Cass Scenic Railroad - Summer Steam In The Alleghenies

On July 8th I headed up to the Cass Scenic Railroad to film the regular excursions as usual I had a great time and got to meet some friends again. Shay 2 operated the Whittaker trains while 4 was on the Greenbrier Express and 11 was on the Bald Knob excursion. For all the whistle buffs Shay 2 was wearing the Reading 6 Chime, Shay 4 was wearing a Lunkenheimer 3 Chime, and Shay 11 was wearing a little homemade steptop 3 chime that they used to run a long time ago. For this video I wanted to add a intro with music and some drone footage again and I'm really happy with how it turned out. Thanks to all the crews at Cass! As always thanks for watching!

Lucky for me, I got to see all the shays in action this summer at the Parade of Steam, and some bonus activity with Shay 2 and Shay 4 the next day. I’m happy there’s this footage that dang well captured the magic.

Spot on video!! Any chance the mill/foundry across the tracks from the water tower will someday be rebuilt??

Thanks! Unfortunately, no the mill is in far too dangerous condition, and It keeps getting worse and will eventually fall down completely.

Woah, is Shay 11 wearing Shay 5's old whistle from the 80s?! It sounds almost exactly like the one Artie Barkley put on her for a number of years. I also see they're running Shay 4 pretty regularly on the Greenbrier Express now, she's finally seeing more action again instead of just mostly sitting as a backup!

I believe you are correct. The engineer in 11 Noah is Arties grandson. Noah brings a lot of Arties whistles in and puts them on the 11. It's really nice to hear some of his whistles again. I'm also glad to see the 4 running she's one of my favorites there. Thanks for watching!

@@cassscenicproductions8888 That's amazing. He's also running an engine that his grandfather personally helped restore. There's a documentary on RU-vid made in the late 90s that briefly shows Artie leading a crew working on 11 soon after it was brought to Cass to be returned to operation (IIRC he quipped that she was bigger than most of the engines they were used to working on). Thanks for sharing!

No Place like Cass! Nice Video Man! 👍👍👍 I saw where Cass is having Climax 9 do a excursion this Labor day. It says the trip is from Cass to Pine Flats... Where's Pine Flats? 😅

Thanks! Pine Flats is right near Wallnes. Wallnes was the first runby location during Rail Heritage Weekend 2023 if that helps. I'll be there that day there running the climax and the day before that for the night photo shoot!
