This was part of a propaganda documentary short "The Shining Future" aimed at persuading Canadians to buy Victory Bonds. And later some parts were remade into "The Road to Victory" as a support film of the Fifth War Loan Campaign. That's why quality of video and audio is uneven.
Main part came from this video • Road to Victory (1944)... Many thanks to the original uploader
I cleaned audio but didn't give too much attention to cleaning video since it's not the most important part here, in my humble opinion.
I'm posting it for message to be heard and for people who are interested in Cary Grant's legacy.

Viewing this almost 80 years later, what strikes me is that this was a propaganda film, and the letter that Cary Grant was reading was not genuine. The letter supposedly was found in the kit of a Canadian soldier, written by him to his young son as he was dying from his war wounds. It seems to me far more likely that the letter was written by a scriptwriter, designed to tug at viewers' heartstrings and prompt them to buy war bonds. Not that there is anything particularly wrong with a state, engaged in a massive and costly war, to do just that.

Exactly! Actually it should be expected. Cos we, being modern people, know now how state functions and how it manipulates when needed. In those times people, especially aimed audience, was not so knowledgeable about such things. And letter/speech read by the man who in their recent memory was non other than cpt. Cassidy, would really reach viewers' hearts as it was hoped by those who created this propaganda piece. Not that it makes the text any less true and inspiring, IMHO. Also... there is a slight chance that the letter was in fact genuine since we don't know the origin of the said soldier. There are always been people with proper education and set of mind, capable to express their thoughts in such manner. And, standing on the edge of eternity, one may have turn to "higher style" knowing it'll be studied and kept dearly by his descendants.

I completely agree with you except for the last sentence.
