I was looking for more maths you know. Hey, this animal is worth 2.5pts per token, hey, tiles with three land borders may give you extra points for placement, hey, each pinecone at the end are worthless cuz you could use them to get more than 1 pts.
I score 100+ in every game and win 9+/10 times. If you take Bears, Elks, and Fish, you can focus on them as long as they score you 3 score per EACH token (or at least try your very best to get 3 or 3+). But to win you must focus on Foxes and Birds (and one of the Fish cards too) because they allow you to score over 3, 4, even up to 6+ points per token. Once you get the hang of it you should be scoring above 60 for your animals. You MUST score above 60 to consistently hit 100+ and win every game. 'Gambling' with the tokens at the end also requires some timing, sometimes you need to gamble before the final turn if you notice an opponent might also be doing it to get your animal.
Cascadia is a game of luck. Once you understand the simple tips discussed in this vid, you'll find there's nothing more Cascadia has to offer as far as depth is concerned. The pieces/animals you draft and tableau/biome you're building always presents a simple, easy to find best decision. You can never consistently get a high score (over 80) - that requires a good deal of luck.
Interesting. My colleague Cax has played it much more than I have (Nato), but there seemed to be some interesting tactical decision-making. But it is a light game, after all, so I think one has to temper one's expectations of depth.
I have 30 games so far and my scores are going up. Started around 60 points and now I'm doing 80-100 every game. In a turn it's luck but over the course of the game you can arrange the habitats and the animals in order to complete your objectives.
Oh really... Somehow I never scored below 80. Usually it's 80-100, sometimes up to 110. In solo, 2, 3 and 4 players games. So yeah, there is luck in the game involved, but it influences the game much less than you think.
if you can't consistently get over 80 you're just not very good at the game, when I play with my family we always all get over 80 and the winner never has less than 100
um... in my group a few of us consistently score 100 every game (we play with randomised animals), and about >90% of the time I win. It's starting to get interesting because something about the random animal combinations click with me, I thought it was going to be a boring boardgame after playing the first initial AAAAA animals set up, but was pleasantly surprised once we played the scenarios set ups next and now we always play random set ups. I can tell you though, it's all about the animals. If you're not scoring above 60 in animals alone you aren't doing it right. And the only way to score above 60 in animals is getting some BIG points tokens such as those foxes and birds (and one of the fish cards that acts like a fox style of scoring). And you gotta time your 'gambles' with those nature tokens, if you leave them till the very last round you may not get it, sometimes you need to spend them all in the 2nd last round depending on what the other players are doing.
