Cascamite, Polyurethane, PVA Woodworking glues, such as common wood glue or polyvinyl acetate (PVA), undergo a fascinating transformation during the curing process. When applied and allowed to dry, these adhesives initially appear to expand slightly, creating a strong bond between two pieces of wood. However, the apparent expansion is an illusion. In reality, woodworking glues contain water as a solvent, and as it evaporates, the adhesive contracts or "shrinks." This phenomenon is due to the reduction in volume as water molecules escape, leaving behind a solid adhesive layer that tightly grips the wood surfaces. While the adhesive bond remains strong, understanding this subtle shrinking process is crucial for precise woodworking projects and joint fitting.

Sometimes I have to glue up timber that is very slightly damp - or in a damp environment - you can't tell that it's damp at all....in this situation, all the PVA glues I have tried have failed catastrophically. Polyeurethane glues however, have cured fine with no issues - so that's the glue I reach for if there is slightest chance of damp timber. I haven't used Cascamite in decades, but when I did it set rock hard - like glass - indeed, it set so hard a sliver would slice thriough a finger like a razor blade! The wood around a Cascamite joint would rot away before the glue! Ahh, happy days :-)

I stopped using cascamite afew years ago due to strength issues with it being a bad batch ?, i see u have a vid from around the same timeframe, has it improved at all ??

The Cascamite brand was taken over by UREKA Glues and the formula has returned to what we are used to... I use it all the time now and the people at Urika are really helpful... It's worth another crack my friend 🤠

@@WallyboisWoodworking I'll give it a shot again, I've got a set of French doors and a window to glue up all have 6 panes of glass with Georgian beading..i wanna use a waterproof glue but as you know PU glues don't really give you alot of time to get finicky bits together hence why I'm looking at waterproof cascimite

@@WallyboisWoodworking used it for the first time in about 5/7 years and it's a night and day difference from what i used last time, this stuff is about as sticky as PU expanding glue but drys like pva. Definitely see why joiners used to swear by it, gave me plenty of time on the complex glue ups. When i last used it it used to shatter like glass and was weak af.

A sticky situation you've got yourself into there, Marcus, very sticky. Bon chance! 🙃

Tempted as I am to say "Copydex, because I love peeling it off after painting it all over my hand", I'm afraid to admit that my go-to wood glue is always the cheapest PVA I can find from a brand I recognise. Having said that, in many cases I end up not using a wood glue but rather a caulk or sealant or similar that I happen to have handy - I haven't started doing much woodworking, and likely won't any time soon given some family health issues, but for sticking assorted bits of beading or skirting to assorted corners between worktops or floors and walls it seems to both work well and resist water too. Bodge jobs by Bodger MacBodgeface, in other words. Just don't ask about sealing gaps around a door using silicon sealant - took bloody forever and several applications and tubes, as the gaps were damn near an inch deep in places. Long story involving being asked not to use expanding mousse owing to colour, cleanup, and not being really smooth...

Middle one is same formula as Gorilla glue - expands too, and same shade.

PU has it's uses. It will be good if you have a use for an expanding glue xx

Dam. This channel has gone absolutely crazy about ‘ Ureka ‘ 😂. Love Marcus. But it’s abit to sticky to deal with for me all the time 😂.

But it's the glue I have and they were kind enough to send it over... I know it's free Marketing but I was happy to receive the glues to try out... I haven't had much experience with PU glues so that will be interesting to see what I can do with it... Building a small boat soon... Today I was wood bodging a rafter... If any other Glue manufacturers want to send over some sticky stuff I'm happy to make some vids xxx

@@WallyboisWoodworking it’s all good. I don’t blame you in the slightest Marcus. I’m a fan of your content. nowadays I’m even dreaming about Ureka. Haha. So obviously your doing a good job of promoting the brand my friend. All the best.

I would like to see a test of these glues of loose joints with different gaps, they behave dependent on the space they fill, it would be interesting to see the strength in a variety of situations where shrinkage or expansion, and also hardness vs toughness matter.
