Cassowaries are often referred to as “dinosaur birds”. In fact, these astonishing avians are descended from theropods, the only dinosaurs to survive extinction. Since then, they’ve swapped their ability to fly for running speeds of 50 km/h and some pretty vicious-looking claws… But is meeting a wild cassowary really like stepping into Jurassic Park? Producer Eva goes in search of the facts and learns some surprising details about these imposing birds, from their ancestry to unusual parenting style.

Beautiful Dino Bird. Wish The Giant Moa, The Great Auk, The Elephant Bird, The Dodo Bird and The Haast’s Eagle were still alive.

Indeed! 💫 That would be really cool! And hopefully the cassowary doesn't experience the same fate!

if the whole hoopla around de-extinction does pan out, i think these fairly recently extinct giant birds might get a shot. the issue remains the same tho... if we can't even keep cassowaries from going extinct, should we even bother trying to de-extinct other large birds that basically lost the battle of ecological niches to them in the first place? keeping wildlife preserves just to sustain those birds' ecological requirements would be expensive. but i digress. it's more important that we learn how to live with every species we can first. the aussies are doing a fantastic job, let's see whether we can all do what they do.

Moral of the story: Tiktokers are indirectly responsible for cassowary attacks, and 50% of all cassowary kills are due to dogs.

@@Theonlybuddy 1) Not your "buddy." 2) Their impact on the global environment via fecal pollution, injuring/killing other animals and humans, and habitat downgrading, the resources they consume as their populations expand, and the zoonoses dogs vector all classify them as an invasive species, ergo, an introduced _ecological pest._ People in the sciences agree on that, even if some are not willing to be as truthfully blunt. I am.

@@EyeSeeThruYou why get offended when I said buddy but dogs can actually help the environment by hunting invasive animals like rats and other invasive animals like birds and being guard animals

I find them fascinating. It really makes me wonder what it would have been like to see the gixnt moa birds of NZ or the elephant birds of Madagascar. Even the vast array of terror birds in prehistoric times.

These are awesome birds, I'd love to see one in person, in the wild so I can hand feed it. Just joking (about the feeding part anyway)

2:50 Sorry but that was a terrible comparison. There are way more dogs that these birds; The dogs live much closer to humans, and the birds are usually fenced in.
@EyeSeeThruYou

You seem to have missed the point. *Unleased,* improperly contained, and roaming at large dogs are a worldwide problem. Dogs are the #1 provocateur of *bear* attacks in the US, and in Gulf Coast states, dogs become alligator prey where they then wind up getting owners injured and killed as well. You have no clue as to how many problems cats and dogs are causing in ecosystems, do you? Your post certainly communicated that clearly.

Australians call them Cassowaries, not "dinosaur birds". Strewth mate, only a bloody drongo would call them that.

They didn't. An analogy was used to help general viewers understand the evolutionary history and biology of cassowary by making use of a popular sci-fi film as a teaching aid.

@retiredrecon Your subjectivity is the issue here, along with a lack of familiarity with avians.
