Thanks for showing us! Do you ever invert your gouge? I know some people add a microbevel to their gouges so they can use it inverted.

I don't intentionally do it during the sharpening process, but in a way I do during my honing process. When I hone I stroke both sides to re-align the edge. I believe a super small micro-bevel is created on the top side of the gouge when this is done.

The reason why I didn't invert my stroke when carving the scales was because the grain was un-predictable and I wanted some flexibility with my strokes. In my experience I've found that when inverting you almost have to commit but if the stroke doesn't carve clean it's difficult to adjust in the moment.

I have a question for you, I’m trying to better my collection of tools and was wondering what size and sweep spoon gouge do you use most?
@ChiseledOutdoorsCC

It really depends on size and depth of the carving. I find myself using my veiner(#11) 14mm quite often, but I honestly don't have a huge collection of spoon gouges. I'm hoping to add more in the future. I'm also always using the small spoon V-gouge that's featured in this video. It's really easy to handle and control. What size carvings do you usually carve and how deep are they?

Thank you for your response! I actually am a power carver but am getting tired of wearing a mask and the loud noise. I am interested in the depth you do in your portraits. I love all those you’ve done. I’m putting an order together for 4 or 5 gouges plus a chisel that’s coming from Canada and I keep changing my mind on which ones. Also, I was wondering what chisels and skews do you use? Thanks for your help.

I just realized my last question is very broad. I have a 1/12, what size would you get next?

Well if you don’t have a V gouge I would definitely get one of those. I’d get a smaller shallower gouge to help with tight spots. I have a #3 5mm that works good. Then I’d get a collection of different sweeps at the 12 - 16mm range. A #3, #5, and #7. If you can a veiner is an amazing gouge to add to your collection as well.

Ok cool I’m on the right track then. I just need a a larger #5. Was skeptical about getting another chisel over other gouges that I need.
