why were the venting tubes in the mold so large? genuinely curious if there was a reason in particular or not, most molding and casting I've seen done on youtube has been done with relatively small venting tubes, and I was wondering if there was something you were trying to avoid by making them very large
@Azothify
@Azothify 2 года назад
larger vent holes means better airflow and a higher chance for a solid pour as opposed to smaller ones that may get blocked off resulting in cavities or bubbles in the metal. Plus with it being brass, there's basically 100% reclaimation to the metal as you can just melt down the excess later for a new pour or just make an ingot.

@DaveTpletsch
@DaveTpletsch 3 года назад
Agreed. I was really hoping to see the process of making the sprue, and something to show how the oil reservoir would be molded to leave a clear void after the bronze pour. But unfortunately we got no such thing.
@FreeOfFantasy
@FreeOfFantasy 3 года назад
@@DaveTpletsch He molded the positive in wax, coated it in gypsum and melted out the wax. The hollow was just filled with gypsum before he poured. My guess is that he molded the bottom of the lamp and then attached a wax plate for the top.
@DaveTpletsch
@DaveTpletsch 3 года назад
@@FreeOfFantasy I assumed as much as well, I've done a couple of small bronze pours myself so I have passing familiarity with the process. But the making of the sprue tree and the wax positive are very rarely shown in bronze pour videos I've seen for some reason despite the fact that they're vitally important. I mostly just wanted to see the process represented in its entirety. It's a small nitpick at an otherwise excellent video.

Nice job! One comment - I really don't think that many heavy spruces was necessary and you just made extra work for yourself, especially when using vacuum casting or centrifugal casting, but even with gravity casting.

Two things: What was the thing the mold was sitting in? Some kind of heater or vacuum chamber? Secondly - why did the bottom need to be made separately? Wouldn't it cast just fine with the base on there, or would it make it too hard to clean out the casting medium?
@brocktechnology
@brocktechnology 3 года назад
The hole in the bottom is made by the core support and ya to clean it out as well. I think that was preheating the mold but not sure.
@smellsofbikes
@smellsofbikes 3 года назад
Yeah, the mold was in a perforated flask, sitting on a silicone gasket in a vacuum chamber. The perf pulls the air through. They have a rubber sock that goes over the perf flask to keep the investment from leaking out, then you pull it off when pouring. It's possible he thought the re-entrant angle would capture air bubbles during investment, so he did it in two pieces.
