Casting 'Golden' Oscar Award Trophy in Brass from Empty Bullet Shells

In this video i'm casting a brass Oscar award from empty bullet shells which i bought at the local shooting range in Antwerp.
The color of the brass is almost identical to gold so that is why i call it a 'golden' Oscar. If it would be real gold then it would cost a gazillion dollars :-D

It took me about 3 weeks before i had a succesfull cast and that is why it took so long before i uploaded a video :)
I also had to buy a new furnace which costed me about 3000 USD to make this work.
The furnace used roughly 150Kw of electricity in total for all 3 attempts, so i hope it was worth it :)

I melt heaps of brass on my channel but never used bulletshells as I’m in Australia and there hard to come by, brass is definitely my fav as like you said it’s like gold 😁. Awesome channel my friend 👏🏻😄😉👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

That's a really nice result. Maybe just one more tip: I would've left the plaster mold in the furnace at high temperature right until immediately before casting, so that you'd pour the molten brass right into the hot mold. The casting would've been even nicer that way (pretty much no bubbles/voids and the plaster wouldn't have cracked during casting either). Also, plaster has to be dried first, because after it sets, it's literally full of water. Only after most of the water has evaporated (by drying it in a conventional oven for example) can the temperature be raised to boiling points above that of water, otherwise the plaster will crack as spectacularly as it did for you.

Now that you’ve committed w/ the electric furnace, you should do a whole set of awards (Golden globe, Grammy, etc.) and you can have a set of awards in your home. Talk about conversation piece!

I really like the work you put into this to get it to work. Trial and error, but the result is absolutely great! Also love the different methods of casting you utilize. Often casting channels stick to one thing, but you don't. You went the extra mile, and again, that successful attempt looks very sharp, without any buffs or pouring "dents".

Oh man, this was awsome. I feel for you for the lost of two molds. Years ago i went into a porcelain factory, and the reason why you need so many hours in the oven is to dry out the water in the plaster or porcelain before you subject it to very high temperatures, otherwisrme the water would escape too rapidly, cracking the material. Anyway, amazing video

I actually prefer the failed attempt oscar sculpture better than the successful cast. Its so organic looking. I love it. I hope you kept it around and haven't recycled it. Would love to stand a chance to win it if you ever conduct a give away for failed pieces in the future. Loving your effort and work too. Hope there's more to come. :)
