@@cellbuilder2they can pull I think four loaded cars up a 20% grade. Because somewhere on the lines there at cass it gets up to 20%, I may be mistaken though
What a fantastic railroad this is. Bet the views on it are to die for, the rolling stock is something special - a working three-truck Heisler! - and it brings money and tourists into the town. Awesome.
Heisler? Oh, so that's what the other odd locomotive in this video is called? I recognized the Shay locomotives, but that other one, with the cylinders mounted at angles on each side of the boiler, is new to me. I would seem to me that either a Shay or a Heisler locomotive could be made extremely versatile if it were given a transmission with multiple gears, like a motor-car. Of course, that's also something else to break down.
@@redstripecougar4186 Well, cars are designed to handle many different types of conditions and tasks. There's SOME specialization (like trucks vs. cars) but there isn't that much of a difference. The geared locos - Shay and Heisler/Climax locos - were specially designed for one purpose: Extremely high torque on narrow gauge lines. They were designed to haul HEAVY loads up very steep grades, often over temporary or rough track. Adding a transmission/gearbox wouldn't have added any flexibility to their function, but would have added a LOT more machinery to break down. And they already were maintenance nightmares! They remain what they always were - a way to haul really heavy shit up really steep slopes really s....l...o...w...l....y. But they sure make for an awesome show for a tourist railroad!
@@jongalt9038 Hi John thanks for the sub ! Mostly boats on my channel at present , I do plastic aircraft and tanks also . I have some HO/E narrow gauge railway stuff . We live in Pembrokeshire which is the south west tip which sticks out into the sea pointing at Ireland .
Please tell me how to reach for train journey in W Va...! I have a/THE AUTHENTIC Baldwin Builder's 1920 RR Builder's Plate for this TYPE STEAM ENGINE...I sooo ...wish this history to be preserved we are Railroad longtime FAMILY RETIREES...I will sacrifice some of the Value so to be enjoyed by those to value...Solid Brass /copper 1920...listed on Ebay... being watched will consider price...
I can't get over how the gearing works on those locos. It's mesmerising. Just watching a conventional Walschaerts Caprotti or Stephenson geared engine is good enough but these! Good video..
Thanks for the video! Besides the charm and the beautiful scenery, I've seen parts of the indicators and controls of these machines. There's very little in this modern age which could compare with the ingenuity. Understanding the working of these parts would be beyond the scope of today's students apart from mechanical engineers.
Actually, I think it is an actual N&W 3 chime. They have a rather unique appearance; the step topped bell, and the open mouth (like on a single note whistle) between the bell and bowl). Few other whistles look like that.

WONDERFULLY Shot, and Lovely Experience which is so dear to my heart, as my late father was in Indian Railways and steam engines inspired me become Mimicry Artist 🥰🥰🦚
Folks, this is an awesome "bucket list" trip for anyone. It does get rather cold and blustery on Bald Knob, or you can take the shorter trip to Whitaker and back down if that suits you better. You can even rent a local house from the original era of the mill town for a weekend for a group. As I said, it is a great unique vacation idea.
I've been there twice and loved the trip so much I was nearly driven to tear when I had to leave because everyone was so friendly I'm even friends with two of the workmen there
Short long would mean the train is approaching people or machinery near the track, this is usually followed by short pause repeating until the head end of the train clears the obstacle. I think the whistle call most people associate with trains is long long short long- grade crossing.
Being from the UK and of an age where I fondly remember steam I often wondered why US engines had bells fitted as well as those fantastic whistles, could someone explain where and when the bell was used. Thanks, great footage, I can even smell that unique smell of smoke, steam, oil and grease.
Don't know , but in cowboy films the bell always seemed to be working continuously ? mabee to warn wildlife without loosing a lot of steam from using the whistle ?? Wales UK land of narrow gauge
Dynamo Productions Last year I went to CASS Railroad for the new Railroading Boy Scout Merit Badge and I earned it because I loved it! Our only requirements were to watch the scenic view and ask questions about the trains. I loved it a lot..
