Casting A Brass Mask From A Cannon | Molten Metal Explosion !!

In this video i sand cast a brass mask using a brass cannon and some scrap brass.
Great fun apart from the bit where the molten metal exploded !!!
Molten metal does not make a good fashion accessory !
I'm using Petrobond sand in the mold for the casting and an existing wooden mask for the pattern. This project is for my own educational purposes so i might learn about sprue placement, channels, vents etc. This is also the ideal piece for me to teach myself how to polish properly. I would like to polish this to a mirror finish in the future.
Lots to learn (Obviously !), enjoying experimenting with new things.
Back to copper next week probably.
Thanks for watching and don't forget to leave a like and sub if you enjoyed it 👍
Cheers

You are one luckiest person,, I rewind the video to watch closely,, several drops of molten metal were in your clothes, was enough to send you to ER.. please make sure no kids are around when you work with your furnace or anything having such capacity that can injure any one for lifetime !!!

Thanks mate, the clothes I wear are lvl 3 splash proof for molten aluminium and molten metal. Just goes to show.... always preheat your metal and moulds !!! Cheers Andy 🍺🍺🍺

I was a little bit sad when you had to melt that brass cannon that looked pretty cool but what an absolutely awesome job my hats off to you matey apart from your molten shower that was great 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 . I was gonna try a mask at some point but I don’t think I have the skill level just yet🤔

Good luck with the brass melt Echo, watch the fumes once the temperature gets up. I'd suggest melting outside, masking up when you see the white smoke, especially when you stir it and don't forget to preheat the metal you add to the molten pool (unlike I did hehe) !!! Cheers... Andy 🍺🍺🍺

Haha yeah the cannon was alright.... but all that weapon stuff doesn't really float my boat... To me it was just a cheap source of brass. I still haven't got round to finishing it off and polishing it up yet... Maybe I should do that, it would look a lot better if I did !! Doing a big one today... hopefully it will turn out OK !! a soup can with the bottom cut out over the pour hole helps keep some head weight to push the metal in before it freezes and helps minimize shrinkage
@JulianMakes

fun video and very nice clean up too. God you were lucky with that explosion. I had exactly the same thing happen to me with bronze. From my explosion it wasnt the temperature of the metal, it was the big old air bubble i trapped in it as i put the thing in the bronze. It was an old big solid feeder with a large shrinkage hole in it - and very stupidly i put in in the molten metal, shrinkage hole first. As soon as that trapped air hit the bronze BOOM. I've just done some maths on it, and air expands by 4.6 times from 20C to 1000C i presume almost instantly. You and I were both very lucky! in fact i'm going to buy a face shield right now just for the pouring bit. cheers o/
@MeltandCast
@MeltandCast 5 лет назад
Yep, adding cold metal to molten metal with my hands was just plain stupid. I was very very lucky, the burns would have been horrendous. Thank god I was wearing gloves. The 'Safety Supply Company' has face shields at £10 - £15. Which is nothing really. I did buy a better mask with reinforced sides, but I couldn't fit a respirator underneath it. So I bought the cheaper one without the reinforcement so It was flexible enough to fit a mask as well. The safety supply company also sell the Microlin Cooper 800C gloves which are awesome. I just use the mask when I add metal, I'm fairly confident the pour is relatively safe so often I don't use a mask when pouring. I also try and get the metal small enough so I can feed it through the hole in the furnace rather than opening it up each time. At least I know if I do get a metal pop it will be contained in the furnace. Cheers Andy

The mask looks great, the detail is impressive, and you survived without injury so all good. What's the stuff you are spooning off the metal as it melts? I assume it's some sort of impurities/slag?

Haven’t had a metal explosion like that, thankfully , but i do have a crater in the concrete where i had my foundry sitting for one pour. Even though it sits on legs about 4” high, the concrete still got too hot and it sounded like a shotgun when it went off. No injuries, only soiled pants....
@MeltandCast
@MeltandCast 4 года назад
I've not had any major spillages on concrete yet... And yeah when the metal pops it's pretty frightening !! Full trousers moments definitely !!! Haha. Cheers Andy 👍😎🍺

@PhotonChief 4 года назад
Wow! Sounds like you need a bit of better insulation in your furnace.
@jonlihou668
@jonlihou668 4 года назад
PhotonChief Its lined with 1/2” Kaowool and then 4” of refractory cement, but i have a 2” hole in the bottom in case of crucible breakage. This is covered with a plinth for the crucible, but obviously enough flame/ heat can get through to be a problem, so i have it over sand now. Probably worth noting that it was an exterior slab, so more moisture in it My point is don’t underestimate the danger, its not just spilled metal that’s a potential issue, but your input is welcomed, thanks

@@josephlarkin131 I know, luckily there was hardly any brass in the crucible at that stage - just enough to cover the bottom, if it had been full it would have been a lot worse. I'd hate to think what molten metal would do to flesh, especially as we are mostly made of water !! Luckily it was just a small pop, but it destroyed my glove and really scared the pants off me, lesson well and truly learnt !!! Haha

Cheers Doug... Good idea, just re-watched the video to see what you meant, you're right it would have looked good floating so to speak... To be honest though it was one of the first things I cast so I wasn't really thinking about how it might end up.... I was just pleased I actually managed to cast the thing... I still haven't finished it yet, I need to polish it up and re cut the eye holes. Thanks for your suggestion, I'll definitely think more about how things might be mounted in the future... I have a really cool mask to try in a couple of weeks, I'll try and keep the risers in the same place on that one and go for the floating look... All the best...
