On my 580 I tried to get the break housings off, but it seemed impossible with how the one bolt on the battery box side seemed to hit the frame not giving any clearance to take off the housing, but now I know it's possible. I had the same problem where that one bolt holding the housing on bottomed out. I don't know what that is about, but I think I will go with your method and use washers.
