See how I finish my latest glass casting project, a new series of cast glass artworks called 'Indicators'. Born out of the need to be resourceful during the Covid 19 pandemic, I am casting a new small series of glass artworks using 'reclaimed' studio glass. Recycling the lead crystal off-cuts from gallery glass pieces will enable me to offer the 'Indicator' pieces direct from my studio and website www.ditocker.nz/
In this video I will show you divesting (removing) the plaster/silica molds from the glass. I will saw the glass sculptures with the diamond saw and grind the cast glass pieces using an water-fed angle grinder. Then finally I will polish the glass using a linisher / wet belt sander and cerium oxide
Check out my last 2 videos (part 1 and 2) where I discuss glass colour selection, my thought process behind designing a new series and share how I work with wax for the method of lost wax casting. Part 2 looks at making plaster / silica mold for the kiln, steaming out the modelling wax and loading the glass kiln.
I welcome your comments. If you like this video please share and more subscribe to my channel for more updates from my Cast Glass Studio in Cambridge, New Zealand.
I am taking expressions of interest for this small series as they will be limited to stocks of reclaimed lead crystal glass that I have on hand. To register your interest in purchasing an 'Indicator' please get in touch.

@@ditockerglass4790 .....Definitely going to enjoy the ride but going to look at Bullseye classes and if they have any in casting. I live in the S.F. Bay Area and pretty close to one of the main stores/studio. I watched many of your videos and quite impressed. I'm a Mechanical Design Engineer and love to work with my hands and of course glass. I'm going to retire soon and we plan to have a glass studio in our retirement home. I'm new to fusing BUT was accepted to an art gallery for my stained glass work. Some say I'm gifted...lol. But now I'm fusing and using a glass studio to fire my work and have sold some of my work. Now I stumbled onto you and you have my head spinning because your work is beautiful with outstanding craftmanship. I worked at a National Lab for the United States and we had the best craftsmanship in the field of engineering so I respect your work. I bought a kiln for the first time which is being wired this weekend so now I'll be taking a lot of notes as I start my journey into understanding firing schedules AND the different techniques of fusing. Right now I just tell the glass studio of what kind of result I want. So Di? I want to learn for you....lol. Anyways have a blessed day and hopefully when I get to casting I can ask you questions... 😉

Hi Di - That thick outer layer of plaster mix appeared to have some aggregate in it, when you were demolding, or were those bubbles in it? Beautiful work, and very good videos too. Thanks for taking the time to make them!

Hi Rick. I use grog in the outer layers of the mold to add strength and aid heat retention. Thanks for the question - and watching.

Beautiful works and you explained it very well. I am new to this subject, so I have a doubt, can we use normal glass ( broken window glass ) for casting in kiln..
@ditockerglass4790
@ditockerglass4790 4 года назад
Window glass is a very 'hard' glass and will not flow into moulds well. It is also very hard to polish. I am using lead crystal created for casting glass

Great videos! Very good information. Are you using a wallpaper steamer to steam out the wax? How long does it normally take? Thank you.
@ditockerglass4790
@ditockerglass4790 4 года назад
Hi Ginger. Yes I use a wallpaper steamer to steam out the wax. An average mould takes 30-40 mins but it does vary alot because of size and shape.

is it possible to re-use (powderize and re-hydrate) the plaster you use for making the moulds? casting plastic?
@nicolasrenold
@nicolasrenold 9 месяцев назад
When doing the diamond grinding and other finishing, do you take any special precautions due to the lead in the crystal? Do you have to capture the waste water? I've just bought a kiln to set up for glass and was looking to decide if it's ok to work with leaded crystal as I have kids and dogs around as well as my own health.

Very cool! Wish I had all that gear to make some creations. What kind of wax was used? Wh did you need a week for the glass to form?
@ditockerglass4790
@ditockerglass4790 3 года назад
The week is not about the glass forming - its for cooling slowly so the glass anneals correctly

Making of plaster moulds involves more than I could possibly explain in a few words sorry. There are books out there on glass casting, but the veey best learning opportunities will come from taking a casting course.

why an electric powered water fed angle grinder - air powered instead - water and air seems preferable to water and electricity?
@ditockerglass4790
@ditockerglass4790 3 месяца назад
Because an air powered grinder needs a high powered (and noisy) compresser. I am too close to my neighbours to use a noisy compressor for long periods.
@belmontbanks
@belmontbanks 3 месяца назад
@ditockerglass4790 hey, it really mayn't have been my place to say so. It's just I was startled and wondered. In case you're unaware, there are really quiet compressors available? I looked at your channel as I had been wondering about recycling household glass to cast a column for a bird table - something that squirrels can't climb to raid the feed put out for songbirds! Also, it seems that by fast cooling, I might produce glass that is 'toughened'. Your films are super helpful, and the polishing techniques you demonstrate produce just the finished surface I have in mind. And thank you.
