossing side. Or the embossing encroaches pattern I've done a bit of swearing over this😄😄 I know I should stop b4 I get tired LoL

@@TheLeatherverse question. I just got the whole thing marked down with a stylus onto the leather. How long can I wait before I have to start swivel knifing? Can i go back later and rewet it after a break or tomorrow?
@TheLeatherverse
@TheLeatherverse Год назад
@@arkhamaudio5143 Absolutely. I would put it in a plastic bag if its going to be more than 10 minutes or so. It just helps it hold the moisture better. Re-wetting isn't an issue provided you don't saturate it. That can cause it to swell, which can push out some of the details.
