Nice video, detailed and precise. You turned a piece of antler into a nice pipe in a way to instruct the process well, and now of course I have to try this. Great winter project and being a pipe smoker, what a real personal pipe this will be! Thanks!
Johnn Schroeder Glad you liked this project. This was my first attempt at carving the bone. I'm hoping the next will turn out better. Thanks for watching
Really awesome video! I'm planning on making one myself. One thing I don't think you mentioned in the video is that you do NOT want to breathe in the dust from cutting/carving bone. You can develop lung infections that'll end up killing you. You should always wear a real good mask/safety glasses when you work with bone.
ah good video man close to how ive been taught my my old friend Richard lunging bear. I found it quite unique you are putting carvings in your pipes, as that is something I have never done.
Wayne E. Thanks for watching. Give it a try and see how it turns out. That's exactly what I did since I'm no professional...just having some fun in the work shop.
What a brilliant tutorial, very cool dude. Am only now getting into pipes and cigars so was very cool to watch this. Have just subscribed to your channel and also a thank you for subscribing to mine. Have a blessed week ahead and stay safe brother ~Peace~
traditional pipe smoker here. love the vid. but the bone in normal pipes adds a flavor to tobacco that can change the way it taste. and be careful with your epoxy. some can produce harmful gasses , anything you use on them needs to be food grade for your safety and maybe adding a Lucite bit to protect the teeth.
very nice video. I love projects like this. I'm just getting in to wood working (native flutes) and I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Not to seem like I'm criticizing, but a forstner bit MIGHT be easier to drill the bowl. It doesn't have such a large spur on its bottom.
Could you carve or polish the antler when it is wet to keep the dust down? I've not tried this yet. I'm about to carve a maneki Neko with a curved blade and a deer antler. Any ideas with polishing or carving? Nice pipe!
Dust and polishing was not a problem for me. I simply polished using 220 then 440 grit wet/dry sand paper but used the sand paper dry. Afterwards I applied a one very thin coat of Tung Oil to give the piece a very nice sheen. There was very little dust.
what is mods? So I have a lamb bone I smoke from it taste great it was cooked and I just cleaned it .. so I guess it is safe right? what does mods mean?
Thank you for this video! I was wondering if you had any recommendations on how to repair a hole from drilling too far into the bowl that is fire resistant and safe for smoking? Been looking around for if that's possible to repair...
You can mix up some antler dust with a non toxic white glue, saw dust will work too, you want to turn it into a putty consistency then stuff the hole with it, once it dries you should be fine. Antler dust might be longer lasting than the wood dust method, but maybe use a mix of antler dust and saw dust to get the texture right.
I Luvz it... I have some Deer antlers not suited for a pipe, but Im thinking a letter opener, with a Wood Spirit handle... thanks for the inspiration. Anyway what's a Letter... all I get are ads and bills
Doesn't it taste like bone or burnt hair when you use it? Maybe the bowl could be lined with a thin layer of clay, and then perhabs scraped out and replaced once in a while. Never the less it's a nice project :)
I dont have them here nor they sell them.. I have many stainless steal stuff.. food siever for example, but could not cut it with a regular pliers sicessor type. any other idea? I can but a little stone but it work though it need to be adjusted every time I smoke after cleaning the whole pipe.. not practicle.
Do you use a drill press for your stem or just eyeball with a hand drill? Also wondering how long this pipe took you in total? Cool video. Gonna be hitting some yard sales soon me thinks.
Watching this video has allowed me to realize, are there any steps needed to make the pipe safe to smoke. Like Burning the antler and putting something that would make you sick. If anybody knows and could tell me that would be awesome. I have an OLD antler that ive been piecing projects off of, I am unsure if the antler needs any "food safe" Treatment like boiling the antler to sanitize it or emptying any marrow out of the center. Im an extremely new Pipe maker and this is my first Complete project from start to finish. Any of the basics would be nice information
I'll get flamed for this reply, but I've never worried about sanitizing the antler...just wash the outside off with good ole soap and water. After many uses of my pipes, I'm in my mid-60's and haven't died yet. Cheers
Marsh Rat about the 1st bowl of tobacco will taste alittle funny that is because it has not been cured but it is not harmful. I don't cure my pipes etheir before selling them. I make custom orders for some people and depending on size they will come with a carrying bag as well.
hempthegreen I just made a pipe out of some white tail deer antler. Is there any need to seal them, or whatever? I noticed a nasty taste and smell with my first smoke but after that nothing. How do you cure them?
can cure them by just simply smoking your 1st bowl lol hell that's how I do it. im sure there is other ways but I cant help. As far as sealing it up like the stem to the bowl, yeah you can use 2 part epoxy that will work good. or if you can drill a hole into you bowl part for where the stem will connect you can then take the stem part and hone it down to a perfect fit to slide into the hole. (honing the stem down and inserting to the bowl looks much more nicer in the end, and on the + side you can take it apart to clean it.) if you use the 2part epoxy yes it is easier and fast but your never getting that apart to clean. I do both
Lars Buskkraft Just wondering about reindeer vs our American whitetail deer antlers. Our whitetail antlers have a very hard core. Our mule deer have a very soft (somewhat spongy and porous ) core. The whitetail antler is preferred.
I have a basic animal bone longer than a finger a bit.. it is fine but what kind of "net" or blocker do I need to keep the tabaco from getting sucked in to the other end. if I put tabaco paper it works but sometimes it gets burned which give bad taste.. what kind of blocker do I need that allow air but not tabaco or ash.. for info the bone is straight the drawing end is tighter.. when i draw even softer sometimes i see the tabaco getting to my cutton filter at the other end near my lips. it is just that issue any help thanks ? PS i have many pipes but tired of cleaning them cause i like to clean them after every smoke, or 2 at most... bone make thing very very easy to clean. thanks in advance
What is used for lining the bowel with an antler pipe. I am an old artist for carvings, and I smoke tobacco in my pipe's. Nevertheless, in order to get the best taste from antler pipe's what can be used? Thank you: H. A. Garrett
I have a few antler pipes and that's what I use them for. If have any Spent cartridges you can use them to line the inside of the pipe bowl if you like.--- Sam Adler
