Definitely a company that I took for granted, I remember getting the catalogs in the mail and I have no idea how much time I spent lusting after the perfect custom job. A junior high schooler's dream right there in the late 90s. Hearing about Carvin going under was pretty much like hearing about someone passing away in that more often than not we didn't really appreciate until after the fact that they're gone. RIP Carvin Audio.

As a kid I used to sit and dream with my Carvin catalogs too. This is definitely sad news, and I absolutely agree that it's a company that many took for granted. I'm sorry to see it go.

I feel exactly as you do. My first "real" guitar was a Carvin V200T that I had saved all my Army pay for 6 months to afford. I got it when I came home from the sandbox. It was part of the dream that kept my spirits up on those long hot nights in the desert. I looked at the same catalogs over and over like you did. Thank you Carvin for always being a great company and making such quality products.

Even though I never owned any Carvin gear myself, the company always occupied a warm spot in my heart because I just got the impression that they really cared about me as a musician who wanted the best gear, but couldn't afford it. Plus the made in America thing. I visited their showroom in Escondido way back in the 80s when I was stationed in California in the Marine Corps. That was almost surreal. Also, the lead guitar player in a band I was in, in Richmond, VA had a Carvin amp. I always wondered why the brand never seemed to get the respect I thought it deserved from my fellow musicians. Sad to see them go.

It's sad. I too always assumed Carvin would always be around. I have a Belair 212 and a Vintage 16/5. I cannot imagine playing electric guitar without them. When my Belair arrived I plugged it in and played a single note with the tiniest micro bend and tiniest vibrato, and it articulated so perfectly and clearly with every nuance of the attack, in a way no solid state amp had ever done for me. I looked over at my son and asked, "Did I do that?" I never got one of their guitars, and I may yet someday, but I'll always treasure these amps.

Daaaaamn the V3 and V3 mini amps are still some of the most underrated high-gain amps around. Sad that this is happening...but i'm glad that Kiesel will still be around. I need my hands on some of those guitars.

I didn’t really get along with my V3 and sold it after about a year and a half. It was an OK amp but didn’t seem to really do anything superbly. Jack of all trades, really and for that it was awesome but ultimately had to let it go.

I agree it is a "Jack of all trades" but I do enjoy it. It is a great amp at $400 for the half stack used was a great buy for me. I do have a dual rec and a 6505+, this amp is up there for sure and it's Made in USA.

Alberto5150 Hi mate, yeah I'm sure his financial situation is fine, but I'm thinking about his tone, moving forward. He's an esoteric man and he values those relationships he creates. He's maintained loyalty to many companies over extended periods of time. I wonder if he will continue using legacy Legacy amps, or collaborate with someone new.

Carvin Audio seemed like my kind of company. In-house, electronics manufacturing with SMT machines and wave solder line, cabinet contruction from plywood sheets, to assembly and QA. Is this the last amp manufacturer other than boutiques that does it this way? I'm not aware of others than manufacture the electronic boards in-house. All that I'm aware of, outsource that to other companies and almost entirely off-shore. They end up just doing final assembly and QA in-house.

My first high wattage tube amp was a 100 watt carvin 2x12 combo from the 70s. It had the 5 band eq and volume to 11. Ran a Marshall 4x12 cab with it, anything past 6 on the volume was to loud for anything besides stadiums. I can't remember the model but it was one of the better amps I've ever owned. Oh and for a tube amp it loved pedals kinda like my old 71 bassman 4x10,But much much louder.

🎵I can't believe it! I've used Carvin for 40yrs. My 1st good bass was a Carvin LB40 with a custom Kahler wammy bar. I still have this bass. Years later I customized my own translucent swamp ash deep purple 6 string LB76 and gigged with it for yrs. Great sounding basses(I wish I still had that bass). I have a 500 watt Carvin Bass15 Amp.& the 2x10 compact. Great bass amps. that never compromise!!🎶

