Been super obsessed with old casios lately 😱 watching my playing in this video made me realize how bad my hand positions are, I really need to work on that, hard to keep that pinky down, need more practice!

Casios unique cosmic phase distortion synths are quite unique. They can go from sounding like a double cheese sandwich to doing some extremely excellent impersonations of old analog gear. The small cz is one of the most amazing little surprises ever in the synth world

Cool thing that goes with these lovely CZs is the hardware patch library by Lestyn Lewis. It has thousands of patches from all the CZ models and an arp/ sequencer. I still have my CZ5000 with the hardware library.

I owned one in the 80s..such a beautiful underrated synth.. It was overshadowed by the DX7 as that was the new synth craze at the time.

I just managed to score one for $200, and I am beyond excited about it. Paired with my Wavestation EX I was lucky to get for a similar price, I'm gonna be having a lot of fun learning two unique synthesis styles soon. Thanks for the video, it helped me to decide that it would be a great addition to my setup, and a few friends'. I'm excited and proud to be a soon-to-be owner!

I used to have one of those. It was awesome at that time.... I didn't know anything about tweaking Knobs and Digging into the menu diving, I just chose the patches and I just jammed with my drum machine... Making music was fun. Now the horror of tweaking and Menu diving and 10 million synthesizers every year through NAMM OMG...LOL..... Thanks for this wonderful video... brings me back to the peaceful days of creating music

The CZ-1 was the best of the CZ line. 61 full sized keys,16 voice polyphonic and bi-timbral. Still have mine after all these years. The stock sounds do not do the engine justice. Fun. Thanks for the memories.

Pure love. I have the CZ-5000 myself and it has been with me since I was 11 (in 1991) and I still use it. The sounds you can make with these are pretty incredible, and the presets really don't show anywhere near the potential of what you can do with these. With that said I do love those charming presets all the same.

It sounds pretty cool! I love how the brassy presets sound so cool, but the more bell-like sorta presets sound quite relaxing! I think I have heard modern music made with some of these presets before, and just didn't know it.

I bought one of these when they came out- at Macy's, if you can believe that. It was my only credit card at the time, and I didn't have the $500 but wanted this badly. I really loved it. The problem I had was the power input had a very thin male pin in the inside of the unit which broke within the first year I had it. So I stuffed a bit of aluminum foil in the hole in the plug so it would make the connection from the power to the keyboard. I am sure I could've had it fixed, but I rarely had money for anything at that time of my life. Great little keyboard, and I was able to program a lot of sounds in it that mimicked larger/higher priced synthesizers.

Thirty years on and the 101 still holds up. This one looks like it's in really nice condition. The assortment of sounds you used was a good snapshot of the variety of timbres the CZ series could create. Thanks for the trip back in time. Good to see some of the old digital tech getting love.

DetroitMicroSound I actually prefer how my Reface uses internal AA rechargeable batteries to needing a USB power dongle I wish the Digitone used its own batteries. That’s one of main things making me hesitate getting one. As a hobbyist whose only gig is doing a 10 minute open mic session once or twice a month, I appreciate anything that reduces my setup effort and time.

The CZ1000 was my first synth back in '86. Comparing it with modern synths is a bit unfair because it never shipped with FX built in. Put the 101 thru FX and it sounds significantly better. Back in the day I'd use a Boss RRV-10 reverb, which was only 12 bit so it added some grit. It was the 80s most everything was drenched in reverb. Nice as always JAde Wii.

My first synth was also a CZ1000. I later upgraded to the CZ3000. A few years later I got a Jupiter 4, and that was something else though!

Sounds like the setup I had back in 88: DX100 + Alesis Microverb. Adding outboard effect made those cheap old synths usable.

Thanks for this video. I love the CZ series. My last 101 was destroyed by someone spilling a Pepsi into it. It actually still worked, but cleaning it out was impossible and I sadly gave it away to someone who thought they could pull it off. They couldn't fix it up either. Soda isn't good for synthesizers. Aside from the Virtual CZ plugin, the only other thing I have that comes close is the Telharmonic module by Make Noise. One of the algorithms is phase distortion. you can get some of the sounds, but only monophonic. I enjoyed your playing in this video. Reminded me of video games from my youth. You are a very musical person. It's always nice to see a musician making electronic music. So many people who make it are more like sculptors of sound, which is cool, but sometimes lacks musicality. you have a nice balance of both.

