CASE 580C, How NOT To Change The Hydraulic Filter, I Just Bought This 43 Year Old Loader

I bought this Case 580C loader for $1,000. I'm not a mechanic by trade just a guy that does not like spending money on things that I don't have to. My local CASE shop charges $120 an hour to work on anything. So that being out of the question I try to "Do It Myself". This video is how not to do it. I had a light on the dashboard on that read "Hyd Filter". I had looked the meaning of the light up in the CASE service manual and it stated that the light may come on when the hydraulic fluid is cold or if the filter needs replacement. The previous owner had purchased the filter and just never put it on. I kind of think he too seen the light. So after getting the loader home I looked into changing that filter. What I mentioned here in the video about releasing the pressure on the hydraulic system was that I moved the bucket/lift control stick around to let the pressure off the system. What I did not know was that the CASE service manual actually states first to remove the filler nut. That releases ALL the pressure in the system. Live and learn as they say, and I'm still learning. It takes an Honest Man to post a video of doing something incorrectly - so that we don't follow in the same footsteps! Thank you for posting, Gerald! I will make sure to drain the hydraulic fluid from the reservoir first before I pull the filter.

@@GERALD_POST just went up on mountaintop property and was able to get our Case 580CK going today! I still need to get fluids and filters changed out but I had the heart attack Feb '23 and hadn't started it in a year and a half... I was relieved and overjoyed!

IMG😳 I needed that laughter, I’ve done that and been in that situation so many times. You handled it so well, you get a gold star ⭐️ for that episode. Take the lid off the hydraulic tank to relieve the pressure. I put a 90° street elbow in where the hydraulic sight level glass is located on the side of my tank with a breather to prevent pressure from building up in the hydraulic tank system. FYI, might want to drain all the hydraulic fluid out through main drain at the bottom of the frame underneath the tower. I did using 5 gal. Plastic oil buckets 🪣 3 or 4? Can’t remember, water was mixed with my hydro-fluid looks cloudy. Cover all your oil containers always!! Summer or winter no matter what!

Thanks for the vid....what are you saving the o-ring for? Collection basket at church? HA! you remind me of doing , that is: having the thoughts of somehow being frugal! HA! There is a difference between frugal and simply being wrong!

Man, getting the housing off my 580C took a large pipe wrench, a lot of heat and a ridiculous amount of time. Whoever had previously changed the filter had tightened it up beyond anything sensible.