What a sad day! I own 4 Carvin guitars, which I love, and always planned on getting an amp. Just never decided on one. Thank's for the sad news, Phillip! And I drooled over that catalog for years too.
@jray5363
@jray5363 7 лет назад
Garegh62, after drooling over that catalog,for years(decades?), I decided to order me a bolt, their cheapest model. (less than $600 back then). Clueless, I picked a bunch of random stuff, swamp ash, matte finish, single coils, birdseye maple neck, etc. and waited 3 months for it. Someone at Carvin called after all that time, and told me it would be another month before they put it together. I almost cancelled the order. Strangely, the guitar showed up less than a week later.??? As soon as I opened that case, I knew I almost made a dreadful mistake. It was beautiful and the tung oiled neck made it feel like butter in your hands. And the sound was so sweet. I got lucky. Everything just came together right. I've got at least 11 guitars, and that one I plan to keep forever. I'm a lousy guitarist but that guitar always impresses people. It even smells like candy. I'm left handed, and the selection for left handed guitars is limited at most stores to say the least. Yes, Guitar Center, you can kiss my ass! Anyway, I bought the second Carvin, A thin line acoustic, from their in stock section of their website. Again, I got a very nice sounding easy playing guitar which was superior to my old acoustic. I rarely play acoustic but that one makes me want to pick it up more often than my old one ever did. I picked up the other two from E-Bay. The re-sale value on Carvins is crap, because most people never heard of them. Some people actually put them up for sale for as low as $200. I've never gotten one that cheap, and I'm willing to pay a lot more for one because, like most Carvin owners, I know what they are actually worth. I've kept a watch on left handed carvins for years on E-Bay and if you find one in the $400-$600 range, you can bet I'm watching it. Carvin is doing amazing things with their guitars right now. Really stepped up their game even more. (unfortunately, they stepped up their prices too). Even so, I've been thinking about ordering another. After 4, I'm pretty sure that I, and you, would be happy with the results, even at full price. As a local guitar store owner likes to say, it's only money. it's nothing if you end up with your dream guitar. You can always make more money. the Carvin corp. actually posts on E-Bay on a regular basis. They posted what was the last combo amp from the store with a buy it now price of around $575. I found the post the day before it ended, and I knew it wouldn't last till the end. A couple hours later, somebody snapped it up, while I was still thinking about it. It broke my heart when I miss out on it. Now, Carvin amps is on my watch list. I guess a used one is our only choice now. It really is sad.

The Carvin Vintage 212 tube amp was the best amp I've ever owned. Yes, it was really heavy and difficult to carry around, but it sounded fantastic. I also ordered a custom guitar from Carvin many years ago. There is nothing like the day you first open the case and see and smell a brand new, one off guitar. Like you, Phillip, I used to love getting the Carvin catalog and dream about the amps and what your perfect custom made guitar would look and sound like. RIP

Yes Phil. I too drooled over those Carvin catalogs and wish I had one of those amps. I was planning on getting a V3 as I heard so much about them. My prediction is that some company will buy the name CARVIN, their patents and the specs, go over to China and start building the amps over there. With proper QC, they can build a very good product, maintain the quality standard and gain an even bigger market share than they've been able to muster over the past 70 years. Like many family owned companies, family squabbles destroy good companies.

I remember when I would visit my family in SoCal, I went to the Carvin store a few times. Those guitars are so nice! About 11 years ago I bought one and really loved it. That's a shame. The Carvin name always represented good quality stuff to me, though you didn't see a lot of it over here in the UK. Their Quad-X preamp was one of the best sounding guitar units I ever played through. Crystal clears, driving Crunch and singing Hi-gain. I recall them starting out as a budget priced, mail order brand. Later they never seemed to be able to establish themselves in the premium market; despite producing some very high quality gear and having some top end endorsees. Frank Zappa, Stanley Clarke come to mind.

I'm right there with you Philip .... I spent many an hour looking at their catalogs dreaming about putting together a cool PA system. All of that equipment served me well for many many years.

Back in 1988, I walked into the Carvin factory headquarters and bought a 200 watt MOSFET bass amp head and a 15" speaker cabinet with that gray astro turf type covering. I still remember the salesman wheeling out the boxes - pretty exciting! Even back then, their audio equipment was very reasonably priced compared to Marshall, Fender, Randall, etc. I think their closing has more to do with just overseas competition. When the company split, it seemed like Carvin Audio didn't up their marketing game like Kiesel did. Carvin Audio was always a great resource for musicians who didn't have the big bucks to spend. It's really sad to hear this audio equipment will no longer be made...

I also dreamed of those amps looking at the catalog especially the huge stacks. In 1970 when I was 16, I ordered a Carvin 80 watt head with 2x12 cab because that was the cheapest thing you could buy for the money. Lots of people had them on our town. I think I got the 100 watt head because of the sticker on the back. Either the sticker or the amp was wrong. Blew speakers twice maybe because the tolerance was figured so tight on speaker handling power. be Bought the Carvin Audio Mach 100 stereo power amp to use with my Digitech RP500 modeling unit. So far so good.

