In my opinion, cast iron skillets are like cats. You can never have too many.

I have a vintage lodge skillet that I use everyday. The one thing that I don't like about it is the heat ring on the bottom. It gets gunky and built up quickly. I use dish soap on my skillet everyday. I don't think dish soap is a problem. I have found that problems occur by scrubbers that are rough. I just use the sponge on it, no scrubbier. Occasionally a brush. Great demo and YOU are a blessing.

Cast iron cookware I have never come across a pan so bad, that I had to use soap. Grandma always taught me, while the pan is hot, dump some salt in it, rub it around with a rag, rinse it out, put it back on the burner to dry out the water Perfect every time Now if you have a pan so bad, that the actual seasoning has slid down the pan over time and clumped into an area, you need to completely remove that and reseason the pan. P.s. I made that comment before I even watched the video. If you have clumpy areas where it looks gummy, that was an improperly seasoned pan, like you said, too much was used.

The beard is looking nice, if you hadn't lost all that weight you could moonlight as Santa by Christmas. I thought about you yesterday, I was at an estate sale in Bridgeport where I got a double gate mark #10 BSR. I didn't have one and this one is in excellent shape or it will be after electrolysis, no rust, cracks, or warpage. Its friend was a Wagner Sidney O #12. I didn't want it to feel slighted so I brought it home also.

My great grandma, and I am old, had a cast iron skillet that the outside was not smooth. I don't know if was casting or years of build up. It was all black, and the inside was super smooth and seasoned, we abused it as kids and it still was awesome with little to no maintenance. I remember hand washing it but never seasoning it.

Just came across your channel. I have two favorite pans that are 50 years old that have so much build up on outside. The insides and bottoms are smooth. What would would be the best method to remove this old crusty buildup?

I have always seasoned by placing our cast iron in the oven, after watching this video I am wondering if using the stovetop for an electric range is as good or better. I noticed that Easy Beezy has Beeswax is that just to keep the oil in a solid form in the tube? Any recommendations to minimize the sticking of eggs in cast iron. Thanks again for all of the videos you share - I am a subscriber!

Hi there. I got a Lodge Combo Cooker at an estate sale, and it's in pretty good condition. BUT the prior owner had oiled it and put it away in the box (for quite some time). The finish is somewhat tacky/sticky and smells a bit off. Should I just put it in the oven and bake it on, or wash it first and re-oil and (re-season) bake it? You are the first person I thought to ask about this issue. Any help is very appreciated.

I don't mind using soap on mine either. Just don't throw it in the dishwasher...

I just bought a beautiful #7 Griswold skillet at an antique shop and as I washed it, found it was coated (I think) with some blackening agent. It's still black, but even after I washed it several times, when I tried to apply shortening to season it, the paper toweling I used was covered with black! I'm still getting some black on the towels after doing it several times. The pan still looks good which makes me wonder why someone would put (maybe) stove black on it? It wasn't shiny, just looked like a nice pan. Is this a common practice?

What is the best cast iron skillet company? I do not own one, yet.

i think they all make great users, but there's a collectability factor that goes along with the big names. you can't go wrong picking up an inexpensive walmart pan if all you want is to cook in it. i have a load of wagners, bsr, griswold, but they just hang on the wall behind my woodstove. my cook ware is the asian stuff walmart sells. the top 3 users are a skillet, griddle, and dutch oven, then you have covered all the bases.

lye only coverts or changes the fat or oil into soap, chemical reaction. i always use some kind of soap (home made lye soap) or dish soap to clean my fry pans. after fish for dinner who wants breakfast eggs that are fishy.

i haven't gotten thick deposits in a long time because i rinse and scour after each use. but when i did, such as from deep fried chicken, i just heat water in it and they come right off.

I plan on using your steps to re-season because it looks gray and kind of unseasoned no rust that I can see but got to get that lid off first lol😂
