After years of admiring Casey Neistat's ability to produce entertaining videos, every day for many years, I thought I'd sign up for the 30 day Filmmaking and Storytelling course on Monthly.com.
This is my review and I try to work out if this course is aimed at the novice or those with more experience? What can we expect to learn? Is it worth it?
Here's the course on Monthly.com:

I just enrolled and appreciated your balanced review. As someone starting out, I think it's important to note, that whenever you start anything... one always imitiates before they develop their own style. You see this in painting, cooking, crafts, even white-collar professions too... I've noticed that a lot of the younger reviewers don't realise this, but all their reviews have emulated Casey's style when doing their review of his course. The goal is not to copy his style, but to learn from and take what resonates with Casey's style and incorporate that into your own style.

I couldn't agree more Dean... and I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Certainly made me reassess what's important when I shoot, which was really useful. (good editing tips too) 👍

Great video. My wife is absolutely brutal when it comes to critiquing my work. Nothing is ever good enough. She always says "ask yourself - Is this the VERY best I can do?" before you show it to me. So I always do that. And then she rips it to shreds and next time - It's always better. Just never up to her standards :)

Usually people who deeply care are the worst critics… we actually live in a world where people sugar coat things and live in a fantasy world of ‘everything is amazing’. The truth is.. the world is a hard place, and to put up something you aren’t happy with or proud of will only set yourself up for disappointment when the trolls hit you up! That said… the fine line between perfectionism and taking action also needs to be considered!

Hey Paul - you might stifling yourself with your bias. New York is overrated and it's exotic and interesting to you because you're not there. You see your area as boring and dull because you see it every day. Take Tom Scott for example - he makes videos about places everyone else just passes thru. And I was genuinely curious about why the roundabout is causing this much traffic. Yes the production quality is garbage but you are telling a story you care about and that is a key to good storytelling. You do you but just don't underestimate yourself. 💛
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
Don't get me started on that roundabout !!! 😂. To be fair, it's not that I find my area boring (actually I'm very lucky where I am)... it's more a case of how the people in NYC react to Casey. Because of who he now is... they approach him, react with him and really help give him great stories. That's possible for anyone in any area to achieve... but it's not easy, and I think Casey underplays the relevance.

That's a thoughtful review, you've gained a subscriber with similar interests. I loved your remark about taking what you learn and putting your own thumbprint on it. Who do you actually want as viewers? Those looking for constant entertainment, with little educational value, aren't worth having along for the ride on my bus. And those who don't have basic understanding will slow the class down so much that the more advanced students are looking away. Better to focus on one group and aspire to penetrate the topic better than any out there before!

Nicely summed up - did the course myself! I was travelling at the time, so I couldnt upload, engage and watch in the 30 days as im sure it was intended. A bit bummed out on that, but the good thing is we still have access after the 30 days, so taking it at your own pace has its benefits as long as you commit. What I think was really motivating as a beginner, was to see the same struggles Casey has with saying things wrong, doing the shots over and over again. And the tips on storytelling, but not to overthink. But youre right about NYC as a character in his vlogs. Endless possibilities, maybe also overwhelming in itself to start out in that environment? So if youre in a less hectic place, maybe that is a good start? Guess it boils down to if you want to get good at telling stories with a camera, you just have to start. Enjoy and trust the process :)
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
Good points Daniel,... sometimes you just have to shoot, shoot and shoot some more. The more you make the better you get. It's just difficult to remain motivated when the chores of ordinary life get in the way! The course definitely helped me and it's useful to go back after the 30 days when you need more motivation.

Nice one, as always. I watched a lot of Casey and also came to the conclusion that NYC was a huge part of the formula that made his work so engaging. I purchased an MZed subscription expressly to get Philip Bloom's two courses (I think you've met). They were great (unlike most most of what MZed has to offer) but the location played a huge role in his courses and, I think, in his work overall. Maybe that's the bigger lesson - what you shoot doesn't matter, where you shoot it does. I. hope you're well.
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
Hi Matt, You could argue that any location is a character in your film. Thing is, I think the issue with Casey is he's become such a popular character in NYC, that the stories almost find him! People will approach and want to be involved... they give him the stories. I'm not saying it's easy for him... he's worked very hard to get to this stage... I'm just comparing it to someone starting out in Warmington-On-Sea !!! 😂