I'm not surprised by the closing announcement. I had been recently considering adding on to my Carvin TRC400A system, but noticed that their entire marketing/pricing model presented on the website had become "wishy washy" for lack of better term. For example, within about a weeks timeframe, the price for the Legacy 3 head went from 999 to 799 w/coupon code to 1199 to 825 w/coupon code. I feel like the shipping costs had a considerable hand in killing the business draw, as it ranged 10-20% of the price of the components depending on geography...

difficult hitting 'Like' here, being this is so sad. Early 80s, Carvin's affordability thing allowed me to buy my first tube amp, fond memories of fretting about the tubes inside it bouncing all over the back of my '64 Squareback driving to countless gigs at Madame Wong's, Troubadour etc---but it always sounded amazing and worked without a glitch for many years. Is really sad such a long term legacy is just gone like nothing! I've never had the opportunity to play these amps but now I feel I should give it a try and maybe buy one since this is going to be a piece of gold on my arsenal!!

Only bass amp I have owned that died on me was a Carvin. Friend has tons of Carvin amp/PA gear that sits because it is broken. No real loss. I can see why they closed.

I have a carvin california carved top and it is one of the best guitars i own. I got it a little over 10 years ago and for the price i paid it was worth it. I chose all of the features on it, essentially a custom guitar! I also have a bel air amp and a p.a. that i purchased from them, and i blast it on 10 and it still works. Tell em to leave cali and come to TEXAS, we will welcome them.

Greetings, I manufacture audio products here in the United States and it is endlessly difficult. Try building something in California and you'll rethink the horrific damage done by the parasites in government. The moment you try to build something, everyone has their hand out for whatever profit you can somehow manage. There are about a dozen different taxes you must pay on the wages you offer and good luck working your way through the 100,000+ pages of rules and regulations that you MUST adhere to or be sued to destitution. If this continues, no one will manufacture here unless the entire work force is robotic.

Just got a micro BX250 used. It's so amazing. The EQ is so powerful. It's basically an entire bay of one of their mixing consoles. Their amps got me through the broke college days so well that I still prefer them over much more expensive amps. Every time I get a new one. I research this video.

These isn't many big league manufacturers that don't have a preamp/di box on the market. Like scrambles or Aguilar. I think there's even Sunn clones These are so clean and transparent. All I have to do is set the amp flat and use one of the those. It's a perfect substitution, without risks or expensive or vintage amp.

I've been searching for info on this because I keep getting emails from them about big discounts so I thought they might be going out of business. I own a V16 amp and 4x10 cab, both great pieces of gear. I belonged to the Carvin guitar forum for many years ( I own Carvin guitars too) before the split and I think the guitar side carried the audio side so I'm not surprised the audio side didn't last. There were reliability issues and the people on the audio side were not as easy to deal with. The audio side is kind of a mixed bag, some stuff is really great and a bargain for USA made like the vintage series but some of their other stuff can be subpar. It's funny because the brother who ran all of Carvin was going to ditch the guitar side and told his brother Mark he could have it if he wanted it. Mark took it and now his son Jeff is taking it to the next level.

A guitar, but no amp. I wish they were more affordable...but they are handmade in the US, so you do get what you pay for.

As an electronic hobbyist and guitar/bass player, I have to say Carvin electronics, not all that robust. Having opened up a few Carvin audio products, mounting operator controlled pots to a circuit board is asking for problems. this puts the solder joints as bending points leading to problems. It's also harder to replace said pot on a circuit board than mounting them on a panel and running wires to a circuit board or even a turret board like the old Fenders did. I still use a PB200 bass combo and it works pretty good but I had to do some work to it to keep from blowing fuses. They are cheaper than other American made amps but the build designs are cheap

I own lots of Carvin audio gear and it has held up well. I was very disappointed when I contacted them for repairs on a bass head. They said that they did not service the older models but would give me 30 percent off a new head. That may well make some happy, but I wanted my old head to work, and who would be better than the manufacturer? If the equipment is disposable, my take on their reply, I'll buy something else, and did so.

I’m glad that I have my Carvin guitars. I know, I know......Kiesel is Carvin guitars but a Kiesel doesn’t say Carvin on the headstock anymore. I have been to the Carvin showroom/factory & that building is HUGE. It had to be a massive albatross keeping that building’s expenses up. I’m sad that Carvin is no more....it’s literally the end of an era.

