Greg Miller, from The Joy of Wood, shows you how to use just a Hook Knife and a Sloyd Knife to carve a Spoon from a ;pre-cut blank of seasoned hardwood. Greg demonstrates a range of whittling techniques and other knife skills to accomplish this task.
Greg first learned spoon carving with seasoned wood over 30 years ago and has taught hundreds of people in the last 10 years. He has been teaching Green Wood Spoon Carving for the last 7 years. He loves spoon carving!
Spoon blanks, the knives, and much more are available from The Joy of Wood's Etsy Shop: www.etsy.com/au/shop/thejoyofwoodstore.

Great to see a video about carving spoons from seasoned wood. Accessing green wood is not always easy. How often do you stop and sharpen up?

I tend to sharpen in an “as needed “ basis. Some woods will be tougher than others. Some woods have silica in them! These will wear the tool edges faster. Hence I do it as I feel the tools are losing their edge. Making stools from recycled hardwoods give you access to an amazing array of Timbers for free. I often break up old furniture to make spoons.😁

My first spoon looks a lot like that. Didn't have an axe. Didn't have a hook knife. Used a lot of p40 sandpaper. Did a lot of things that would have got me pernanently ostracized from the International Spoon Making Community. Didn't use my teeth at any stage but that was because I didn't think of it...

Thank you for giving me advice as a man in his late 20s. I just collected some rather thick pieces of fig wood and couldn't bear to throw them away. Thank you for the love. I feel the wood is acting like a softer olive wood, but am not sure. I decided to buy a couple tools from beavercraft. Which brand would you recommend ?

Gidday, Scentaur. I find some figs to be a bit fibrous. I hope it worked out well for you. I am biased about BeaverCraft, as I am an Australian Dealer for these tools. As with all brands of tools, there are some I prefer more than others. I only stock the ones I like the most. Same with Mora knives. The great thing about BeaverCraft is that they are priced so cheaply, which makes it easier for new carvers to get carving! My real favourites with the BeaverCraft Hook Knives are the SK5 (which has the same radius hook as the Mora 162 and is also double sided), and the SK4 and SK4L more open curved hook knives. These 3 all come with a longer handle than many other hook knives, and I find this makes the tool much more versatile. Stay save, and keep spoon carving!

Did you have to sharpen the knives during this creation?
@thejoyofwood

Gidday, Mark. I tend to sharpen in an “as needs” basis. It depends on the wood I am using. Some woods cut like butter and some will blunt the tools quickly. During the filming of that video, no, I didn’t need to sharpen the blades. I hope this helps! Greg
