Lovely to watch, very inspirational. It would be most informative, if you show which tool you are using before commencing a process. Thanks, subscribed :)

I just carved my first piece yesterday and it is soo addictive!! I had to get on the ball and handbuild a lot of thick pieces for me to carve!!

Great video Eileen! Your artwork is stunning. I too would love to see more videos. The one thing I would ask is to please do some of the video in real time. It is difficult to see all the detail otherwise. Would love to see different kinds of carvings, shaping pottery, and putting two or more pieces of pottery together to make one big pot. Thank you so much for sharing your talent!

At what stage is the clay when you carve it?
@manateepottery
@manateepottery 3 года назад
It’s a little stiffer than leather hard. With larger or thinner pieces, I’ll give them a spray part way through and cover them for a bit to even out the moisture if it dries too quickly.

nice work! do you have to make the piece extra thick to compensate for the carving? Does carving it make it more likely to get cracks in the kiln because of thin spots? I want to try but I am nervous!

Thanks Annalisa! You actually don’t want to go too thick on these because that’s when you run into issues with cracking. It starts slightly thicker than I would go on a piece I’m not carving, but not by much. I throw them pretty similarly and just leave a bit more on when I’m trimming the foot. In fact, when I do the carvings on porcelain, they are translucent in the carved areas. A finished carved piece is much lighter than a piece of the same size that hasn’t been carved. The main thing is you have to dry the piece really really really slowly. I keep it covered completely for a few days after I carve it out and then slowly uncover it until it is bone dry. I also put it on a slow bisque cycle to baby it through the first firing. If you aren’t the one doing the firing, I wouldn’t stress about it, the slow drying is the most important part. The cracks happen when the thick and thin areas dry at different rates, which is why you don’t want it super thick to start. You should give it a go! The more you do it, and the easier it gets! And don’t worry about making mistakes, it’s just clay! You can always start over, and the time wasn’t wasted if you had fun and you learned something!

Eileen, Thank you for showing your multi-step process. Very interesting and informative. I am a long time potter who hasn't done much "carving" of the clay. You have inspired me to give it a go.

Learned so much watching your process! Thank you. Hope you will produce more carving videos; there is definitely a shortage of this kind of demonstration that is done with such simplistic ease. (I slowed it down and process became so much clearer). 🎈

So it is just a decorative bowl that has no practical use; like hanging a carpet on the wall, instead of being placed on the floor to walk on.
@manateepottery

Redblade What you’re referring to would be called a tapestry. It is also equivalent to hanging a painting on the wall. Sometimes the purpose of a piece of art is just to make you happy. Think of it as a sculpture that happens to be shaped like a bowl. Have a wonderful day.

Tapestries have the exact same function as a carpet: to warm, to keep the chill away. With modern heating systems they are pretty much both decorative anymore.
