We recently had triathlete Stephen Jackson on the podcast to share how he was able improve by almost 40 seconds per 100m in 2 years.
In this video I'll show you the changes he was able to make and HOW he made them in that time. You can listen to the podcast on our website here:

3months ago i swam 100meter in 2min10seconds. gassed out. Watched your videos. trained 4x a week and worked hard on technique. Now swimming 1000m at 1min40 pace 🤣. after another year hopefully much more time to come off still.

It’s so good to see this kind of progress - as a late starter in terms of swimming it’s really motivating to see improvement possibilities. I can’t get to one of your training camps (it’s right up there on my bucket list!) and I don’t swim in a pool that allows filming so the next best thing is your virtual membership and these inspirational videos 👍

This is so inspiring, I only learned to swim about a decade ago at tender age of 29. Before that I had a fear of water. I got mysekf to a decent level in the first couple years but plateaued for the next 5 years due to serious longterm injury. Only started recovering from injury in 2018 and then slowly built up my swimming progress. Since lock down my technique has improved immensely and I have a CSS pace of 2.10 but recently averaged 2.05 over a threshold session. This gives me hope that I can go sub 2mins with lots of dedication and hit that sweet 1.40 spot.

Thank you for putting this video together, these are exactly my issues, swimmingat 220, so it feels like you are coaching me throughout the video. The improvement is very inspiring, so thank you to the Stephen as well

The slow with the catch is such an interesting thing to aim for as it requires full arm extensions and pull. It really helps me.

as a newby to swim , i am really confused as to what a "catch" is. Mind to explain ?
@thibod07
@thibod07 4 года назад
Ask the coach for more details Lakshmi but to me the catch is the phase of your arm stroke that allows you to gather as much water as you can before pulling it back.

do you think it would be a good idea to, on the entry, have him spear the hand to a lower front gliding position (around 50cm from the surface)?

Brenton did he take 2 yrs to get to improved stroke ? cause if so that’s very encouraging to me , this has helped thank you

Hi, always informative posts. How much did his cadence increase by over the 2 years.? .Per 25m for example. Thanks.
@action156
@action156 4 года назад
Marginal increase. I started at about 60-65, and now it is between 60-70.

Very important for understanding,: do the speed mentioned, is an average speed for 4km or for 100m?

I’m curious about the kick comments. Are you saying that the propulsion comes more from the upward kick?
@EffortlessSwimming
@EffortlessSwimming 4 года назад
an effective upkick helps provide propulsion on the downkick

Certainly a progress. To improve even more I guess the leading hand should lead much longer before the catch, nearly to the moment of entry of the other hand. in order to achieve that the rotation (body roll) should originate from the core, not at the level of shoulders as it seems in the video. anyway, there is always room for improvement in swimming...
@action156
@action156 4 года назад
I agree, lots of improvement to come! On the reach, if I wait until the other hand almost enters I will loose too much momentum.

you need to focus on technique its not about how many days or kms you do.

😱😱😱 2 years??? That is too much time for a small progress (2:20/100m is when it is your first time in a pool) 🤦🏻‍♂️
@action156
@action156 4 года назад
Small progression? In running terms, that is the equivalent of going from 5 min per km to 3:36 per km. 25min 5k to 18min for 5k. Personally, I am stoked!... but more to go.
@trucha1130
@trucha1130 4 года назад
Stephen Jackson it may also be equivalent to running from 9:30min/km (normal walking) to 7:30min/km (walking a little faster). In that case it doesn’t seem so much progress.
