In this video, we take old wheel weights and melt them into ingot for use in casting projectiles, art, and other lead projects. It's a great way to recycle old scrap into usable products.

The wheel weight that you were tap tap tapping on was iron/steel and can be identified in one of two ways. First if you look at where the clip on is welded that is a clear indication that it is a ferrous material. Secondly it should have the letters FE indicating ferrous metal. When you are looking at a zinc wheel weight you will notice that it is molded almost identically to lead wheel weights but has a ZN raised lettering on the body of the clip on weight. You can also use a magnet on the end of the weight to determine if it is a ferrous material or not. Steel weights will not affect the melt and can be removed with the clips. Zinc is the real killer and will melt at 786 degrees Fahrenheit. Just keep your melt at or under 700F and you’ll be ok.

My grandad used to take us around to gas stations, and ask if we could have the old weights they were discarding from tire changes. We would then take them back to his place, and cast them into jigs for fishing.

I melted them down with a load of bullets from a range to cast a lead slab that's 12" by 12" by 4". It is so handy in the workshop as a surface to punch gaskets on etc and as a handy heavy weight. Can hammer parts on it with much reduced chance of doing any damage to threads etc. Gets used so much I wonder how managed without it!

Alternative weights are made of steel or zinc or a zinc alloy called ZAMA, which combines zinc, aluminum and copper.

Next time use a little candle wax to flux the lead and you may get another good pound of lead. I cast for 308 win, 45 acp and 380 acp.
