Cass Scenic Railroad: A Geared Steam Extravaganza (Parade of Steam 2022)

On Saturday June 18th 2022, the Cass Scenic Railroad hosted their annual Parade of Steam event. This year included solo race runbys with the 5 engines, doubleheader and tripleheader runbys, and of course the legendary quintumpleheader runbys with all 5 engines hooked together. The star of the parade this time was Shay No. 4, which turned 100 years old in 2022. I was present at the event all day and had a wonderful time. Enjoy classic geared steam in the mountains of West Vriginia!
Whistles:
Shay No. 2 - MD Whistles Reading 6 chime
Shay No. 4 - Lunkenheimer 3 chime
Shay No. 5 - Homemade 3 chime
Shay No. 11 - Mockingbird slide-valve hooter
Climax No. 9 - Manns Creek Crosby 3 chime
The last clip is of Climax Number 9 wearing a shop-built hooter the railroad was raffling off as part of the event.

That mockingbird hooter TOTALLY caught me off guard. I was like "WOAH! thats a heck of a squeak!" but then it went up like 3 octaves and I was like "HEY! OK I'm awake now!

Thanks! That is a lunkenheimer mockingbird slide-valve hooter, the fireman can adjust the tuning while it’s being blown by pulling a separate cord.

My uncle just moved there not too long ago, he’s only 10 minutes away from Cass. and every time I go we always go to cass, I get chills when the whistle echos.

I have ridden behind all but the Climax, and ridden in the cab of Shay #4 and Heisler #6. Brings back memories of my childhood in the 70's. ❤❤ Two questions: First, is that the Climax that burnt up when the old shop burned down? Second, Where is Western Maryland #6? My Dad helped move her to Cass from the Baltimore Railroad Museum, and she has a special place in my memories.

That’s awesome! I’m not sure if that is the climax that burned as I’m not too well versed in Cass’s history. WM 6 is about to come out of a rebuild in 2023. It’s been down since 2019. Reason it took so long is a lack of workers to work on it.

@@SteamZRailfan That is great to hear. I am going to get my family back up there this year, as a kind of memorial to my Dad, who past in 2021. It would not be the same without WM6 running.
