Computer evaluations really need two measures, the evaluation plus the "relative degree of difficulty" with the latter related to how many "only" moves each side needs to find, or something like that.

Keep in mind that Steinitz actually won this game rather quickly with black pieces

only moves like automatic recaptures? It is very hard to define what is difficult. In fact, you can see the evaluation of an engine as the evaluation of the difficulty of the position. Difficulty according to the engine.

I've just heard too many comments from Daniel and others to the effect that "the computer says this is equal but I would sure rather be White (or Black)." The computer says it's even but only one side really needs to walk a tightrope. I'd like to think a way could be found to measure that.

I really love these tournaments with innovative ideas and unique theme. I hope this is a step for more!

I reckon that a position arising from a white gambit, with a computer evaluation of around +0.00, still offers good practical chances for the first player. There are likely many 'only' moves the second player must find to avoid instant death.

Carlsen, after Anand's Qc5?: Of all the traps in all the gambit openings in all the world, he walks into mine.

I remember that Kasparov v Anand Evans Gambit game (although not all the moves). As I recall, Garry played the shocking Bh6, putting it en prise to Black's g-pawn. Looking forward to seeing it again!

Yeah, I'm glad Danny mentioned that coz I also remember it - we're showing our age :) (I was in high school then) The Evans is nothing to speak of, objectively speaking, but Vishy surely had flashbacks!

Chigorin was such a good player. I have heard that he tried to defend this position several times against Steinitz. This is pretty strange in fact.

The only time i played the Evans Gambit in a serious game my opponent was a dead ringer for Captain Mammaning from Dads Army. He declined playing Bb6. He must have ben thinking "stupid boy"

One person who'd approve of this tournament is Humphrey Bogart himself who was a keen and quite strong chess player. I read that the chess scenes in the film Casablanca were inserted at Bogart's insistence and one of the boards (albeit blurred) shows a position from one of his correspondence games.

I appreciate tournament directors trying new things, but I'm not sure I like this tournaments concept. I think I prefer 960 to this. Not that I think 960 is the answer. If the goal is to circumvent computer opening analysis, I'd rather see the players making their own decisions from move one. Any time the silicon beast says it's "even" but one side has given material to get there, good luck. :)

Lovely games. I'm pleased to say I was considering Rd5 even before you said Carlsen played a zinger! What it does go to show, though, is that while the computer may think such positions are equal - well, that's only assuming the opponent is also a 3500+ rated computer! In reality, no-one needs to be black against Carlsen or Nakamura with their Queen on d6 and no way of getting their light-squared bishop out after a handful of opening moves... In fact, I would say that is almost lost.

Danny, I hope you've seen African Queen, another great Humphrey Bogart movie.

Those games once again prove to me how bad of a player Steinitz was. Ive gone through the first few WCC matches and it's just Evans Gambit after Evans Gambit with Steinitz playing unprincipled, awful moves and getting run over. Either he'd actually lose, or miraculously come back from the brink of complete collapse because his opponents equally didn't know how to convert. Those games were painful. Meanwhile, Lasker's WCC games are a joy to play through!

I would more say it shows how insane strong Morphy and Lasker were. People had just no clue back then(even world champion), and they played in the middle of that high quality chess

Steinitz was the one figuring out things you take for granted as principles. Recognize the shoulders you're standing on!

It would be fairer if people had to play both sides but I guess that would be too many games. I do think they have to think a little bit further than "the computer rates it as equal" because the games I have seen, well they're just much easier for humans to play from the white side.