How ironic, I live in New York City and yet I don’t see it as a playground. Personally, you really caught my attention and left me wondering why there are now so many cars on the rotunda. Maybe you underestimate the power of the salesman above the product itself. Casey could probably move to Montana and still get lots of views. Thanks for the upload!
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
You're right about views from any location... but have you noticed how little Casey posts from LA? I think NYC is Casey's playground... it's the way people on the street now react to him. They give him the great stories. I'm not saying he hasn't worked hard to get to that stage, just that people shouldn't underestimate what NYC now gives him. If you tried filming yourself, riding a Boosted board, around the streets of London, you'd be arrested or beaten up within minutes !!! (Having said that... he'd probably get away with it because of who is is) 😂

Nailed it, so many film MAKERS are more comfortable as shooter than mastering the other 90 percent of show BUSINESS. Even "finding your voice" is a major breakthrough to discovering and settling into our niche. Clearly you're comfortable (or comfortable enough) to realize the secret vlog-style shooting requires us to turn the camera around and have something not only worth saying, but revealing your inner-self, vulnerability, intimacy, authentic self. And we thought just mastering time-lapse/slow-motion/wide-cinematic/angle/linking/reveal/opposite/dolly/DOF would be compelling enough... no, sorry. Oh yeah, do you have a story, an IMPORTANT story worth telling and developing your characters with a clear SETUP, CONFLICT and RESOLUTION? Does it have genuine plot points, protagonists/antagonists, turns/irony, compelling narrative in three acts with engaging hook (including the thumbnail), to resolution that leaves the viewer satisfied. And you do have good... scratch that... GREAT acting skills, right? Which means you have to "sell" the shots and the story. By the way, hopefully you DO exude charisma, bursting with warmth (verbally and body language) and especially mastered competency and confidence (more body language here), full of energy, ear-to-ear smiles and laughter. Okay, but don't you dare think too much when in front of the camera - instead be spontaneous, entertaining and for God's sake, keep the action moving. Ditto being creative, having and always developing your networks, mastering the business side, loving your work, always 100% motivated and never giving up no matter how tired you are. But then why aren't we shooting, editing and producing right now... that's what I'd like to know!
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
Wow... when you put it all like that it all sounds so daunting. The danger is people thinking you have to master all these elements before you can make anything... there's a lifetime of experience in perfecting the skills you list. A problem with our industry, is your whole learning process is public for all to see !!! I worked a lot with a Director who became a good friend... his shorthand for preventing us over thinking a situation was the great direction... "just bl**dy shoot it" !!!

As a transplant New Yorker from San Francisco, you can't even compare what you can photograph on a daily basis. It's not even close. IMO, San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the world. But, it's more of a still object vs a moving one of New York City. And the incredibly rich and diverse neighborhoods in New York City. There is no other place in the world like New York City...

New York as a background is there for a reason. It is in fact more than a background because, as he said himself a few months ago "New York is what makes me me" He does not underestimate the huge part that New York plays in his videos - New York plays one of the biggest roles in his videos.

From my experience working on films. I say no, it's not worth it. Some of us consider Casey a RU-vidr/vlogger, not a filmmaker. He is creative with his style, he got into it when not many others were doing vlogging and was able to build a brand. There are many legit filmmakers on RU-vid sharing tips for free and in my opinion, more in-depth. I feel anyone can be a Casey if they can create something new. But, it is a challenge to do what he has done now. There is so much content to sift through. I feel it's partly why you see guys like Casey creating "classes" to bring new ways of income. Good on them. However, again, it's not worth it.
@extrashot
@extrashot 2 года назад
Ahh, defining the difference between a RU-vidr and a filmmaker is getting more difficult each year, after all, RU-vid is just another method of delivery! However, in many ways I agree with you when it comes to experienced filmmakers... they are less likely to get anything out of this course and probably have the knowledge to work out Casey's method just from watching his early videos. You can see the template develop... which is the only way you could possibly be that productive on a daily basis.

