Super cool ! Try using only pure soft lead. I pour my own lead fishing jigs in weights down to 1/80th ounce and soft lead does a MUCH better job of filling out the fine details of my molds. I am sure using pure soft lead will make the details pop on your coins too. To check if you have soft lead or not, just press your thumbnail into the chunk of lead. If it leads a mark in the lead then you have soft lead. If not, then it is hard lead. Also, you may want to consider fluxing your lead then skimming the dross ( crud ) that floats to the top. Removing impurities in your lead can help with any detail issues you may have. You can use a commercial flux or you can use a few little shavings of candle wax. Do it outside because it smokes to high heaven. LOL Of course this all depends on how carried away you want to get with your coin casting but the steps above are easy to do and I think will be worth the effort on your part. Best of luck !
@TheManWithTheHat
@TheManWithTheHat 7 лет назад
Thank you Bryan. Not sure what 'fluxing the lead' really is mate?
@bryantupper1459
@bryantupper1459 7 лет назад
Flux can do more than one thing when working with molten metals but one of it's jobs is to act as a sort of cleaning agent. With molten lead, flux draws impurities to the top where you skim them off. Any hardware store , plumbing or welding supply store/shop will have it.

I think it might look better if you have some kind of vacuum pressure on the mold while its curing, to pull the material closer around the coin? I have seen some videos where people are using shop vac's to create molds of items. Maybe running the suction for maybe 20 minutes or so before the liquid hardens completely?
@TheManWithTheHat
@TheManWithTheHat 7 лет назад
Th lead hardens in 3 seconds Tek matey
@cuddles6938
@cuddles6938 7 лет назад
I meant the rubber you use to make the mold first, it might help with vacuum pressure to get a better image on the rubber from the coins. Air bubbles might keep some of the impressions from being as pristine as you might like them.

A fun bit of creativity on your part Stephen. Really enjoyed the video ANDthe instructions. I strongly disagree with Paul Jones. Quite easy to tell the difference between a lead replica and a silver original. Certainly provides a way for those of us who have virtually no way of ever finding or seeing an original the opportunity to hold and see what the original was like. 👍👍

Good one, casting one was when mould was cold. Always better when mould warmed up. Have you thought of a little man in hat stamp to say made by you. Then you can't be done for copying coin

So a higher heat silicone with silver? What material could handle 1,763°F or 962° C? I don't see the resin name in the video description. I have heard of clay casting, but this seems simpler. Any ideas on a higher heat silicone? ( I'm Just looking at old coins as well) Cheers!

Great video, you wanna slip that mould back into the same size container it was in when you set it when your casting and when you have melted your lead, you must skim the oxide (and other crap) off of the top of it, happy casting Edit: have you tried casting with gallium? you don't want to hold it but at room temp it's solid, although... a particularly heavy heat wave might melt your collection, it's melting point is around 29°C, just a thought, I've done magic tricks with gallium and coin casting, always a gasp or horror to see "their" coin melt in my hands