@@apislapis I would be more than happy with that. I applaud Uli. I think he's doing good work. Making rare, expensive and often unreliable vintage instruments available to us proles, all in. working order, with modern updates. I say bring it on! I'll buy two BZ-101s :)

There is no reason for them to re-release the CZ. Casio would probably lose money on it. There are tons lying around. You can easily get one for $300 or less.

In particular, allow realtime adjustment of parameters rather than just patch changes, particularly of the DCWs, to allow the equivalent of filter modulation. There were a lot of directions they could have taken the PD source in and could easily do now with modern technology.

I would love to own a Casio CZ synth and I might get one at some point in the not too distant future as they are fairly reasonably priced at least compred to what it would have cost brand new. It sounds perfect paired up with a Roland TR-707 drum machine although sadly many people ask far too much for TR-707's. But the next best thing is pairing this up with either a Casio MT-500 or an MT-520/CT-510. Some of it's instrument presets sound very realistic especially for an 80s Casio keyboard like the trumpet, violin, flute and accordion plus it also has really nice percussion sounds such as vibraphone and crispy xylophone and the synth brass and synth bass sound like an analog synthesizer even though this is in fact a digital synthesizer that uses Phase Distortion which is similar to FM synthesis.

My first CZ was the 230S as they held their value stubbornly. I love the suggestion of a Behringer or Casio re-release now that Jade wii has ruined the second hand market for everyone else lol 😂 The 230S is the dark horse - a ‘toy’ with a speaker and not editable, but you can edit it over midi and it’d basically a 101. I used to go to a music shop during lunch when I was at collage and play one of these 💓 - had a cz1 eventually - never sure why I didn’t keep at least 1 CZ smh 🤦‍♂️

Love my CZ-101 but it won’t retain user patches when turned off unless it’s full of working D batteries. There is rad iOS software that will let you edit and store patches, but always having to connect it to a device makes me feel like I’m just playing a soft synth using a Casio midi controller.

I often read reactions that Casio's PD synthesis would be a variation on Yamaha's FM. But the CZ's sound totally different. I had a Casio CZ-3000 and a Yamaha DSR-2000 FM keyboard. I used the DSR-2000 mainly for the sharp digital sounds and the CZ-3000 mainly for the analog-type sounds. A CZ can't do FM and an FM synth can't do CZ-sounds.

@Zero Cool on the alesis?? Naw just get one, it's 2 channel Mono(individually), or it can be switched to stereo (simultaneously) Plus if you have a mixer with send/aux return you can just run it like that and apply the compressor to all channels and just adjust the fx amount .

Geez. Those Alesis compressors are horrible. I finally got rid of it after buying a Boss CL-50 -- it was then when I realized what a GOOD compressor is supposed to sound like. Now I use a Dbx 160A. ❤

It has definitely flimsy hardware and shitty cheap keyboard action, excuse my French. But I close my eyes and imagine it being played from a high quality keyboard controller, and the sound could be coming from a way bigger more expensive keyboard easily! those brasses are gold :)

I had an CZ101 in the eighties and really liked it for its Sounds and Handling , don't liked the Keys,they we're a little stiff and noisey. Made several recordings and jams with it, it was my only synth i had , check out my channel for examples. Thanks for your Video, it brought back some memories :)

back for my usual "stuipid me got this for like $180 and then eventually sold it because it didnt have subtractive synthesis controls so i didnt get it" regret watching. for real, id get some ok sounds out of presets and stuff and id do like nothing interesting with it and i couldnt it figure out. mind you this was like 3-4 years ago. google is a thing. why was i like this -__-

The Casio CZ-101 doesn't have internal drums so it needs to be used with an external drum machine.

I can't stand most patches from these. Sure, 1 or 2 are ok, but they sound cheap and not credible. It's my only synth that's in the attic. Brass sounds dreadful. Nice simple whistle and organ tones though.