Are you a teacher? You are very good ay presenting a topic. I am from Mexico, and yes, $ 250 .00 is a week´s salary. About "be careful and do not "copy" what Casey does..." Well, we all learn by imitation. We do it for a while, until we find our voice-style-way-. Lisa Congdon "Find your artistic voice", Austin kleon "Steal like an artist", Elizabeth Gilbert "Big Magic" ...et.al, they all talk about this "stealing from your heroes ... then ... make your own stuff.... That´s the fun of it.... Best regrads...

Welcome dementecato... and thank you for the comment. Totally agree about finding your own voice, but it's that fine line between being "inspired" and "copying". Very difficult when you're starting out. Keep it fun! Regards, from Bournemouth ! 👍

I’m going to comment here, because I’m a Wayne too… and there’s only a few of us around….I learned after 2 years, you can make a story out of anything .. and there’s no need to apologize for it (leave that to us Canadians) just work with what you’ve got. As you move along, you will figure out what you need to make the story better… but IT IS PERFECT however you want to present it. I’m speaking from a vlogger perspective, not as a filmmaker, and definitely not very good at either. Good video. I look forward to coming back to watch some more. Thanks. Wayne

For someone owning💰16 million charging 💰250 from the audience that made him what he is today, shows the true character of Neistat.

Please please please do not adopt anything 'Casey Neistat', keep your channel exactly how it is. It's just fine and has a charm that keeps us coming back. Never in a million years did I expect to hear you (YOU of all people) singing the praises of Casey Neistat (I almost feel let down). Even saying his name leaves me with a cold shiver. Casey Neistat and all that he is is truly dreadful. He is the sticky discharge from the 'mediocre is best' 'new-media' generation. I reckon if you looked-up 'Mediocre' in the dictionary Casey Neistat would be the top definition. It's like "The Emperor's New Clothes' - I seem to be the only one who can clearly see how bad Casey Neistat. He's popular with the braindead (present company excepted) 3-second-attention-span generation. His videos have absolutely no substance, no merit. They come and go and are instantly forgotten, sometimes during viewing them. Anyone who 'needs' this course probably isn't cut out to make films but hey, lets fatten up his enormous bank balance anyway eh?! I mean, if the last 20-or-so years of 'reality' TV, BGT, X-Factor and mediocre RU-vid content have taught me anything it's that old rope is the very best seller! Disappointed but, I will be back!

Thanks for giving me lots to think about deaniweenie, but I have to disagree. After spending over 40 years making videos (it's all I've ever done since school) I think I'm pretty good at spotting when someone has developed a new style of shooting or a way of telling stories that I haven't seen before. It doesn't happen very often and is usually combined with the new opportunities that come with advances in tech or delivery... but I think we can all learn from it, even if we don't like it. It's true that Casey's video's don't look as unique today as they did when originally made many years ago, so it's harder to appreciate how different they were. I also know lots of video professionals who hate Casey Neistat videos... and that's okay... however, it's funny how they often take three times longer to shoot anything.... and can't work out why !!! 😂

@@extrashot Ah, a considered reply (rather that 'huge miss' or 'you're just jealous') - this is exactly why I watch your videos - you always fully consider what you say about everything. It makes us think differently (to what other creators are saying) about the product/technique you're telling us about. I don't say that in a creepy fanboy way, I say it because it's true. (Having been in the 'business' for 33 years myself) I agree that I am pretty good at spotting new techniques, new ways of doing things (I make a point of learning something new as often as I can) and I am constantly impressed (and yes, often jealous I didn't come up with it) how people creatively and intelligently approach filming projects. I've watched very young filmmakers come along and produce outstanding films with very little money and virtually no equipment. I've always supported and encouraged these young creatives whenever I could (even when I knew they would be taking work away from me). I've supported them because they deserve it (I was supported by experienced people when I started out and continue to get that support and learn from them to this very day) but also, I've supported them because I want to see what they'll go on to produce next - it excites me. Casey Neistat does not excite me. I saw him for what he is from the very beginning. He may well work fast - he may be as slick as the Torrey Canyon but that doesn't mean his content is any good - it's not - its awful and totally worthless except to the Millennial generation with their goldfish attention spans. I genuinely fear for the future of content if Casey Neistat is the teacher, the role model, the benchmark!
