They are useful but *are not* necessities. If you want, you can play them or skip them. They do give extra rewards which like most events in the game, add up but by bit.

Hey, you get them from events (in-game f2p events) Like dailies, I think Battlegrounds (not sure) and various game events. Also you can exchange for them by going to: Bag/inventory>exchange (at the right side of your screen... Then you can get them from spending events, though not really recommended. Final method is through CDKeys, I've quite a lot of video's sharing CDKeys on RU-vid and also shared some in the channels community section.
