The relationship between Carvin and Steve Vai stretches back to Steve's days as "stunt guitarist" for Frank Zappa. In 1999, they released the first Legacy amplifier.
In the years since, Steve has toured the world with his Legacy and was recently finding it hard to ALWAYS have his TONE.
The pedal preamp is a result of his desire to always feel at home.
This is the Carvin Audio Steve Vai Signature Legacy Drive Pedal Preamp.
Take the all tube preamp of the Legacy amplifiers and place it in a bulletproof metal enclosure and take the sound of the Carvin Legacy with you wherever you want to go!

Sounds awesome with the cab simulator.

Thanks so much for this SeanPierce. I just ordered mine this weekend. Plan to run it through my Carvin TS100 that I haven't had for very long. My Jackson 2x12 (stock speakers) is a 93' and I have been struggling for years trying to wake it up. The VLD1 should do the trick.

Enjoy it man! You'll have a lot of fun. What are the stock speakers?

Hi Sean I’m new to your channel I like the vld1 pedal I have 2 original carvin vl100w legacy heads and I love them I used one to record a cd with the band it was in back in 2007 got some great sounds out of it love the sounds and tone you get out of the pedal nice and fat I’m not really into all of that bass tone but love the clean highs on the dirty channel cheers hope you’re staying safe thank you for the video review

Great video! This is so amazing! I'm thinking about purchasing this and it would be perfect to use it with headphones at night so nobody gets disturbed. A question, I have some pedals I want to use at the same time (delay, reverb, chorus, wah, distortion). Can these be connected at the same time using the headphones from the phones/cab voiced out jack?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
Magnus sure. Just plug your headphones into the pedals. I've done that before and for quiet practice it's great. But you MIGHT want to consider a headphone amp if you use it like that all the time. Old Blood Noise makes a decently affordable one.

Hey, Sean. Is that a John Sykes Les Paul? And what pickup do you have in the bridge position? How do you think this pedal sound through something like the Two Notes Torpedo Live with a power amp / speaker emulation with a couple pedals between like a chorus and delay?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
Hey man! Thanks for watching. Unfortunately the guitar is NOT the John Sykes Les Paul. It's a Les Paul Studio that was made for Guitar Center's Anniversary back in 2004-2005. The pickups are Seymour Duncans: JB in the Bridge and Jazz in the Neck. This pedal would work great with the Two Notes stuff. Most everything sounds great with them. Chorus and Delay? Depends on the chorus and delay.

Great review, cool pedal! Maybe you could try to match the levels of your voice and the guitar better next time. The guitar was much louder than your voice...

So, with this pedal-preamp, if I wanted to record this way: Guitar ---> Carvin Legacy Drive ---> Audio interface ---> PC , I could get a tone as killer as a traditional way like: Guitar ---> Real Amp ---> Microphone ----> Audio interface ---> PC ?? (And also get the same result for a live situation?)
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 6 лет назад
simply...yes. though the analog cab sim isn't the greatest cab sim in the world you can plug in directly to an interface

Bro! I have a question, im planning to buy the VLD1. What will be my connection/setup if im going to use the VLD1 on a canvin power amp then to a cab and use my POD HD500x for the distortion/reverb/modulation only. My idea is to simulate the 4 cable method with the vld1 as my pre amp, the distortion coming from my POD Hd500x on to the front/input of vld1 and the problem is where to put my modulation as there is no fx loop.. thabk you bro
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
You don't need the effects loop...the Output of the VLD1 is like the Return jack of an effects loop. Just go from the Output to the HD500
@Ufozoo1
@Ufozoo1 9 месяцев назад
Which output is the one the goes straight into interface?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 9 месяцев назад
Any of the outputs will work but if you want the speaker sim from the pedal use the Speaker Sim ouput
@fedboy21
@fedboy21 7 лет назад
I hear breakups in clean, is that becos the orange poweramp?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
fedboy21 no, that would be because of my pickups. Their hotter output so they will distort the front end a bit and drive a bit harder and cause clipping.
@doedesjel

Having an ANALOG stomp box with three channels and a direct output with a cabinet emulator is insane.... Analog Vs Kemper profile, the digital wannabe pinned out... 🤣 Now let's leave all the modern CPU experiments and keep on making things like this valve breaker here!

Is the Les Paul regular tuning?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 4 года назад
Half step down
@scotthutchens1556
@scotthutchens1556 4 года назад
SeanPierceJohnson Thanks. I don’t usually run into too many demo videos that are tuned down or dropped D that often. The ones that do have it also tuned regular for apples to apples comparison. However, for me, if there’s not at least one segment that’s tuned to regular pitch it makes it hard to get a true idea of the tightness and sound of the pedal/preamp. It really does make a difference and maybe to other players also. You may want to consider that. I must say your miking and production is great, nice and full sounding, some people have unusually thin sounds that are useless for the viewer. This pedal sounds great but it almost sounds like the dirty channel can’t get cleaner with just low overdrive like some pedals I know and own. Example: the cheap now extinct Danelectro Fabtone seems to have all its gain up front; turning the gain down doesn’t do much. I’m sure this Vai model is a good pedal though.

@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
toob maniac what specs did you want to know? It has 2 12ax7s, 12volt 1000mA power....that I may have missed. Two channels, clean and Drive with a second mode on the Drive channel.
@toobmaniac
@toobmaniac 7 лет назад
I was meaning the number of tubes thanks !
@SLAMSTERDAMN
@SLAMSTERDAMN 7 лет назад
toob maniac; There's 2 12ax7's in it, both vertical, so they don't melt off their stands & get loose. It's a concern when a preamp is put in a box, it still needs full plate voltage to knock the tubes hot. That's how gainy guitar preamps run. (There's some old TubeWorks pedals & amps that run at less than FPV, they did that to extend tube life.)
@SLAMSTERDAMN
@SLAMSTERDAMN 7 лет назад
SeanPierceJohnson; Good vid, looks like fun. Question, pls; Speaking of specs, have you any knowledge of the outputs, for consideration of the line out to DI boxes, Daw Interfaces, effects pedals, etc. THX a bunch.

Fred Garvin apparently carvin was trying to stay a float by over pricing this pedal. what a shock it didn’t work. carvin closed shop today.

Let's think about these things more objectively: This pedal could be sold for half the price.
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
Immo Kuß how can you be so sure? Do you have one? Have you used it? What do you get for half the price on the market right now? There's not much on the market like this right now. It's a concept that is fairly new and not everyone who makes them manufactures everything in house in a country where employees are taken care of.

best clean ch? wow you have lived go play through a vintage fender you knoblet
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 7 лет назад
If you actually listen to what I said you'd have heard me say "ONE OF THE BEST" as in there have been multiple. Case in point: 1974 Silverface Fender Super Reverb with a beautiful Schoen hollowbody...gorgeous. So there's the vintage Fender you suggested I play. The Victory Amps V40 Duchess also has a stellar clean tone perfect for pedals and sounds great with strats, tele, LPs, etc. I nice Vox AC30 paired with a Rickenbacker 12 string is stunning. But for a kid who bought his first tube amp the Legacy clean was friendly, warm and immediately begged me to make music. Some guys can't make music with Fenders, it's the nature of tone: it's all subjective. Thanks for watching
