"Casadh an tSúgáin" (the twisting of the rope) is a traditional Irish love song, sung in the sean-nós style and made popular by the 2015 film "Brooklyn" (starring Saoirse Ronan) under the name of "Frankie's song" (played by Iarla Ó Lionáird himself).
It is a traditional harp tune that was collected from Mayo harpist Rose Mooney in 1792 but the tune may be much older than that.
The story behind the song is of a man who is in love with a young woman who lives with her mother. He visits the girl but the mother wants to get rid of him so she makes him twist a straw rope. As he does this he has to walk backwards as the rope gets longer. Eventually he backs out of the house, at which point the mother cuts the rope and slams the door closed.
Brooklyn scene: • Brooklyn 2015 - Singin...
Performed by Iarla Ó Lionáird with The Gloaming
Album: "2" (2016)

I am from Northern Spain, specifically Asturias. In the place I live we all get considered celts, we have bagpipes, we have whistle, we have our own language (asturian) and I can not regret that when I listen to this I think somthing of our culture remains in this song / language Thank you for bringing us this song, I hope to someday visit Ireland and also to save the Gaelic language of its extinction, as how its happening with our asturian language.

North Spain was home to a Celtic people before the Roman Empire. Some of that culture endured the Romans, the Visigoths, and the Moorish invasions. Also, recent evidence shows that the first people to settle Ireland sailed there from Celtic Spain circa 1100 BC. Which sorta confirms an old Irish myth.

One of my favourite bands used to be Llan de Cubel. Seen them live a couple of times back in the 90s. Not to forget Milladorio, Berrogüetto, Susana Seivane, Luar na Lubre and others. Carlos Núñez, on the other hand, was always a bit too high-powered for my taste... Puxa Asturias! ;O)

We stopped speaking Irish because of colonization by the British. It’s still taught in schools, but poorly, so many grow up to hate it. Irish still lives on in 'Gaeltacht' areas; small pockets of Ireland where only Irish is spoken. But most would be proud nowadays of their ability to speak a few words 'as gaeilge'(in Irish).

youtube recommented this to me after I have watched the "a mhaighdean bhàn Urasal" (Nobel maiden fair) from disneys Brave and "Amhrán na farraige" from a song of the sea. I don´t understand one word if I don´t read the english translation but I love this language. I´m from germany and I can´t describe properly how it sounds to me. It sounds so new and so old at the same time. It´s like a language out-of-earth and still it sounds so deeply rooted to the earth and nature.

What was the small strand of rope that the old woman made him twist?

They made rope by twisting the fibres together. As two people make the rope, they get further apart. The girls mother is unwilling for him to visit, so she gives him this job, and when he backs out of the door, she shuts him out. The meaning of the titles is the twisting of the rope. thats not apparent in this translation.

Back in the early 1980s I followed the folk scene here in Australia. The Chieftains were very popular and "Casadh an tSúgáin" ("The Twisting of the Rope") was my favourite of theirs. The story of the song as told to me back then was that an old man, a bit of a heart-breaker in his younger days, saw a beautiful young girl bathing in the sea and was determined to marry her. She told him that he would have to ask her mother's permission. When he did so the mother told him that if there was to be a wedding that they would need more chairs for all the guests and that he would have to help [the chairs were the wooden type with woven rope seats (made from straw or reeds)]. The young bride-to-be and her mother gathered up all of the straw and the old man began to twist it into rope backing up as he did so. As he twisted the rope the young woman and her mother fed out more and more straw forcing the old man farther and farther away, as far away as the next district: "It's my thousandth misfortune that on Sunday you won't be with me as my wife". It is bittersweet to hear this sounding so much like Micháel Ó Domhnáill's 1979 version - déanann sé buille croi do mo chroí níos gasta. 💜 RIP Micháel.

If an Irish girl said that to you these days out of the blue on the beach, you'd be inclined to think she has a drug or alcohol problem. At least, It is nice to see that the Irish don't spend their Sunday's in Church anymore.
