Join me in West Palm Beach, Florida as I cast on for my first knitting project of the season! In this episode, I'll be refreshing my brain -- rusty after several months of not touching the knitting needles -- on how to knit, which cast on method to use, and other general reflections on knitting, and this pattern specifically!
THE PLAYLIST: • VLOGmas 2023 🎄🎪🧵
I don't have the energy to write a whole new description, so here's some of the text from the first episode!In this episode we'll find a suitable -and free- Christmas stocking pattern for some future Crazy Quilting!
I'll pack up our suitcase, but not before going through all the various crafts I'll be bringing with me on tour, including knitting, future knitting bags and notions, fabric for quilting, some chicken scratch apron supplies, AND of course the inevitable garland and twinkle lights to make each and every hotel on our whirlwind 6 week tour feel like home for the holidays!
Also included: some more sneak peaks of our touring Christmas Circus show (although more will come in future videos, don't worry), and a first look at my favorite vintage patterns!

I am so sorry you had the problem at the hotel. I would also report this incident to your company. Her behavior was inexcusable and they have a breakdown of communication in the hotel. Staff should have been made aware of your group. I’m sure that wedding parties, etc., take photos and film while staying there. I retired from the hotel industry and loved every minute of it, especially the groups and performers who stayed there.

This was my reaction as well; I didn’t notice the hand talking until people commented on it and then my reaction was “yeah, and? Lots of people (including me) do that all the time. Totally normal.” Also, you’re from Montreal; hand talking is so stereotypically Quebecois. But also, I literally laughed out loud at the mental image of being surrounded by people in straight jackets, to keep their hands down when talking. That what it would take to get me to stop talking with my hands!

While I can definitely appreciate wanting to just move on, I also have worked in the hospitality and customer service industries for decades and know that nothing will change if nothing is said and she has probably done this to many people, not just you. Hello, Shannon! I have some knitting experience by now, and have a couple of tips if you want them. Nepal is one of my favourite inexpensive yarns, and I've used it for loads of projects big and small! Definitely agree with seeing and touching yarns before buying as texture and colour can vary greatly (unless you've already seen what you want, of course), so glad your friend could help you out there! So, on to the tips! 1. Cast-on. For the bottom of a sweater there might not be a problem, but with cuffs and neck openings some might have a problem of too tight cast-on. Or in case of regular problem with tight cast-on. There's one technique called either Twisted German or Old Norwegian that's super stretchy and hold the shape very well. You can also find this in ribbed version, or combine regular and reversed for knit and purl. Roxanne Richardson is one of my favourites English speaking knitting teachers on here, so you might want to check out her channel. 2. Your row count shouldn't be a problem as you have fewer rows than the instructions. Had it been more rows you'd have problems with enough yarn. As it is, you might have yarn to spare at the end. One snag that might come up is if the instructions only use rows instead of length, then you might want to do the maths before hand and fill in the instructions. If it has both, it shouldn't be a problem. 3. If you have the amount of yarn that the instructions call for, it should be enough. If there's several sizes in the instructions, just check the next one up. If there's a change, it might be tight; but if it's the same amount you should be good. Hope this helps if you didn't know it already (and if you did, I hope it wasn't too much of a time waste for you to read 😜) Have a wonderful rest of your tour - and hopefully with better hotel management! 😂
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 7 месяцев назад
Thank you, I will definitely look up the other cast on options for the cuffs and neck, always good to have an arsenal of techniques! Regarding the row count and yarn amount, let's just say that this knit has, so far, been a wild ride (due entirely to mistakes on my part)... you'll see what I mean in the next couple installments. But I do love the Drops so far, and it's just a bummer that it's a bit tricky to get here in the US, especially with anything resembling reliable shipping times (moving hotels every day or two makes it REALLY hard to receive things by mail while on tour 😭). But you'll probably enjoy watching the story play out over the next few installments!
@shymaid5680
@shymaid5680 7 месяцев назад
@@ShannonMakes The German Twist is a long-tail variation, so you shouldn't have too many problems with it. As you say, always good to know more than one or two! Oh dear! Wild Ride Knits...! I have NEVER had any of those happen to me! Nevvah! 😉🤣I bet it can be difficult while travelling if it's not very available. A lot of yarn shops have stopped stocking Drops where I am, so it's been getting more difficult to get my hands on without turning to internet shopping. I will commiserate with you as this saga unfolds! Hope the end result will be good at least!