Blkjakk,, I think, but don't hold me to it, that the when they rebranded, the companies became separate financial entities. Either way, it sucks, my Carvin gear is bullet proof.

Agreed...I'm a longtime Carvin fan and am glad that my Carvin guitars SAY Carvin. I do feel that this is more of a byproduct of the company split than anything else. It also seems that the guitar side has a different vibe since the name change.

I think Kiesel broke off to become more of a "Boutique" guitar like an Anderson, Suhr etc. They probably had to because the Carvin name wasn't selling like it use too. I have a Lefty Carvin and I love it....still bullet proof after 11 years. I like the fact that they don't overcharge for LEFTIES.....and the left-handed guitars are quality and not an afterthought like most guitar companies do for lefties. The only thing I did on my Carvin is put in a hotter pickup (DiMarzio Evolution) in the neck position.

Tricko I do agree with most of what you wrote, but we don't have a guaranteed income here. We have unemployment money, but if you refuse to take a job, that can get cut down. And we do have homeless people, so guaranteed housing isn't precise either. But of course all in all there is way more social security, less so than twenty years ago, but still. And I am pretty sure that Warwick get decent money for the energy they put back in the grid, and solar energy was heavily subsidized not long ago. So, yeah, most things aren't as easy as they look at first glance...
@bryanmoseley6533
@bryanmoseley6533 7 лет назад
What makes framus "better" is that they are expanding as a business because they are having success while carvin is downsizing because what it was doing wasn't working. That is my point. To say that the cultures are different is absolutely true. They actually care much more about the environment and local communities than US companies just about ever do. However, they are still a business that has to make money and US companies have to complete with and all companies should have some social responsibility. They do pay more in taxes they do have higher regulations and have even gone beyond the requirements. I just hate that every businesses failure in California is blamed on the state government taxes and regulations but when government taxation and regulations works elsewhere its described as if its from another planet, and not done by mortals. Impossible to consider that they may be doing somethings better than we are. Not just as a company but as a nation.

Bryan Moseley I completely agree with you. To think that we (the US) can’t learn from other countries is very arrogant & shortsighted. I definitely feel that we as a country could do so much better economically & culturally if we took lessons from others.

I think what did Carven in is the fact that they are factory direct. I don’t know about you but I want to go to the store plug in and try it before I commit to a purchase. I might not buy it right then, I like I think most everybody does shops around for the best price. Here of late I have paid more to help local businesses out. I hate that they are closing.

I played in a band with a guitarist that used the x-100.That thing screamed.! He said it was the best clean sound ever.He used it a Carvin 4-10 in tandem with a Roland Jazz Chorus 150 I believe.He had a great sound with his Charvel San Dimas, so very 90s.

That is sad news. ='( Having grown up in San Diego, Carvin has been a constant companion in the growth of my musical journey. While I was happy to see Jeff and Mark (both great guys in person) have incredible success with Kiesel, I have been concerned for the other half since the split. Fortunately, the Carvin community of players in an amazingly positive bunch. They get together for unofficial "Carvin Bashes", where players gather to meet up with forum friends, try out each others gear, eat and drink, and just have a good time. While kind of tragic for Carvinites, the community will survive in one form or the other. Carvin stuff I still have: C66T / CT6 (Moss Green used in a Carvin add) / LB76 / X100B and 4x12 guitar amp / B1500 and 4x10 bass amp / C68 mic

This is very sad. My first guitar I ever bought was the Carvin that you see as my profile picture, in 1991. I still have it. Yes, I realize the guitar side of the business will go on, but it’s sad to see the amps go. I too grew up seeing the ads in guitar magazines.

First real amp and guitar were Carvin. A VT210 and an SS76. Owned a lot of their stuff over the years. Perhaps the breakaway of the guitar division was the final blow.

I'm glad you did a piece of this. You know, like I have said about this subject, I was never a huge fan of Carvin amps. BUT, I am, like you, kind of bummed that they are closing and Carvin amps will be a thing of the past. I remember going to the show room in Hollywood in the late 80's. I actually grabbed a X100B a couple years ago when they were blowing them out very cheap, because I remember them from way back when, and I thought it would be a cool addition to my amp herd. When it arrived, it seemed the amp itself did not have the same 'sturdy' feel that the 80's X100B's had. It was lighter, and felt more 'fragile'. The tone was passable, but nothing to write home about...I was just generally unimpressed with it, and I ended up returning it with a refund. But yes, I am bummed that they are shutting down the whole Amplifier operation. Seems an end of an era.
