And for Governments and banks to control access to money and ownership of assets

And the Chinese-style 'social credit system' which goes along with the digital ID which is needed for a cashless society will make totalitarianism inevitable! Digital currency is 'programmable' and therefore can be used to literally control what you may, or may NOT, purchase... AND if you get socially 'out of line' as per your 'social credit' score, you can easily be 'de-banked', which effectively makes you an 'un-person'. Like you, I too use cash as much as I possibly can, and those who are TRULY cash-savvy should know better than to want a totally digital currency! Are you listening, boys and girls? Say HELL NO!!! to a cashless society!

Many reasons to retain cash as backup. Natural disasters where infrastructure is damaged, having to shut down your accounts due to security breaches, physically losing your card or phone, large scale cyber attacks. And it’s helpful to practice budgeting with cash - you have to plan more and can’t just wave the plastic wand.

That is the target.Your account will be programmed. For example your qr code will work to a certain distance from your home. After that can be not available. Also you might be not allowed to build savings over certain amount.

A few questions with going fully cashless - network goes down (whether the telco or eftpos network), then how to pay for goods. - Card surcharges in play at many independent petroleum stations, fast food takeaway and some Franchised pharmacies. Some with no notice till you have tapped to pay. If fully cashless, will this just expediate and add an already extra burden to inflation and cost of living

Great insight but Australia should never going fully cashless. You can never let telecoms, banks & government to have absolute control over the way you transact. That's asking for trouble.

Yes that’s so very true - you lose complete control of your world if you do. Ask your Chinese friends; people. They will tell you stories of working around the clock to save money and the currency is changed - all savings went to zero - so they started again ….

I think considering that most of the students interviewed were from the one adelaide grammar school and therefore likely to be from higher income families, that you didn't quite get an accurate representation of the average student. The stats I found were more relatable than the interviewees.

Problem with cashless, the powers that be, can SPY ON YOU, and dictate what you can and cannot do with your OWN money. Current system is fine. If the Optus outage hasn't sent a reminder that the reliant of cash is crucial digital only future is NOT reliable, prone to hackers and power / service outages

I bought a few items at a garage sale for $50. I gave him a $50 note. The seller bought some new shoes with that $50 note. The shoe shop owner used the $50 note to buy some groceries. The grocer used the same note to buy a crate of watermelons from a local farmer. The farmer bought $50 worth of fuel for his tractor. The fuel seller bought his children some second-hand school uniforms with the $50. The mother who sold the second-hand uniforms put an extra $50 worth of food on the table for her children, using the $50 note. This continued for a multitude of transactions and every time the $50 was still worth the original $50. Now, using a card, the seller only received $49.90. The next seller only received $49.80. The next only received $49.70 ... this process continued until the whole $50 card payment was swallowed up in bank fees and resulted in $00.00, zero, zilch, nothing, nowt. No wonder banks want to remove cash from society.

Digital payments, when the system goes down, retailers and normal people go without. Business losses profit, customer are left in the lurch. Why, when business has two ways of payment for business, why would business get rid of one Avenue of profit? Two ways of profit,is better than one. Especially when the digital payment option is so ,so unreliable 🙏🙏

Maybe those kids asked should be told why we are using cash again. It's not because of conspiracy theories either. It's because we are worried without cash, the government could indeed control what we spend money on, where we go and how we do things and even how we think. The book '1984' a stern warning by Orwell who predicted all this shappening, way back in 1948. He only picked the title of the book before it sounded futuristic.

Misinformation or disinformation ! Cash is still legal tender in Australia and therefore Australia has not ditched cash. However some local retail banks have decided not to continue to provide Cash related services such as processing cash and cheques transactions including deposits and withdrawals. You are trying to create the impression that in Australia digital currency is readily accepted by the public which is not the truth.

Cash is more anonymous. Without cash, it's possible and inevitible individuals could be denyed goods and services due to authorities restricting what is allowed to be purchased. Political dissidents could be financially crippled at the press of a button. Health insurance companies could get information from financial records about who spends money on junk food. Goodbye more privacy and goodbye more freedom.

How about young people's numeracy issues? - God bless 'em. - They are Australia's future, however those of us who use cash, politely force them to learn how to count. Ever bought something for $10.20 and handed over $20.20, because you didn't have a ten dollar note, and wanted to help out? Remember the puzzled look you sometimes received? The young person then learns two things:- how to subtract, and that many customers want to help them by allowing them to simply locate a ten dollar note. - Good old fashioned courtesy and mateship.👍

Is it so hard to teach someone how to tap a plastic card? No cash means less muggings? All the people I know that are against cashless, talk about the government knowing what they are spending their money on. I am not doing anything wrong, so I prefer companies know what I am interested in, so I get targeted advertising for stuff that actually makes my life easier. I can't understand, why someone would take cash out, just to hand it back? I'm more about efficiency and cash definitely isn't. My local bakery has EFTPOS but has a $10 limit. Therefore I have to forego the meat pie, I would probably buy everytime I walk past.