Loving the Vlog, Shannon, and the glimpse into 'circus life' ! Wow, that hotel manager must have flunked her customer service class in Hospitality lol ! As a long-time knitter, may I offer some good reasons to use circular needles to knit even flat pieces of garment...generally, most people knit much tighter on straight needles and that could be why your row gauge is off (besides it's difficult to measure rib gauge horizontally, not so much vertically). Try going up a needle size...also, knitting with straights can make your hands hurt, and because of the nature of your work, it seems important to protect the strength of your grip...and Yes, I'm a Grandma hehe...just trying to look out for your well-being :) I'm also Italian, so to me your hand gestures are just a joyful expression of your enthusiasm...Love ya ❣
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! I don't have circular needles at hand, having left them all at home, but I have knit on both circular and flats pretty interchangeably, and while the circulars are nicer for packing up into bags, the actual knitting doesn't alter too much for me. As for why the gauge is off.... well, let's just say you'll see why in a future installment (but don't worry, my swatch blocked out to be the correct-ish size... you'll see it all unfold in the future, I promise). Having many Italian friends, and an Italian roommate, I FULLY understand. It's literally a whole 'nother language! 🤌🤌

I am new to your channel and have recently in the last few days enjoyed exploring some of your videos from the oldest to the newest! To mix my metaphors, you are such a chameleon --you are a diamond with many facets. I was fascinated with your dumpster diving in Copenhagen, your many sewing projects, and your behind the scenes backstage of your circus act! If I were to try to describe you in a in a quick "elevator spiel," two or three adjectives would not be enough. Your hotel manager was probably totally confused because she could not "pigeonhole"you. You should pay her a little visit in your full diva makeup and explain to her, "No, I am not a homeless person, And my salary much exceeds yours!"

Two quick hints.... 1. Cast on with a needle one size larger so it doesn't get too tight. 2. Put the project on a circular needle. You can still knit back and forth, but it is easier than holding the heavy project on the single pointed needles. (Especially as it gets heavier as you go.) and 3. LOVE your HANDS!!!!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 7 месяцев назад
I left my circular needles at home, but I actually don't mind knitting on flats, it really doesn't bother me, even knitting entire vests. If I had the right sized circulars with me, I'd think of switching because they pack down easier, but since I don't, I'll happily continue with my flats! 🥰

You are knitting tighter than the pattern. Always check gauge!!! Needle size in the pattern is only a suggestion. It always depends on how the individual knitter knits. Get more yarn or start over with a larger size needle. LOVE your ENERGY!!!
@ShannonMakes
@ShannonMakes 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! I chose this pattern specifically because I didn't really need to check gauge - the pattern is so stretchy that the same size fits a bust 32" - 42", so it's really not a big deal if the gauge is off a little (and as you'll see, there is in fact another reason for the error... it will all be come clear in future episodes, it's a bit of a wild ride 🤣)

Long Tail Cast on Tip: - Wrap your yarn around your needle in a good divisable multipler for your stitch count for example 30 wraps for 300 total cast on stitches. - Make sure to know where you start and end (leaving a bit extra for the tail) and then unwrap it and then measure out however many of those you need to have enough for your total stitch length. So if you wrap 30 and need 300, then 10 lengths of wrapped yarn will be enough to get you there. - Your Gauge vs Pattern Gauge: Keep a diary of the yarns you love to work on with their corresponding needles and what your gauge comes naturally to you so that if you knit tighter/looser so you know if you need to adjust your purchase amount. I have some yarns that I cannot NOT knit super tight and get a proper fabric because the needle gauge up makes it wonky.
@ShannonMakes

So fun fact... I actually did that method (filmed it, but cut it out for the sake of time) and STILL wound up with way too much!?! I should have kept it on to sew up the sweater at the end, but as it is, I just saved it and spit spliced it on at the end of the skein, so it's not wasted at least!! Good idea about the yarn diary though (DROPS is really hard to get in the US and in Montreal, so I dunno that I'll use it again, but it never hurts)!!

I learned earlier this year that you can get a very good estimate by winding the yarn around your needle (or needles, if you cast on over both needles) as many times as you need to cast on stitches. Like you, my estimates have been off for about 30 years, but it hasn't happened since.

I'm really enjoying this series. Every time is something new, and I really enjoy the circus content. Sorry that employee treated you so weird. They told her to enforce the rules but didn't train her in proper communication with her clients. I'm with you, it's a hard and fast rule to never complain about the rules to the enforcers. I often ask if they know a way to communicate with upper management of a corporation to make a suggestion and I'm amazed at how few know how to do that. I will often whip out my phone and find out so they can do so in future. The goal is always to solve the long-term problem, not some little miff moment I'm having personally. Anyway, enjoy your new contract and break a leg. Or is that good to say to circus performers? LOL.

Totally agree with you about trying to contact the upper management as being more effective in the long run (and honestly, usually the enforcers are much more polite about enforcing the policies too, so that helps)!!

Oh shiit I live in WPB sorry your experience wasn't great. tbh the hotel manager probably thought you were a teenager. There's an arts high school next to Kravis and while I doubt any of the kids would hang out at that Marriott...especially alone, that's how the shops in Cityplace (The Square) treated me when I was a student/teenager. Plus there were a ton of city ordinances which prohibit minors from being without an adult. Which may be why she was just standing there to intimidate you rather than approach cause you weren't doing anything wrong, they just wanted to scare you. It's a shame I missed your show! That would've been super cool to see!

Congrats to picking up the knitting again! And definitely wouldn't recommend a vintage knit, as they tend to be even worse with sparse instructions, and assume even more knowledge on the part of the knitter, but this pattern is a modern one, taken from studying an original sweater, so the instructions are, for the most part, pretty clear! 🧶🎄♥️🎄🧶
