Santa Rita was born in 1381 in the region of Cássia, in the interior of Italy, the only child of a humble couple, who could not read, but they were Christians and had a lot of faith.
Santa Rita de Cássia felt her vocation and always wanted to live in a convent, partly because of all the stories of saints that her parents told her, however, as was customary in those times, her parents chose her a husband.
It turns out that her husband, Paolo, was unfaithful and used to drink a lot and she suffered a lot during the 18 years of marriage. The happy side of this part of Santa's life is that she was blessed with two children.
After a lot of patience, resignation and many prayers, she managed to convert her husband, which caused many women in that region to go to her house to ask for advice.
But her husband's past problems recurred, until one afternoon he left for work and never came back. He was found a day later, murdered.
Her children swore revenge and Santa Rita de Cássia asked God to intercede so that they would not commit this sin. His two sons fell incurably ill, but before they died they were able to forgive their father's murderer.
Despite the death of the entire family, Santa Rita felt that she had peace in her life, as there was no longer any hatred in her home. Since she was alone, she tried to enter an Augustinian convent, being denied, as she had already been married and had children.
It turns out that all that changed when, one night, Santa Rita was woken up by some voices calling her name at the door of her house. There were three saints who asked to be followed through the streets of Cassia.
Santa Rita de Cássia walked a lot around the city and continued even when she was already very tired. She fainted and was miraculously found inside the convent, which by this time had its doors locked.
She was then admitted to the convent, but she was constantly scourged, lived on bread and water and worked more than the other novices.
She was forced to water a dry branch of wood to prove her vocation. And amazingly after a few months the branch turned into a vine with big bunches of grapes.
Santa Rita de Cássia also received the suffering of Christ in her body, as it was one of her constant requests during the prayers that she made with great faith.
One of the thorns of the crown of Christ was received on her forehead, a wound that never healed, which made her live a recluse, as she was humiliated by the other nuns because of the stench of the wound on her forehead.
Near her death, a relative visited Santa Rita and asked her to give him some roses to put on her bed. Since she was very weak from an illness that left her bedridden in the final years of her life, and because it was winter, everyone thought she was delirious, but her relative, when she left the convent, passed in front of the garden and saw four roses. very red, and took those roses very quickly to the convent.
On the day of Santa Rita de Cássia's death, May 22, 1457, the great bell of the convent began to ring alone, the wound she had on her forehead miraculously healed and her body began to exude a perfume of fresh roses.
Her body remains intact in a glass case in the church of Cassia's convent, and it still smells like roses today.
Her death day is when we celebrate the day of Santa Rita de Cássia, the saint of impossible causes. For the saint, nothing was considered impossible, as she went through so many difficulties in life and managed to overcome them all.
Prayer of Santa Rita de Cassia
O mighty and glorious Santa Rita de Cássia, called Saint of impossible causes, lawyer of desperate cases, helper at the last minute, refuge and shelter from the pain that drags you to the abyss of sin and hopelessness, with all confidence in your power next to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I turn to you in the difficult and unforeseen case, which painfully oppresses my heart.
(Make your wish)
Achieve the grace I desire, for being necessary to me, I want it.
My prayer, my request, presented by you, for you who are so loved by God, I will certainly be answered.
Tell Our Lord that I will make use of grace to improve my life and my customs and to sing Divine Mercy on Earth and in Heaven.
Saint Rita of impossible causes, intercede for us!
Amen.
